Irish tourist (29) dies following car crash on Bolivia's salt flats
AN IRISH TOURIST has died after a car overturned on Bolivia's salt flats on Friday. The victim, named locally as 29-year-old Oisin Hoy from Clontarf, was among a group of seven travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser when the accident happened shortly before 5pm. According to local media, the vehicle flipped over on the salt flats. Oisin Hoy was seriously injured in the crash, and later died while being transported to the nearby city of Potosi. Local police chief Colonel Wilson Flores told local media that the crash was believed to have been caused by excessive speed. Clontarf GAA have paid tribute to Oisin, noting his long-standing involvement with the club. A statement said he was 'remembered by all who played with him or coached him as a hugely positive person' whose 'trademark smile' was well known. 'His interest in travelling took him all over the world, most recently to South America,' the club added. Irish tourist fatally injured after car overturns in Bolivia
An Irish tourist has died in Bolivia after the vehicle he was travelling in overturned during their travels on Friday afternoon. The man, understood to be in his 30s, was among a group of seven travelling in the Toyota Landcruiser when the accident occurred shortly after 5pm on Friday. The tourists had been making their way to a local volcano when the incident happened, travelling a further 40 metres before coming to a halt. Bus crash kills at least 37 in Bolivia
At least 37 people have died and 30 left injured after two passenger buses collided in Bolivia, police said. The crash happened early on Saturday about 5km (3 miles) from the south-western city of Uyuni. One of the drivers was receiving intensive care while the other was in a stable condition, police commander Wilson Flores said. Images published in Bolivian media showed a badly damaged coach with its bodywork ripped off and luggage scattered on the roadside. The buses collided on the route between Uyuni and Colchani in Bolivia's Potosí department after a "lane invasion", local media reported. One bus was travelling to the western city of Oruro, where Oruro Carnival - one of Latin America's largest festivals - was taking place. The vehicles were recovered by 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT) and those injured were taken to hospitals in both Oruro and Potosí. Those who died have not been identified and the condition of the injured is yet to be determined. According to local media, Cdr Flores said police were awaiting the results of alcohol tests taken by the drivers. Deadly traffic accidents are common in Bolivia. More than 30 people were killed in February when a bus plunged almost 800m (2625 ft) into a ravine between the cities of Potosí and Oruro. In January, 19 people were killed when another bus came off a road in the same region, also near Potosí.
