'This is our time': Palmer-Brown and Panathinaikos target Rangers comeback
Erik Palmer-Brown claimed Panathinaikos are 'really confident' they can overturn a 2-0 deficit at home to Rangers in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier in Athens on Wednesday. The Greeks went down 2-0 at Ibrox last Tuesday as Russell Martin's side seized the initiative in the battle to set up a third qualifying round clash with Viktoria Plzen or Servette. But American defender Palmer-Brown is adamant the Greeks are still firmly in the tie and can get the victory required to oust the William Hill Premiership side. 'I think we have to be ready, this is our time,' he said at his team's pre-match media briefing on Tuesday. 'I think over this last week we all have felt really confident and believe in ourselves to go out there and do what is needed. 'We're playing at our house in front of our fans and we know their expectations and what we expect of ourselves as well. We're going to go out there and give it our all. 'Of course, we know we have to score three goals as of now and we don't plan on giving any up. That's our goal as well, so we've got to go out there and perform at a really high level because we know they're coming to win as well. 'This is a good team and we know that we're going to have to go out there and do our best and give everything we have.' Panathinaikos spurned a series of chances at Ibrox and their cause was not helped by the fact they played the last half-hour with 10 men. 'I think we did a lot of things well but I don't think we finished off our chances that we created and ultimately that hurt us in the end of the game,' said Palmer-Brown. 'I think also on transition we can do better on stopping their two goals. If we put our chances away again that we had, maybe this doesn't happen. But this is football and sometimes it is cruel and you get unlucky sometimes. 'In this game, we need to take advantage of the chances we create, and we will do that.' Stuart Kettlewell keen to create regular flow of sellable talent at Kilmarnock
Stuart Kettlewell is intent on creating a regular flow of sellable talent at Kilmarnock as he revealed the club had landed a 'significant' transfer fee for Corrie Ndaba. The Irish defender sealed a move to Serie A side Lecce on Monday just a year after signing for Killie from Ipswich. Recently-appointed manager Kettlewell insisted he was comfortable with the sale of the defender and is keen to see the club develop more players they can move on at a profit. 'We are a selling club, there's no hiding from that,' he told Sky Sports. 'We always want to get best value for players but it's kind of been a huge part of my remit in my previous two clubs as a manager and it'll be a part of what we want to do here. 'We want to develop players, ideally our own, but in somebody like Corrie Ndaba, there's been a plan there that he comes here, he does well and the potential of that is selling. 'I think what people need to realise is that sale is significant. The number and the price towards the football club is significant. I've never been a doom-and-gloom guy with those types of scenarios. 'Of course, you want to work with the best players but we need to try and create that conveyor belt. If we lose players for significant value for the football club, then we have to ensure that we try and replace them and try and go through that process again and again and again.' Kettlewell, whose side kick off their William Hill Premiership campaign at home to Livingston on Saturday, is keen to bolster his squad. 'We definitely have to look to bring in another one or two just to gain that balance to our squad,' he said. Shin Yamada embracing his early days as a Celtic player
Shin Yamada is embracing his early days as a Celtic player as the Japan international gets used to life outside his comfort zone. The 25-year-old forward had spent his entire senior career with Kawasaki Frontale in his homeland prior to joining the Hoops on a four-year contract just over a week ago. Yamada has been in Italy with his new team-mates over the past week training and competing at the Como Cup. 'I'm glad to be a part of this Celtic team,' he said, speaking through a translator, in a club interview. 'This is the first time I have moved to a different club, so I am enjoying that. The quality of the team is very high, so I'm enjoying the football side of things. 'The first league game is coming soon, and we'll play in different competitions, so I would like to score a lot of goals and share good moments with the fans.' Yamada made an eye-catching first appearance for Celtic in Como on Saturday night and scored the winning penalty as his new side defeated Saudi Arabian team Al-Ahli in a shoot-out following a 1-1 draw. 'I'm happy to score the last goal to win the game,' he said. 'I wish I could have scored during the game, but in the end I contributed so it's good.' Celtic captain Callum McGregor believes his side are in good fettle as they prepare to kick off their William Hill Premiership title defence at home to St Mirren next Sunday. 'Pre-season has been good,' the midfielder said before the Hoops flew from Italy back to Scotland on Sunday. 'Every season throws up different challenges of trying to get up to speed, trying to integrate new players and find the rhythm of the team. 'At times it's looked really good and there are always bits we can brush up on. 'It's been a good five or six-week block. The boys have worked really hard. Everyone knows the objectives and we're ready to go. The big test for us will be next week. 'We'll be ready for St Mirren. We know that they always give you a tough game. The start of the week will be nice and chilled, and then we'll ramp it up as we go. 'We've been here a million times, so we know what to expect. The players know what's expected of them as well, so come Sunday we have to be ready.' League One Alloa handed Premier Sports Cup second-round trip to Rangers
League One side Alloa have been handed a Premier Sports Cup second-round trip to Rangers following Sunday's draw. The Wasps – the lowest-ranked team remaining in the tournament – were surprise winners of their group and will face Russell Martin's Gers at Ibrox on the weekend of August 16/17. Holders Celtic will host newly-promoted Falkirk in one of four all-Premiership ties. The others see Kilmarnock host Dundee United, Livingston at home to Hibernian, and St Mirren play Hearts in Paisley. St Johnstone, relegated from the top flight last term, will host Motherwell while Aberdeen have been drawn away to Championship side Morton. There is guaranteed to be at least one second-tier side in the last eight after Championship pair Partick Thistle and Ayr United were pitted together. St Mirren and Ayr became the last two sides to secure their second-round places on Sunday when Killian Phillips' first-half double set the Paisley men on course for a 2-1 home victory over the Honest Men in Group D. While the Buddies topped the section, Scott Brown's side also progressed as one of the three best runners-up despite losing their perfect record in the competition against their William Hill Premiership hosts. Dunfermline had been waiting in the wings hoping to profit from any Saints slip-up or an unlikely nine-goal defeat for Ayr, but their hopes of progressing were dashed by events in Paisley. The Buddies went ahead after Phillips fired home Roland Idowu's cutback from 15 yards out in the 16th minute, and the recently-capped Republic of Ireland midfielder doubled his tally in the 38th minute when he turned home another Idowu delivery from just outside the six-yard box. Ayr pulled one back in the 64th minute when Kevin Holt headed home Dom Thomas' corner to ensure a nervy finale for the hosts. Dundee – eliminated after losing their opening two fixtures – were the only top-flight side to fail to make it through the group stage.
