Wilfried Zaha makes Everton transfer admission after failed £50m bid and club statement

Wilfried Zaha said he was open to joining Everton when the club moved for him back in 2019. Then at Crystal Palace, the winger was the subject of a disputed and protracted series of negotiations that saw the Blues publicly deny some of the reports surrounding their interest. Advertisement They did acknowledge a bid for the former Manchester United player - and he has now revealed the interest went both ways. Then 26, Zaha's future was up in the air six summers ago. Arsenal went into the close season favourites to sign the Ivory Coast international but ended up moving for Lille attacker Nicolas Pepe. Advertisement When reports then surfaced about a second bid of cash and players, the Blues went public to try and close them down, issuing a statement that said: "Everton Football Club categorically denies that a bid has been submitted to Crystal Palace for Wilfried Zaha that included an increased sum plus Cenk Tosun and James McCarthy. Everton and Crystal Palace have a very good relationship. "A bid was made over the weekend which was turned down. Both clubs agreed that was the end of the matter." Zaha, who is now 32 and playing in the US with Charlotte having been loaned there by Galatasaray, was asked about the saga while being interviewed on the Real Spill podcast, explaining he was interested in a move to join Marco Silva at Goodison Park. He said: 'They were in for me and I was open to it, I was open to the move but things didn't work out."

Charlotte soccer stars boast top jersey sales

Charlotte FC has had an up-and-down season so far on the field, but their popularity with fans is at an all-time high. New merchandise data from Major League Soccer shows that three of the club's players rank among the 25 best-selling jerseys in the 30-team league. The three players are Wilfried Zaha, who signed with Charlotte FC in January after establishing a loyal following as a top player in the Premier League earlier in his career; Patrick Agyemang, a 24-year-old rising star who also plays on the U.S. Men's National Team; and team captain Ashley Westwood. Zaha's jersey ranks seventh in sales; Agyemang's is ninth and Westwood's is 11th. Forgotten former Premier League star is outselling Marco Reus, Olivier Giroud AND Sergio Busquets for shirt sales after becoming a surprise hero in the US

Shirt sales for former European stars Olivier Giroud, Marco Reus and Sergio Basquets are being outstripped by a Premier League cult hero. The trio represent just a handful of the talents currently plying their trade in MLS, a league that has only grown in popularity since the arrival of Lionel Messi in 2023. It's little surprise that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and arguably the greatest player to play the sport, tops the list for shirts sales this year. He is closely followed by his Inter Miami team-mate Luis Suarez. But there's no place in the top-10 or even then top-15 for their former Barcelona colleague Busquets, who finds himself in 16th place. That sizeable gap allows the likes of ex-Newcastle winger Miguel Almiron, Hirving Lozano and former Crustal Palace star Wilfred Zaha to slot into the top-10. But the most remarkable name in the expanded list is former Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood - currently playing in Charlotte with Zaha under Dean Smith - who has the 11th most popular jersey in 2025. The 35-year-old become a fan favourite in his 18-months at the club following a free transfer from Burnley in 2023. In 93 appearances for Charlotte, Westwood has netted six times and has been ever present in the side since his arrival. Prior to moving Stateside, the midfielder spent six years at Turf Moor and was a crucial part of Sean Dyche's squad that avoided the drop for several years. Westwood also spent time with Aston Villa and was part of the squad that suffered relegation to the Championship in 2016.

Markus Anderson's first career goal lifts Union to 2-1 victory over Charlotte

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Markus Anderson came off the bench in the 57th minute and scored his first career goal eight minutes into stoppage time to rally the Philadelphia Union to a 2-1 victory over Charlotte FC on Saturday night. Anderson subbed in for Jesús Bueno and played 33 minutes in his first appearance of the season after playing 92 minutes in three appearances last season. Cavan Sullivan — a 15-year-old midfielder — collected his first assist in his seventh appearance over two seasons and 19-year-old midfielder Francis Westfield notched his fourth in his first season. Advertisement Neither team scored until Bueno found the net unassisted in the second minute of stoppage time to give the Union a halftime lead. It was Bueno's first goal this season after scoring the first three of his career last year. Wilfried Zaha used the second assists of the season from defender Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty and Liel Abada in the 78th minute to tie it 1-1 with his fourth goal in his first season in the league. Nineteen-year-old Andrew Rick finished with one save in his eighth start in goal this season for Philadelphia (11-3-4). David Bingham stopped seven shots in his second start for Charlotte (8-9-1). Advertisement Philadelphia began the day with a four-point lead in the Eastern Conference and now leads the Supporters' Shield race after the Columbus Crew beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1. Both clubs are idle until June 25 when the Union travel to play the Chicago Fire and Charlotte hits the road to play Sporting Kansas City. ___ AP soccer:
