(AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes) LOS ANGELES — The Winnipeg Jets took Swedish defenceman Sascha Boumedienne with the 28th overall pick in the NHL draft Friday. The six-foot-one, 175-pound Boumedienne registered three goals and 10 assists in 40 games with Boston University last season. Winnipeg won the Presidents' Trophy last season after posting the NHL's best regular-season record. After a miraculous seven-game series win over the St. Louis Blues, the Jets lost in six games to the Dallas Stars in the second round. When free agency opens Tuesday, the Jets will sign Winnipeg native and longtime Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews to a one-year contract. Talented winger Nikolaj Ehlers is expected to test the open market. Rounds two through seven at the draft take place on Saturday. The Jets have four remaining draft picks, one for each round except the second and fourth. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 27, 2025. The Canadian Press

NHL Trade Rumors: Hurricanes emerge as frontrunner for Nikolaj Ehlers as Kings and Sharks circle Jets winger

Nikolaj Ehlers is set to test free agency on July 1 (Image via AP) As NHL free agency approaches, Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after names on the market. After 10 seasons in Manitoba, the Danish forward has reportedly told the Jets he intends to test free agency on July 1—news that has sparked interest from multiple franchises across the league. Carolina Hurricanes viewed as frontrunner among teams interested in Ehlers NHL trade rumors are swirling as Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers prepares to hit free agency, drawing serious interest from contenders like the Hurricanes, Kings, and Sharks ahead of July 1. 'Hearing Nikolaj Ehlers has informed the Jets he will go to free agency on July 1. Door not closed on Manitoba, but will test the market,' tweeted NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on Thursday. — FriedgeHNIC (@FriedgeHNIC) While the Winnipeg Jets are still hoping to retain the skilled winger, it's clear other teams are preparing aggressive pitches. Among them, the Carolina Hurricanes—valued at $1.25 billion by Forbes—are reportedly 'very serious' about signing Ehlers, according to Friedman, who spoke during Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer. 'I think there are definitely some things in motion,' Friedman said. 'I've heard Carolina is very serious about Ehlers, but I also think he could end up just about anywhere. That's what's going to make this a really interesting situation — there are a lot of teams poking around, and they all seem to have slightly different priorities.' Kings and Sharks could shape Ehlers' next chapter, but fit varies by team Beyond Carolina, both the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks have emerged as potential suitors. The Kings are exploring multiple roster moves, while the Sharks, facing pressure to reach the salary cap floor, could view Ehlers as a strategic addition despite their ongoing rebuild. 'Some teams are looking at shorter-term fits,' Friedman noted. 'Then you've got teams like San Jose who need to hit the cap floor. So, Ehlers could have multiple types of suitors. ... I've also heard L.A. has a few irons in the fire.' Elliotte Friedman & Bob Stauffer on Evander Kane trade, free agency, & NHL Entry Draft on Oilers Now Jets still hoping to make their case for long-term loyalty Despite Ehlers' intention to explore options, Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff hasn't given up hope. He emphasized the team's long-standing relationship with Ehlers, who was drafted by the Jets and has been a consistent top-six forward. 'Nikolaj has been a player that has grown up in our organization,' Cheveldayoff said. 'Drafted, developed him, we'll put our best foot forward with him to try to make our case to be a unique Jet-for-life-type player.' Texas Rangers CF Wyatt Langford to IL again with oblique strain while RHP Nathan Eovaldi returns

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers center fielder Wyatt Langford has been put on the 10-day injured list because of an oblique strain for the second time this season. Chris Young, the team's president of baseball operations, said Friday that Langford has a 'very low grade' strain. The second-year outfielder hasn't played since Tuesday in Baltimore. 'Feel like it's just the right thing to do. With two off days, it shortens the amount of games missed,' Young said. 'Just getting this right on the front end.' The Rangers, also before the opener of their home series against Seattle, activated right-hander Nathan Eovaldi from the 15-day injured list to start Friday night, exactly one month after his last game before going on the IL because of elbow inflammation. Right-handed reliever Dane Dunning was sent back to Triple-A Round Rock. Michael Helman, a outfielder-middle infielder who was claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh last month, was being brought up from Triple-A to take over Langford's roster spot. Young said Langford's issue was 'just on the cusp' of whether he needed to go on the IL. But the move was backdated to Wednesday, and combined with off days for the Rangers on consecutive Thursdays, Langford will miss only eight games if he has the expected minimal IL stay. He would be eligible to return July 5 at San Diego. Langford missed nine games in mid-April while on the IL with a right oblique strain, while the latest issue is on the left side. He is hitting .232 with a team-leading 13 home runs and 31 RBIs. Bradford's surgery Left-hander Cody Bradford was back in the clubhouse with teammates and went to the pregame pitching meeting Friday, two days season-ending elbow surgery. Young said Bradford's surgery was successful, and that team physician Dr. Keith Meister did an internal brace procedure rather than a more extensive procedure. The pitcher will still be out at least 10-12 months, but that is shorter than if he had needed Tommy John surgery. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Bradford was expected to be part of the starting rotation this season, but was shut down during spring training in mid-March because of elbow soreness. His rehab had been going good until Bradford felt something in his elbow when he resumed throwing after a recent flu bug. The 27-year-old Bradford is 10-6 with a 4.28 ERA in 34 games (21 starts) for Texas the past two seasons. As a rookie, Bradford was 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in five relief appearances during the 2023 playoffs when the Rangers won their first World Series title. He pitched a scoreless inning in both of his World Series appearances. 'The brace procedure, optimistically, would mean a shorter timeline to returning to competition,' Young said. 'All things considered, everything went smoothly. It was the best of the outcomes we could have anticipated.' ___ AP MLB:

Playoff MVP Sam Bennett agrees on 8-year, $64 million contract to stay with Florida Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Sam Bennett walked to the front of the stage at the Florida Panthers' latest Stanley Cup championship parade, and before he could even speak the crowd began serenading him with their request. 'Eight more years! Eight more years!' they chanted, over and over. They got their wish. Bennett — who led the NHL with 15 goals in this year's playoffs and became the first Panthers player ever to score that many in a single postseason — is staying with the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions. He and Florida agreed Friday to a new eight-year contract worth $64 million, or $8 million per season. 'Sam is a special player who has mastered a unique blend of skill and physicality in his game, becoming one of the most impactful postseason performers of his generation,' Panthers general manager and hockey operations president Bill Zito said. 'He played an integral role in our two Stanley Cup championships, earning the franchise's first Conn Smythe trophy and is a dedicated contributor to our South Florida community off the ice. We are thrilled that he will continue his career with the Panthers.' Bennett was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as MVP of the playoffs, the first Florida player to ever win that award. The last time a Conn Smythe winner didn't open the following season with the same team he had that playoff run with was 1997, when goaltender Mike Vernon helped Detroit win that year's Cup — and then the Red Wings traded him to San Jose that summer. It is the first of three big decisions that the Panthers have been waiting on heading into free agency, the others being what forward Brad Marchand — a trade deadline pickup who became an enormous part of the run to this Cup — and defenseman Aaron Ekblad will do going forward. The Bennett signing is another huge move by general manager and hockey operations president Bill Zito, who now has eight players — all of them key parts of the team — under contract with the Panthers through at least the 2029-30 season. Bennett joins Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe, Anton Lundell, Seth Jones and Gustav Forsling on that list. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. The raise is a massive one for Bennett, who just finished the final year of a four-year contract that paid him just under $18 million. He had a postseason like almost none other; the only other player to have at least 15 goals and 48 penalty minutes in the same playoff run was Pittsburgh's Kevin Stevens in 1991. He had given indications throughout this offseason process — including at a nightclub during the Panthers' days-long initial Cup celebration — that he intended to remain in Florida, but nothing got officially done until Friday. Bennett is coming off perhaps his finest season, with 25 goals and 26 assists in the regular season for a career-best 51 points. ___ AP NHL:
