How young Queensland jockey Angela Jones wowed Gai Waterhouse in Winx Guineas victory
After 161 Group 1 wins and an extraordinary career in racing, it takes a lot to take Gai Waterhouse 's breath away. But young Queensland jockey Angela Jones has done it. 'Your ride on 300 took my breath away. Just loved it Angela,' Waterhouse texted, complete with an accompanying emoji, after Jones scored the Winx Guineas on Waterhouse galloper The Three Hundred. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Jones returns from suspension at Doomben on Wednesday, leading the Brisbane riding premiership race by two from Emily Lang who has now also copped time from stewards. One way or other, history will be made at the end of the month when one of the duo becomes the first female rider to take out the Brisbane premiership. Racing's first lady is a huge fan of Jones, the jockey from the Queensland bush who is well placed to claim the riding title. You sense that high praise from Waterhouse is likely to mean more to Jones than many of her 416 career winners. 'I could not be more impressed with Angela Jones,' Waterhouse told Racenet. 'I thought her ride the other day on The Three Hundred was right up there with Group 1 jockeys who I have dealt with through the years. 'I love jockeys who can show initiative and I love jockeys who can ride on the speed and who can get a horse to lift to another level. 'She did all that on The Three Hundred. 'I wrote to her, I said 'you literally were magical'. 'I don't often write that to jockeys. 'She is a very exciting young rider and is right up there with the top class jockeys in Australia.' Waterhouse said it's probably no surprise an increasing number of young female jockeys are making their mark. The legendary Hall of Fame trainer scratches her head when she says young girls now appear to be more likely to want to become jockeys than young boys. 'It's remarkable that two female jockeys are fighting out the premiership in Brisbane,' Waterhouse said. 'There are so few boys these days coming into the profession as riders. 'The number of boys are so inferior to the number of girls who are joining the (riding) ranks. 'I can't quite work it out. 'Maybe the boys are having more trouble with their weight these days than the girls.' Waterhouse has recently returned from a working holiday overseas with husband Robbie. She said the clear highlight of her travels was her experience at the famous Kentucky Derby. Waterhouse has seen everything in racing, but nothing quite like the spectacle at Churchill Downs. 'It was the most incredible experience I've ever had on a racetrack,' Waterhouse said. 'It was so wet on the day that we in Australia would have called it off, but the Americans just ran it. 'The emotion that pours out, it was something very special. 'The hospitality and all the big famous names are there, it was just great. 'It was a bit like in England, but I think the Americans are a little bit warmer than the English trainers. 'They (American trainers) are a lot like us, I found.'

Suspension twist as Emily Lang closes gap in Brisbane jockeys' premiership race
Emily Lang narrowed the gap in the Brisbane metro jockeys' premiership with a double at Doomben but a stint on the sidelines is set to hurt her claims. Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Angela Jones remains in the box seat to win the Brisbane metro jockeys' premiership but her nearest rival has certainly made it an exciting race following a double to Emily Lang at Doomben on Saturday. With the Queensland winter carnival done and dusted, the interest has now turned to who will become the first female jockey to win the Brisbane premiership. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Lang narrowed the gap to just two wins on Saturday when she saluted early in the meeting on the Tony Gollan-trained favourites Sicilian ($3.10) and Lockyer ($1.60). Jones, who is serving a 10-day suspension and didn't ride on Saturday, sits on 64 wins, with Lang on 62. But here comes the twist to an intriguing tale of two talented jockeys. The 24-year-old Lang picked up an eight-day suspension for careless riding from the Sunshine Coast on the last weekend of the carnival and will miss the next two metropolitan meetings, gift-wrapping Jones the chance to extend her lead before the season ends on July 31. — 7HorseRacing 🎠(@7horseracing) July 12, 2025 'I don't know who's going to win,' said Gollan, who is the boss of both jockeys. 'They're both doing a good job for the stable and that's what is important for me. 'I'll be proud of whoever does win the premiership and we'll be there to support whoever doesn't win. 'It's a very exciting end to the season because this time of the year there's not a lot going on, it's off-season racing. 'To have something like this going on in the background, it adds a level of excitement.' • 'Very exciting' In Flight on Group 1 path after Monash success James Orman was the runaway leader in the metro jockeys' premiership before he left to ride in Hong Kong in February, leaving him marooned on 45 wins. Lang went close to a treble late on Saturday when, for a fleeting moment, $41 roughie Fireforce looked like pulling off a huge upset in the last race before Noble Decree ($5) surged clear to win a 3YO Handicap over 1350m ahead of $2.70 favourite She Ours, with the Kelly Schweida-trained Fireforce just over a length back in third. Mister Bianco - a controversial late scratching from last week's Group 3 Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast - produced a terrific effort with a hefty 61kg on his back to go from last to fourth under Melbourne Cup champion jockey Robbie Dolan. 'I'll keep trying to do my best when I come back (from suspension),' Lang said shortly after hopping off Fireforce. 'I'm sure Ang will put a few on me next week, the way she's riding, but we've both been getting very good opportunities. 'It's definitely going to hurt me a little bit next week, not being there to keep kicking on, but I can only do my best.' Gollan said whichever one of his star jockeys ended up winning the metro crown would have fully deserved it. 'They didn't get anything given to them in our stable, they've earned the rights they get,' Brisbane's premier trainer said. 'Both girls are there doing the work and they've done a great job all season. 'It's a shame there's only going to be one winner. They're both dear to the hearts of everyone in our stable and we're really proud of both girls. 'I guess it'll come down to who gets the rub of the green in these next few weeks.' Paul Shailer hits back at criticism to scratch Winx Guineas favourite Mister Bianco
Paul Shailer has hit back at criticism of his decision to scratch Mister Bianco from last weekend's Group 3 Winx Guineas (1600m), with the Gold Coast trainer insisting there were no suitable jockeys to ride the temperamental gelding. Shailer refuted suggestions that there were senior riders available to steer Mister Bianco in the Winx Guineas following a back injury to Ryan Maloney in an earlier race at the Sunshine Coast last Saturday, adding that he was 'comfortable' with the decision. in an industry that relied heavily on wagering turnover. However, Shailer insisted he had no option but to scratch Mister Bianco given the lack of experienced jockeys available on the day. The gelding's regular riders Michael Rodd (broken hand) and Andrew Mallyon (holidays) were unavailable to ride a horse that needed a jockey with 'quiet hands'. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott -trained The Three Hundred ended up taking out the Winx Guineas, thanks to a superb ride from in-form hoop Angela Jones. 'He was the favourite in a $300,000 race so obviously we had every intention of running the horse,' Shailer said. After learning of Maloney's injury, Shailer approached stewards, who told him there were only three jockeys available to ride Mister Bianco – apprentice Corey Sutherland, Adam Sewell and Scott Sheargold. Three hundred reasons to cheer! 🥳 The Three Hundred leads all the way in the G3 Winx Guineas at @SCTurfClub! Ange Jones with a winning double. @GaiWaterhouse1 @TrilogyRacing1 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 5, 2025 'Corey has ridden for me before and I've got no problem with him,' Shailer said. 'He's an apprentice who's just been granted his metropolitan licence so I certainly didn't think he'd be a suitable replacement. 'I say this with the utmost respect but these are the facts – Adam Sewell hasn't ridden a winner in his last 50 rides and he's only had one metropolitan ride in his last 50 rides. 'Scott has ridden two winners in his last 50 rides – one at Dalby and one at Kilcoy. 'He's had one metropolitan ride in his last 50, being at the Sunshine Coast on a Saturday on a horse that was 200-1. 'I've got nothing against these jockeys, I'm sure they're great human beings. 'But when they've got 100 rides between them and they've ridden two winners and they're riding the favourite in a $300,000 race on a horse that's been a work in progress and has its vices, I felt it wouldn't be fair to the punters or my connections that the horse goes around. 'My connections and myself were all in agreement that it was best for the horse's welfare and benefit that we scratch and save him for another day. 'Whether that's our right or not, people have their views on it and they're entitled to that, but we're entitled to our views on it.' Kyle Wilson-Taylor Doomben, before going for a spell.

Angela Jones extends lead in Brisbane jockeys' premiership with Winx Guineas victory on The Three Hundred
Angela Jones has put one hand on the Brisbane jockeys' premiership crown with her dominant victory in the Group 3 Winx Guineas on Saturday at the Sunshine Coast. The talented hoop went into the meeting, the last of the Queensland winter carnival, on 62 metro victories – three ahead of her nearest rival Emily Lang. And she extended her healthy lead to five wins after saluting on King Yoshi in an earlier Benchmark 80 sprint (1200m) and then on the Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse -trained The Three Hundred in the $300,000 Winx Guineas (1600m). Jones will serve a 10-day suspension following Saturday's meeting for careless riding which stemmed from last weekend's Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara on Floozie but she will appeal the severity of the ban at a Queensland Racing Appeals Panel hearing on Monday. There was dramatic news earlier on Saturday when reports emerged that jockey Ryan Maloney had hurt his back while steering Caspernova to a runner-up finish in the race won by Jones on King Yoshi, and he was unable to ride favourite Mister Bianco in the Winx Guineas. Sensationally, Gold Coast trainer Paul Shailer could not find a suitable replacement jockey and he was forced to scratch Mister Bianco from the $300,000 race. The Three Hundred ($11) won by 1½ lengths ahead of $34 roughie Ramp It Up and Towoomba galloper Apuntar ($6.50) on the Soft 6 track. Three hundred reasons to cheer! 🥳 The Three Hundred leads all the way in the G3 Winx Guineas at @SCTurfClub! Ange Jones with a winning double. @GaiWaterhouse1 @TrilogyRacing1 â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 5, 2025 Jones said she was grateful to receive support from the powerful Waterhouse/Bott stable. 'You know their horses are fit,' she said. 'Maybe he wasn't putting it all into his races when he gets back so we really made a point that if we can get him away cleanly, we'd send him to the front and he'd be winning. 'We were able to do that – lovely and relaxed – and he is a different horse when he doesn't have other horses to look around at. 'It was a super dominant win today. 'It has been a good season and hopefully I get a few more (wins) before I serve my suspension next week.' Waterhouse-Bott stable representative Neil Paine said The Three Hundred had a split personality, but he was glad to see that the three-year-old gelding behaved at the gates on Saturday. 'The problem with this horse is that he's a bugger at the machines,' Paine said. 'We told Ang to keep him warmed up and if he jumps to put him right into the race. 'Over the last one or two starts, he was slowly away and he gets back and starts to lose interest. I was really happy when he jumped and Ang kept pushing forward. 'The pace was a little bit fast early but she pushed him forward and got him balanced once she got him to the lead. 'Gee he surprised me when he kicked away. He is a horse with promise but there's two of them.' The emphatic victory came 10 years after mighty mare Winx won this race, then called the Sunshine Coast Guineas, as part of her incredible 33 consecutive victories before she retired in April 2019. Reigning Melbourne Cup champion Knight's Choice also won the Winx Guineas in 2023, with Jaden Lloyd on board.

Beau Dazzler takes unorthodox path to Winx Guineas at Sunshine Coast
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. It's unconventional and quirky but Tony Sears reckons dropping his colt back 800m in distance might just be a masterstroke as he prepares to line up in Saturday's $300,000 Group 3 Winx Guineas. It's not every day you see a horse dropping so far in distance but that's what Beau Dazzler will be doing as he aims up in the Guineas over 1600m after last being seen in the Group 1 Queensland Derby over 2400m. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Beau Dazzler is a $14 chance in the Group 3 Guineas on the Sunshine Coast with some punters not quite sure what to make of the left-field blueprint. Beau Dazzler copped a wide run in the Derby when being beaten more than nine lengths but Sears, who co-trains with daughter Maddy, now believes the colt's sweet spot could potentially be 1800m. • 'He told me straight up I had cancer': Legendary racing doctor retires Sears feels you need a horse who runs a strong 1800m to win the 1600m Guineas given the expansive nature of the big Sunshine Coast track. 'We were going to spell him after the Derby, but he hadn't had many runs this campaign,' Sears said. 'He was only third-up into the Derby and I'm not sure whether training him for a Derby really suited him. 'We decided to set him for the Winx Guineas because we figured that you needed a horse who could run 1800m to win the Guineas and he certainly is that. 'He hasn't raced for a while and he had a few days in the paddock and he's fresh and going well. 'I am now thinking he is a really good mile to 1800(m) horse. 'I know on Saturday that the distance will be no problem at all and he handles the sting out of the track.' Regular rider Jag Guthmann-Chester will again partner Beau Dazzler who has drawn barrier nine in the Winx Guineas, the race so named because it was the start of Winx's famous 33-race winning streak in 2015. Paul Shailer-trained Mister Bianco, who wears the same colours as Winx and is part-owned by Peter Tighe, is the $3.40 favourite for the Winx Guineas off the back of three successive wins. But Mister Bianco has drawn wide and punters must also note he has never raced beyond 1400m before. • Gollan filly makes late winter return with eye to summer Meanwhile, Sears is certain his speedy sprinter Steady Ready is the one to beat as the $3.10 favourite in the $200,000 Open Plate (1000m). Steady Ready was well beaten when resuming in the Lightning Handicap at Eagle Farm last month but Sears said there were clear excuses. 'He had a few issues when he last raced, he galloped on his heel and he was lame for a week afterwards,' Sears said. 'But we took him and trialled him at Beaudesert and I thought he went really good. 'If he is back to his best, which I think he is, he is the one they all have to beat.' Originally published as Beau Dazzler takes unorthodox path to Winx Guineas at Sunshine Coast
