Busch's leadoff homer, Ballesteros' 3-run double help Cubs beat Brewers 10-3 to avoid sweep

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Michael Busch homered on the game's first pitch, Moisés Ballesteros hit a bases-clearing double and the Chicago Cubs trounced the Milwaukee Brewers 10-3 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep. Milwaukee leads Chicago by one game in the NL Central. The teams meet once more this season, a five-game series at Chicago from Aug. 18-21. Ian Happ homered, Pete Crow-Armstrong went 3 for 4 with two doubles and Kyle Tucker was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cubs. Milwaukee's William Contreras had his fifth career two-homer game. The two-time All-Star had homered just once since May 23. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga (8-4) struck out eight, walked none and gave up three runs and five hits in five innings. Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta (12-5), who had won his last seven starts, allowed a season-high five runs in four innings. Busch opened the game with a 388-foot shot to right for his 21st homer. Contreras answered in the bottom half with his first homer since June 14. He led off the fourth with an opposite-field shot to right. The Cubs padded their lead with three runs in the sixth and two in the ninth. Key moment Crow-Armstrong hit a grounder that glanced off the glove of diving second baseman Brice Turang and into right field for a double that made it 2-1 in the third. Ballesteros hit his three-run double later in the inning. Key stat Peralta struck out three and has 1,083 for his career, passing Teddy Higuera (1,081) for third in franchise history. He trails Yovani Gallardo (1,226) and Ben Sheets (1,206). Up next Cade Horton (4-3, 3.67) pitches for the Cubs on Friday in the opener of a series against visiting Baltimore. José Quintana (7-4, 3.50) is the Brewers' scheduled starter for Friday as they welcome Washington and Mitchell Parker (7-10, 4.91). ___ AP MLB:

Brewers close to acquiring catcher Danny Jansen from Rays: Source

Locked in a tight race in the National League Central, the Milwaukee Brewers are making progress toward bolstering a former position of strength by acquiring Tampa Bay Rays catcher Danny Jansen, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. In return, the Rays will receive infielder Jadher Areinamo. Jansen will earn $8.5 million in 2025 with a $500,000 buyout of a $12 million mutual option for next season. To replace Jansen, the Rays are working on a trade for Marlins catcher Nick Fortes, who has three seasons of arbitration eligibility left. The Brewers could pair the 30-year-old Jansen with starting catcher William Contreras, a two-time All Star who has been less productive at the plate this season. Though Jansen is batting just .204, he has posted an .820 OPS against left-handed pitchers. Contreras has produced a .625 OPS since June 1. Advertisement The Rays are likely to remain active as Thursday's deadline approaches. The team has fallen out of contention in the American League East, and could move long-time lineup stalwarts like first baseman Yandy Diaz and second baseman Brandon Lowe. Areinamo, a 21-year-old who has played mostly second base and shortstop for Class-A Wisconsin this season, fits the Tampa Bay profile of prioritizing utility. He has hit 11 home runs with an .818 OPS in his second season at the level. (Top photo of Danny Jansen:)

(AP Photo/Aaron Gash) MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski bounced back after allowing a leadoff homer to Shohei Ohtani by striking out 12 in six innings as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 on Tuesday night. The NL West-leading Dodgers have lost five straight. Advertisement Ohtani opened the game by connecting on an 0-2 curveball from Misiorowski and delivering a 431-foot shot over the center-field wall. Misiorowski (4-1) responded by striking out Los Angeles' next five batters and ended up yielding only four hits and one walk to outduel three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. The 12 strikeouts represented a career high for the 6-foot-7 rookie right-hander, who was making his fifth start. The Brewers pulled ahead for good by scoring two runs off Kershaw in the fourth inning. Milwaukee added an insurance run when Sal Frelick homered off Kirby Yates in the eighth. Milwaukee's Jared Koenig, Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill didn't allow a baserunner over the last three innings. Megill worked the ninth for his 21st save in 24 opportunities. Advertisement Kershaw (4-1) worked six innings and allowed two runs and six hits while striking out three and walking one. Milwaukee tied the game when Andrew Vaughn's single to center scored William Contreras, who led off the fourth with an infield hit. Isaac Collins singled home Jackson Chourio with the go-ahead run. Key moment The Dodgers wasted a golden opportunity to tie the game or take the lead against Misiorowski in the sixth. Ohtani walked and Mookie Betts singled to start the sixth inning, and they advanced when Freddie Freeman grounded to first. Ohtani attempted to score on Andy Pages' grounder to the left side of the infield, but third baseman Andruw Monasterio threw him out at the plate. Michael Conforto then grounded to first to strand runners at the corners. Advertisement Key stat Ohtani's homer was his 31st of the season, the most by a Dodger before the All-Star break. Up next Right-hander Tyler Glasnow (1-0, 4.50 ERA) is expected to come off the injured list and pitch for the Dodgers for the first time since April 27 in Wednesday's series finale. Left-hander José Quintana (6-3, 3.44) starts for Milwaukee. ___ AP MLB:
