Two Wiregrass students appointed to U.S. Military Academies

Dothan, Ala. (WDHN) — Two standout Wiregrass students are among the 21 Alabamians appointed to U.S. service academies for the Class of 2029, according to a recent announcement from U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville. Aiden Harkey, a graduate of Slocomb High School, has accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Harkey says his experience at Boys State — where he met a former cadet from West Point, and a Wiregrass native — inspired him to apply. He plans to study chemical engineering and hopes to return to his community after his service to give back and support future generations. 'After my four years at the academy I hope to come back and serve my community, potientally doing aviation at Ft. Novosel and after my service hopefully come back and support my community that has supported me throughout,' Harkey explains. Cammi Tillery, a graduate of Enterprise High School, has earned a scholarship to attend the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School. Tillery, who comes from a strong military-based family, plans to pursue a career in military intelligence and is committed to serving on active duty after completing her training. ' I come from a military family both my parents are Army retired, my oldest brother is Army, and my second oldest [brother] is a marine; so its just something you're born into,' says Tillery, adding that she is very excited to serve her country. West Point is widely recognized as one of the premier leadership institutions in the world. Graduating from the academy is a major stepping stone for those pursuing careers in military service and leadership, opening doors to specialized training, advanced education, and impactful roles within the U.S. military and beyond. In a press release, Senator Tuberville praised the appointees for their discipline, dedication, and patriotism. 'It was an honor to nominate these Alabamians for an appointment, and I have no doubt they'll continue to make our state and country proud,' Tuberville said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Structure fire erupting in Slocomb

SLOCOMB, Ala. (WDHN) – Slocomb Fire Rescue and several other fire units responded to a call about a house on fire in Slocomb Friday night around 11 p.m. Slocomb Fire and other units were dispatched to 1517 East County Road 4 south of Slocomb, where they arrived at a home completely covered in a blaze. Fadette Fire Protection District made a post about the fire to Facebook, which said the caller reported a working fire in an upstairs bedroom. The caller said everyone exited the home safely. Fire units poured hose lines on the second floor to fight the blaze, where they fought through heavy smoke in three separate rooms. Firefighters were able to bring the fires under control. Also, the post said Wiregrass Electric Cooperative disconnected electrical services to the home. Right now, no significant injuries were reported. We will provide updates on this fire if we receive any. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

WATCH: Wiregrass veterans met with warm welcome on return from D.C.

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Veterans who had the chance to visit memorial sites in Washington D.C. this week were met with thunderous applause, cheers, and even bagpipes on their return from the nation's capital. The veterans were able to visit Arlington National Cemetery, the World War II memorials and Vietnam Remembrance Wall, and the Air Force Memorial in Arlington all on Wednesday. READ MORE: Wiregrass veterans tour war monuments in the nation's capital The group of veterans, chaperones, and WDHN reporter Robert Smith landed in Birmingham airport Wednesday afternoon. While walking through the airport towards the bus that would take the veterans home to the Wiregrass, they were met with applause and cheers from friends, loved ones, active military personnel, and military appreciation groups. The veterans were even accompanied by bagpipes and drums as they walked through the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. After an over three hour drive, the veterans returned to the Daleville Community Center, and were met with even more admirers and bagpipes. For many Vietnam veterans, Wednesday's welcome home was a far cry from what they experianced on their return from war, as many of their fellow Americans did not view them as heroes. Some of those soldiers were spit on or yelled at, due to the visceral response to a war that had become a nationwide political issue. 'After the way I was treated when I came back from Vietnam, this day has been wonderful. I just can't believe people are so nice, it makes me feel very good,' said Army Veteran Lonnie Daniels of his trip. The trip was funded and orchestrated by Wiregrass Honor Flights, Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Wiregrass veterans tour war monuments in the nation's capital

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WDHN) — Several Wiregrass veterans had the chance to visit the nation's capital to see the monuments that honor the sacrifices made by our troops overseas. Funded and orchestrated by Wiregrass Honor Flights, these veterans were able to visit the Arlington National Cemetery, where they watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There, our local veterans were celebrated and thanked by other visitors for their service. After that, the group toured the World War II memorials and the Vietnam Remembrance Wall. Many of these vets served overseas in Vietnam and Korea, making this part of the trip rather personal. Robert Anderson, a retired Vietnam Army Pilot, saw the names of his friends who were killed in battle, a moment of nostalgia and sadness. Anderson recollected those men, including one with whom he had roomed. 'I hated to see him go, we lost another buddy about two weeks later in combat there. You always wondered, and being this close, I wanted to get a trace and see this wall because I know all of these folks gave a great sacrifice to be on this wall, even though you'd rather they weren't.' Afterward, the trip ended at the Air Force Memorial in Arlington. There, the veterans were treated to a special performance from the Air Force Honor Guard Drill team. Followed by a meet and greet with that drill team. For many Vietnam veterans, returning to the United States after their tour was a battle of its own; those soldiers returned home to find that some Americans didn't view them as heroes. Some of those soldiers were spit on or yelled at, due to the visceral response to a war that had become a nationwide political issue. But Wednesday's trip was solely about honoring the sacrifice they made for our country decades ago. 'After the way I was treated when I came back from Vietnam, this day has been wonderful. I just can't believe people are so nice, it makes me feel very good,' said Army Veteran Lonnie Daniels. Our veterans then returned to the Wiregrass Wednesday night, welcomed home with a ceremony at the Daleville Cultural Arts and Convention Center. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
