Readers critique The Post: Stop bear-baiting readers

Every week, The Post runs a collection of letters of readers' grievances — pointing out grammatical mistakes, missing coverage and inconsistencies. These letters tell us what we did wrong and, occasionally, offer praise. Here, we present this week's Free for All letters. I'm 13. The June 25 news article 'Bears escape enclosure and steal honey, then take a nap' was quite the story. The 'naughty' bears were definitely a good publicity tool for the Wildwood Devon conservation park in Britain, as unexpected as their little adventure was. The zoo should try to do an intentional version of what happened. For example, making a show of the handlers playing with the bears. Many articles should be like this, especially with so many depressing news stories. Ten out of ten for making my day a little brighter.

Pennsauken teen charged with firing gun multiple times near boardwalk in Wildwood, New Jersey

A 17-year-old boy was arrested after he allegedly fired several shots in Wildwood, New Jersey, and then fled on the boardwalk over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, police said Monday. The teen, who is from Pennsauken, Camden County, was charged with second-degree aggravated assault, second-degree possession of a weapon, and other offenses, police said. The incident happened around 1 a.m. Saturday in the area of Cedar and Atlantic avenues, according to police. Sixteen shell casings were found at the crime scene. Police said the 17-year-old allegedly fired multiple shots, then fled on the Wildwood Boardwalk and blended in with the crowd. Investigators cordoned off the boardwalk searching for the 17-year-old, but he was able to escape. Police said they located a 9mm Palmetto Dagger handgun during their search in the area of Cedar Avenue and the boardwalk with a 17-round magazine and one round in the chamber. Police said surveillance video helped them later arrest the suspect and several other people involved in the shooting incident on Saturday at around 5:30 p.m. They were taken into custody in the area of Spencer Avenue and the boardwalk. The 17-year-old charged was taken to the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center, according to police.

New Jersey's Wildwood Beach Patrol now outfitted with high-tech material offering sun protection New Jersey's Wildwood Beach Patrol now outfitted with high-tech material offering sun protection New Jersey's Wildwood Beach Patrol now outfitted with high-tech material offering sun protection The Wildwood Beach Patrol is ready for the Fourth of July weekend at the Jersey Shore, now outfitted with new sun safety information. The Wildwood Beach Patrol is getting sun safety tips from the RDK Melanoma Foundation. Sue Diverio from the foundation also emphasized the importance of applying broad-spectrum sunscreen thoroughly and often. "Save lives through knowledge and information about sun-smart practices and behaviors," she said. Part of that is issuing the lifeguards new tops made with a high-tech material. "The new uniforms are UPF 50," DeBario said. "So, they block 98% of the UV rays." CBS News Philadelphia The Wildwood Beach Patrol was named the first sun-safe beach by the foundation. "We have a lot in common. I used to be a lifeguard when I was a young boy," Phillies legend Mike Schmidt said. Schmidt, a spokesperson for the foundation, had a personal message for the Wildwood Beach Patrol. "My wish to you would be to be safe this summer and use as much sun protection as you can," Schmidt said. CBS News Philadelphia Sun exposure is the leading cause of skin cancer. Melanoma, the most deadly form, is increasing significantly. "We never really put such a focused effort on being skin-smart, sun-smart and protecting our lifeguards," Ed Schneider, captain of the Wildwood Beach Patrol, said. Schneider said there's now a new awareness. "Our goal is to keep our lifeguards, who are the first responders to water emergencies, safe," Schneider said. All about everyone enjoying summer fun while guarding against sun dangers.

Bears escape wildlife park enclosure and feast on week's worth of honey

In a scene that could have been from "Winnie the Pooh," two young bears who escaped from their enclosure at a zoo in England were eventually discovered in a food storage area chowing down on honey and other snacks. Mish and Lucy, two 5-year-old European brown bears, sneaked out of their enclosure at wildlife park Wildwood Devon in southwest England Monday afternoon and headed straight for a staff-only food storage area, according to Facebook posts from Wildwood Devon. There, the duo feasted on a "selection of snacks — including a week's worth of honey," as noted in one of the social media posts. The two bears were not a threat to the public during their escape, but all park visitors were moved into a secure building as a safety precaution. Mish and Lucy were then monitored through surveillance footage and on the ground until they made their way back to their enclosure, Wildwood Devon wrote. "Here's footage of Lucy caught red-handed, looking very pleased with herself after filling up in the food store, and both bears passed out afterward," the wildlife park said on Facebook. Wildwood Devon said the incident, which prompted a police response, was the result of an "operational error." The wildlife park is now conducting a full internal investigation to determine how the bears escaped to prevent a similar incident from happening again. "While the structural integrity of the bear enclosure remains uncompromised, we take any operational lapse extremely seriously," Wildwood Devon wrote. "We remain fully committed to the highest standards of animal care, visitor safety and transparency." Wildwood Devon, located on 40 acres of woodland and gardens in Devon, England, is home to a range of animals, including foxes, wolves, red squirrels and bears. In 2023, an Andean bear escaped from his enclosure at the St. Louis Zoo twice in one month. In one of his escapes, the bear managed to break out by tearing apart clips holding stainless steel mesh to the frame of the enclosure's door. Wildwood Devon and Devon and Cornwall Police did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
