Will Reeve on His ‘Superman' Cameo, Honoring His Late Dad Christopher and Why the Family Embraces Every New Man of Steel: ‘We're Rooting for Everybody to Succeed'
When Will Reeve was on his way from New York City to Cleveland to film his cameo in James Gunn's 'Superman,' he says his late father, the original big screen Man of Steel Christopher Reeve, may have sent him a sign from the heavens. 'I think my flight got a little delayed, so I don't know what that means,' Will Reeve cracked Monday on the red carpet at the movie's premiere at Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre. More from Variety How the 'Superman' Ending and Credits Scenes Liberate the DC Universe From Decades of Superhero Filmmaking David Corenswet Went Off Script and Yelled 'F-- You' During 'Superman' Filming When Rachel Brosnahan 'Caught Me Off Guard and Made Me Feel Hurt': 'It Was a Shock to Us All' White House Photoshops Trump Onto 'Superman' Poster, Touts the 'American Way' Amid MAGA Outrage Over James Gunn's 'Immigrant' Comment But then he added, 'I think I am very deliberate about living my own life, making my own decisions, knowing that if I make the right decision, it will honor my parents, and I think that it was the right decision to do this in a way, to honor my parents.' Reeve, an ABC News correspondent, makes a cameo in 'Superman' as a reporter. 'My family, they're like, 'That's super cool. I wish we could come,' but it was on a Wednesday,' Reeve recalled. 'They have jobs. They're like, 'We can't make it, but go do a great job.' Everyone's incredibly excited about it. We're not gatekeepers of Superman. Our dad played this role in an incredibly enduring and culturally meaningful way, and that has stuck with people to present day. But that doesn't mean he's the only person who can be Superman, right? We're rooting for everybody to succeed, to soar, if you will.' Has he been bitten by the acting bug? 'You'll see it, and you'll realize that I shouldn't have the acting bug,' Reeve said. 'Not only do I love what I do for ABC News, I find it to be incredibly important. Not to say that this is not important as well. It's just services something different. And what really stokes my passion is what I already currently do. That's not to say, if anyone wants some cameos, I am a member of SAG. You know, it's pretty easy to onboard me.' Read and watch more of my red carpet highlights from the Superman premiere below. Production designer Beth Mickle recalled seeing David Corenswet for the first time in the Fortress of Solitude. 'Nobody was in there…and I turned around and I saw David walking up the steps in his long red cape,' she said. 'He came right over. Was so gracious, complimented the set and then I got to give him a whole tour of it, just us. I gave Superman a tour of his fortress of solitude. It doesn't get bigger than that. I feel like I have to retire now.' She also showed Shaquille O'Neal around when he was on set to film an NBA promo with Corenswet and director-writer James Gunn: 'We promised him an 18-foot crystal that we haven't been able to release to him yet. So Shaquille, I owe you a giant 18-foot resin crystal. I will get it to you. I promise.' Sara Sampaio, the former Victoria's Secret model who plays Lex Luthor's (Nicholas Hoult) influencer-type girlfriend Eve Teschmacher, knew she had nailed at least one part of her audition. 'In my audition, James was like, 'We're asking everyone at the end to take a selfie,'' she said. 'I was like, 'I know how to do that!'' Sampaio also said she was in full support of Hoult recently going blonde. 'He looks amazing,' she said. 'Maybe Lex Luthor does a little hair transplant. That's actually the next one, 'Superman 2' goes to Turkey.' Transforming into Metamorpho took Anthony Carrigan more than five hours in to get into costume every day. 'It was a very much practical costume, but obviously to do some action sequences they gotta do some CGI.' Carrigan played coy when I asked if he snuck any photos to family and friends while still in production. 'Mom, just remember to lock your phone,' he quipped. One would think that after all these years in the business, Noah Wyle would have been to at least one big blowout premiere at the Chinese Theatre. Apparently not. 'I'd never been to one where they block off both sides of the street,' the 'Pitt' star told me. 'It's a Warner Bros. movie so I'm happy to support the company. I'm a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran so I can't wait to see what they did with it.' He added that Superman was 'everybody's first superhero. I grew up when those old George Reeves reruns were still playing on TV, and I grew up on the cartoons and the comic books.' But Wylie also revealed, 'I used to collect Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu comics like they were going out of style. He was my guy.' Pruitt Taylor Vince may play Clark Kent's adoptive father in the movie, but he had something to admit when I talked to him on the carpet. 'I got this message about this role in the movie and I said to my friends, my few dear loved ones, 'Who's James Gunn?'…They went, 'Where have you been?'' Vince said. 'I said, 'You know me I don't get out much.'' And then he added, 'No offense, James. Seriously, buddy, that's about me.' 'Superman' is in theaters now. Christopher Reeve's Son Will Explains How His 'Superman' Cameo Came to Be, and How It Mirrors His Own Life
The son of Christopher Reeve shared his experience filming a cameo in honor of his late father for the new Superman film 'And it was a nice homage, I think, to my dad, who for millions of people has been Superman for generations," Will Reeve told the New York Post Reeve recalled his cameo being leaked on the internet before leaving Cleveland, where he filmed his sceneWill Reeve is carrying on his father Christopher Reeve's legacy in the new Superman movie. The ABC News correspondent, 33, has a cameo in the DC Studios movie and recently explained how it came to be — and how quickly the news of it leaked. Will told the New York Post that he had not yet returned to New York from filming his cameo in Cleveland in July 2024 when he learned it had already leaked online. 'I went on set, I did my thing for a few minutes, and then got in the car to head back to the airport to go home,' Will said, laughing. 'And by the time I had gotten to the gate, it had leaked online that I had a cameo.' The opportunity to appear in even a small portion of the film isn't something Will takes lightly, calling it 'such a treat.' Especially since it is a way to honor the legacy of his late father, who played Superman in the 1978 film and its three sequels. 'I was honored to get the call from the wonderful filmmakers, and I jumped at the opportunity,' Will told the New York Post. 'And it was a nice homage, I think, to my dad, who for millions of people has been Superman for generations, and for the filmmakers of this new version of Superman,' he continued. 'To include me as a way to include him meant a lot.' As for the correspondent's character, it isn't too far off from Will's everyday life as a journalist, who makes regular appearances on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight. 'I will not tell you what my line was,' he said. 'But I can tell you that I was playing a close approximation of myself.' Will confirmed in a street interview with TMZ in July 2024, that he would be part of the 2025 Superman film directed by James Gunn. "I know the folks making the film, and they've been so kind to me and my family, and I had a free day so we made it [happen]," Will said. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Although Will makes regular live TV appearances, he said being on the set of Superman was still a nerve-wracking experience. "It was a really great experience; they were super friendly; it was quick, easy," he told TMZ last year. "I was actually more nervous doing that than I am whenever I'm on TV for my normal job cuz there was so many people around and I had to memorize one line, but still!" Will was involved in the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, which focused on Christopher's Hollywood success and the 1995 horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed. Christopher died in 2004 from cardiac arrest at 52. In 2023, Will spoke with PEOPLE about the close resemblance between him and his father, saying that he "always takes that as a compliment." "I think that I had two beautiful parents, inside and out, and if I bear any resemblance to them physically, or temperamentally, or in my values, then I take that as a compliment every day," Will continued. Superman is now in theaters. Read the original article on People

The silly, satisfying and sentimental cameos in ‘Superman'
'Superman' has finally soared into theaters, and with it comes a wealth of cameos and fun references to its DC Comics origin. It's what one would expect from director James Gunn, an avowed comic book uber-fan since the age of three. In addition to Easter egg references (look for a road sign leading to Gotham City, among others), the new film's surprise cameos range from ridiculous to tear-jerking. Many of these actors, it turns out, have appeared in several if not all of Gunn's previous films. Filling the substantial shoes of one Marlon Brando, Cooper appears at the very top of 'Superman' in the icy Fortress of Solitude, in a pre-recorded message as Supe's (David Corenswet) Kryptonian father. Brando famously played the same character in Richard Donner's 1978 'Superman' with Christopher Reeve, but he refused to appear in the role in the sequel two years later. Cooper might be more open to playing the role again – after all, he's one of Gunn's stable of actors, having voiced Rocket Raccoon in the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies. Portraying Jor-El's wife – and Superman's mother – Lara is the ethereal Angela Sarafyan, who previously shined as Clementine in TV's 'Westworld' series. It's a true full-circle moment to see Will Reeve – son to the aforementioned Christopher – in the new film. The younger Reeve was born after the four 'Superman' films in which his father appeared were completed. He was 12 years old when his father died. Now a correspondent for ABC News, it's only natural that Reeve portray an on-the-ground reporter in the new movie. It's also emotional and fitting to see Christopher Reeve's son – who, along with his siblings, has kept his legacy alive – appear in a Superman movie. Skewing on the sillier side, John Cena makes a surprise appearance during one of the film's more playful sequences (there are a bunch). As his morally questionable, supremely goofy DC character Peacemaker, Cena shows up as a talking head on a news show while Clark Kent and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) have a heart-to-heart, just as a wild inter-dimensional battle simultaneously plays out in the background (it'll make sense when you watch it). The 'Peacemaker' series featuring Cena was an early and unexpected hit for Gunn in his tenure with DC in 2022, with a second season set for next month. ('Peacemaker' is a production from HBO Max, which like CNN is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.) Gunn likes to keep his family close. The director famously puts his brother Sean in as many projects as he can – look no further than the 'Guardians' movies, in which Sean Gunn played Kraglin and also physically performed the role of Rocket on set before being dubbed over by Cooper. He also portrayed Weasel and Calendar Man in 2021's 'The Suicide Squad.' In 'Superman,' Sean Gunn briefly appears as Maxwell Lord, a threatening DC character who has been previously portrayed by Pedro Pascal (in 'Wonder Woman 1984') and Peter Facinelli (in TV's 'Supergirl'). Doing a deep-dive on the credited cast for 'Superman' turns up a few more of Gunn's galactic 'Guardians,' including Michael Rooker and Pom Klementieff as robots in the Fortress of Solitude. Klementieff brought zany humor as Mantis to both the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (starting with 2017's 'Vol. 2') and 'Avengers' franchises, while Rooker's collaborations with Gunn go back even further. In addition to playing Yondu in 'Guardians' volumes 1 through 3, the actor appeared in the director's gross-out horror opus 'Slither' from 2006, just like his 'Superman' costar Nathan Fillion. Other Gunn regulars appearing in 'Superman' include Mikaela Hoover and Stephen Blackehart. Toward the end of 'Superman,' the Man of Steel is visited upon by his Kryptonian cousin Kara, also known as Supergirl, dressed in the classic outfit that calls to mind Helen Slater in the 1984 film costarring Faye Dunaway. Now played by Milly Alcock, who more than stood out in this summer's Netflix series 'Sirens,' Supergirl shows her wild nature during her brief cameo, during which viewers also learn that she is the actual owner of Krypto the beloved if unruly Superdog. Alcock will be back in the role in next year's 'Supergirl' movie. CNN anchor Jake Tapper conspicuously appears in the background at one point as a news correspondent. He initially had some dialogue, but it turns out he ended up on the cutting room floor for time, according to Gunn. 'Superman' premieres in theaters on Friday. The film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which is owned by CNN's parent company.

Christopher Reeve's son Will: How 'Superman' cast honored late actor
The spirit of Superman lives on. Will Reeve, whose father Christopher Reeve provided one of the most iconic portrayals of the Man of Steel to grace the screen, has revealed how the cast of 'Superman' paid tribute to his late dad's legacy on the set of the new movie. The cast and crew came together to watch a documentary about his dad's life before filming the James Gunn-directed project, which is now in theaters. Warner Bros/Dc Comics/Kobal/Shutterstock 'I do have a secondhand story from the set of the new movie,' Will, 33, exclusively told the Post. 'It's actually quite meaningful to me to have learned.' Advertisement 'Right before this cast and crew of this new 'Superman' began principal photography, they gathered to watch 'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.' Some of the actors have told me that watching that helped them contextualize and better understand how much it meant to get this movie right,' he explained. 'And to do right by not only the fans who love this character and this franchise, but also loved my dad and knowing how much playing Superman meant to my dad as well.' 16 Peter Safran, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, David Corenswet and James Gunn attend a premiere for the film 'Superman' at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on July 7, 2025. The documentary focuses on the late star's rise to stardom upon being cast as Superman in the 1970s, and the shocking horse-riding accident that tragically left him paralyzed in May 1995. The doc also shines a light on how the actor established the Christopher Reeve Foundation (later renamed the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation) and spent the remainder of his life looking for a cure for spinal cord injuries. Will said that he and his two siblings 'really were touched' to learn that the 'Superman' cast watched the documentary before filming on the new movie. 16 Alexandra Reeve, Will Reeve and Matt Reeve during the premiere of 'Everyone's Hero' in New York City in 2006. 'It all coalesced into what I understand to be a great feeling of camaraderie and responsibility and passion and purpose, in which we really were touched to hear when we learned that they had all screened our documentary as a way to kick off their journey,' he said. After portraying the Man of Steel and his alter ego, Clark Kent, in 'Superman' in 1978, the actor returned to the role three more times for 'Superman II' (1980), 'Superman III' (1983) and 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' (1987). 16 Christopher Reeve as the Man of Tomorrow in 'Superman: The Movie' in 1978. It was much more grounded in our daily existence.' Advertisement Christopher died from heart failure in 2004 at the age of 52. 'He was focused much more on being a present and engaged father than he was in regaling me with tales of the old days.' Advertisement 'But he always remembered his time as Superman, and in making those movies fondly and with a sort of reverence, because he knew how important Superman the character is to so many people worldwide across generations,' Will added.
