After going OB at 13, Robert MacIntyre rallies to make cut on the number at Scottish Open

Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside. 'The Costa del Lothian,' smiled Grant Forrest of a shimmering, sun-soaked scene that Judith Chalmers used to revel in on an episode of Wish You Were Here. Forrest is certainly glad he's here for the weekend. So too is Robert MacIntyre. The reigning Genesis Scotttish Open champion from Oban was facing an early exit as he slithered outside the cut mark but dug in, showed his usual resolve and hauled himself back inside the safety zone. His 1-over 71 was not a thing of beauty but it got the job done and he finished on the 1-under limit. 'I played absolutely terribly,' admitted MacIntyre, while delivering a sizeable sigh of relief. Things were looking particularly bleak when he lost his drive on the 13th and ended up with a potentially ruinous double-bogey six. 'It was one of the worst shots I've hit all season,' he said of a tee-shot which sailed out of bounds. 'At the time, I'm thinking, 'oh well, this is it, this is curtains'. I could have lost the plot there, but I was like, 'I've just got to keep fighting here'.' And fight he did. The salvage operation began immediately. MacIntyre knocked his tee-shot on the par-3 14th into four feet and gobbled up the birdie chance. On the par-3 17th, the Scot threatened the flag again and a delightfully flighted 6-iron into 3 feet spawned another birdie as he moved back to 1 under for the championship. 'I guess growing up at Glencruitten on a short golf course with loads of par-3s helped me in the end,' he said of that important brace of twos. A two-putt from distance for a par on the last completed the recovery. 'There's no other way to describe today other than a poor performance,' added the Ryder Cup player. 'But I just fought it out and ground it out and I got away with it.' Forrest, meanwhile, enjoyed a more serene passage into the closing 36-holes. In his own backyard of East Lothian, the 32-year-old moved onto a 5-under aggregate with a largely trouble-free 68. 'Links golf is hard to beat when it's dry and sunny,' said Forrest. The home comforts are certainly suiting him to a tee this week. 'It's nice just being at home,' he said of the domestic bliss. 'We can stick the barbecue on when it's like this too.' Forrest has been wrestling with his game this season but there continues to be glimmers of hope that his fortunes can turn. 'Sometimes there are a couple of shots, that you may not be comfortable with hitting, but you pull them off and things like that can turn things around,' added the former Scottish Amateur champion, who won on the DP World Tour back in 2021. A good example of such a morale-booster came on the par-5 10th. Forrest had just leaked his only shot of the day on the previous hole but hit a cracking drive, then unleashed a 5-wood to 20-feet and two-putted for a birdie. Forrest and MacIntyre will be joined at the weekend by Fifer, Connor Syme, who double-bogeyed his final hole in a 71 but edged through on one-under. Calum Hill, one shot off the lead after a 65 in round one, endured a torrid second day, though, and missed the cut on 2-over after a shattering 77. The 30-year-old hadn't made a bogey in his opening round but stumbled to five on the first nine holes of round two as he plummeted down the standings. Ewen Ferguson and Richie Ramsay also finished on 2-over totals and joined the Scottish casualty list.

'Thank you for the miraculous work...' Pink Floyd's David Gilmour pays tribute to Nordoff and Robbins charity as he accepts O2 Silver Clef Award

Pink Floyd legend David Gilmour received the prestigious O2 Silver Clef Award for his contribution to music in London on Wednesday night (03.07.25). The 79-year-old rock icon accepted the accolade at the O2 Silver Clef Awards ceremony from Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and during his speech, Gilmour praised 'the wonderful Nordoff and Robbins music therapy charity" that the awards support every year. He added: "My relationship with them goes back 50 years – thank you to them for this award and for the miraculous work they do, and have done since then.' The star-studded ceremony, hosted by Edith Bowman and held at JW Marriott Grosvenor House hotel, brought together artists, industry leaders and celebrity supporters for an unforgettable evening of celebration, fundraising and reflection on the transformative power of music. Other winners on the night included Sophie Ellis-Bextor who was crowned Best Female, receiving her statuette from songwriter Cathy Dennis, Mika, who picked up the Global Impact Award for his multilingual stardom and advocacy and The Last Dinner Party, who won the Best New Music prize. Rick Astley, The Corrs, IDLES, Soul II Soul, Noah Kahan, AURORA, Tony Christie and Chase and Status also took home top honours. The 49th annual O2 Silver Clef Awards, raised £715,000 and counting for Nordoff and Robbins, the UK's largest music therapy charity. Before the ceremony started, Sandra Schembri, CEO of Nordoff and Robbins, admitted she was looking forward to meeting one of her heroes in Wish You Were Here singer Gilmour. Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, Sandra said: "So as a prog rock child, the fact that David Gilmore is in the room, I'm going to try and be very professional, but I doubt I'll be able to!" Sandra also teased that there are already big plans happening to mark the event's 50th anniversary in 2026. She said: "So next year is our 50th, we've been planning already. It's going to be very big, and we are hoping to have all our recipients in the room, so watch the space!" Emphasising the important work Nordoff and Robbins does with adults and children with various needs, Sandra added: "Music therapy, done by music therapists, it's music in the hands of an expert, and what it is is when words fail, music speaks. "Music therapists helps them access that. We work with children, special education needs, we work with people with dementia, we've had children speak for the first time in some of our therapy sessions, and we've had people with dementia who've been closed off for many, many, many years actually find themselves and recognise their family again for the first time in years in a session, so t's very powerful. "We find the musicians that connect with us, they see what else music can do. That what they that they feel, and they see their audience, that connection, that really exists. When they see that connection being used in this extra way, it's an instant connection with the event, so for them, it gets in their hearts."

One of Venice's Best Rooftops Returns as a Breezy Greek Hangout With Unbeatable Views

Skip to main content Current eater city: Los Angeles The prime rooftop of Venice's Hotel Erwin has been remolded into Kassi Venice Beach, opening on Friday, July 4, with a tight menu of Greek-inflected mezze, grilled skewers, and salads, plus a view of the Pacific Ocean. Coming from the Wish You Were Here group, which operates Elephante in Santa Monica and Belles Beach House in Venice, Kassi first opened in West Third Street back in 2019 before closing and resurfacing in Las Vegas's Virgin Hotels. There, it morphed into more of a party-like Italian American restaurant that befits Vegas. But the menu will return to its original Greek and Eastern Mediterranean flavors in Venice, operating from lunch to fairly late. On the rooftop, umbrellas encircle an elevated patch of clipped greenery, with lounge seating and dinner tables accommodating 185 diners at a time. Swaying palm trees and the shoreline offer a real island vibe as skateboarders, cyclists, and performing dancers thrive on the concrete expanse just a few blocks away on the Venice Boardwalk. Takes on Greek classics like a spanakopita quesadilla, fried zucchini chips, crispy saganaki with Fresno chile jam, and a cucumber-tomato-feta salad comprise the starters; familiar mezzes like hummus and tzatziki come with za'atar-sprinkled flat bread. Five-ounce portions of skewers feature lamb meatballs with pomegranate molasses, beef tenderloin in red chermoula, and harissa honey chicken. The food options are limited enough that decision fatigue shouldn't settle in. Kassi is as much about the drinks as it is panoramic views. Shaken sippers like the Oracle of Delphi mix tequila with watermelon, mazzura, and cucumber, while draft cocktails like honeydew thyme paloma should help the bartenders churn out boozy drinks. White and red wines lean toward Greek origins, while Bondi Brewing Co. lager hints at Mathers' and Lim's upbringings in Australia. Wish You Were Here, founded by Nick Mathers and helmed by chef Thomas Lim, seems to do these breezy spaces well, given the success of Belles and Elephante, the latter of which has expanded into other states like Arizona. Kassi should fit seamlessly into the Venice restaurant milieu, a relaxed, easygoing Greek restaurant with stunning vistas for days. Kassi Venice Beach is open Sunday to Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and until 12 a.m. Thursday to Saturday; it's located at 1697 Pacific Avenue, Venice, CA, 90291, with reservations on OpenTable . Tickets to the opening July 4 party, also available on OpenTable, cost $40 each. See More:

Simple Minds, Bellahouston Park, Glasgow **** Back in their mid-Eighties pomp, Simple Minds were among a coterie of bands who modernised the tradition of the stadium show, with the beefy soundtrack to match. Four decades on, they braved the rain to perform their first outdoor gig in their native city since their legendary Ibrox shows of 1986, true events at a time when Glasgow was not so blessed with open-air extravaganzas. With his usual galvanising charm, frontman Jim Kerr claimed that, despite growing up on the southside of Glasgow, he and guitarist Charlie Burchill had never visited Bellahouston Park before now. Back in their adolescence, they couldn't afford the bus fare; now, he deadpanned, they have their bus passes. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Frontman Jim Kerr led Simple Minds in a crowd-pleasing set (Picture: Jean Christopher Verhaegan/AFP/Getty) 'We're going to have a great night guaranteed,' he proclaimed with justified confidence, having opened the show with the undeniable bassline of the mighty Waterfront. However, the main body of the set was to be given over to a celebration of their 1985 hit album Once Upon A Time, which caught the band at their commercial, if not creative peak. Album tracks Oh Jungleland, Come A Long Way and Wish You Were Here were scattered through the set, not quite landing with the potency of the big anthems nor the curated cuts from the rest of the catalogue such as the eternal Glittering Prize and atmospheric instrumental Theme from Great Cities. However, drummer Cherisse Osei made almost every song sound like the big finish, while soulful powerhouse co-vocalist Sarah Brown shone on All The Things She Said and Sanctify Yourself. Kerr encouraged the audience to milk those 'la-la-las' on non-album single Don't You (Forget About Me) before dialling down the volume and upping the Celtic mysticism for Belfast Child.

Black Coffee will headline the impressive line-up, bringing along some of his international friends to perform live alongside him. While the artists are yet to be announced, Hey Neighbour assures attendees that Black Coffee, as an addition, will surely remind them why he is the 'leader of the pack'. Like the curation of most major events, it did not go down without some ups and downs as well as disappointments. Nigerian artist Rema, who was set to headline day two of the music festival alongside rapper Kendrick Lamar, had to be removed from the line-up after cancelling all his December performances. Initially, the event was scheduled for a full weekend, but it was recently trimmed down to two days, August 30 - 31. In addition to that announcement, they revealed more local talent to be added to the jam-packed line-up, but South Africans were not exactly forthcoming and were not shy to let it be known. After the event organisers announced the addition of Holly Rey, many hopeful attendees expressed their disappointment, questioning who listens to the artist. X user @Shaun_thefirst asked: 'Guys, who is making these decisions?' 'Bona themselves do they listen to Holly Rey? Have they ever picked their phone up to play a Holly Rey song? Would you leave your house to go listen to Holly Rey? Name me 5 Holly Rey songs,' he added. In true South African fashion, Rey clapped back at the critic. 'My bank account, Spotify streams and multiple songs that have gone multi platinum, in more than just Mzansi, would beg to differ, but who am I to argue with a wanna be DJ who puts 'umthandi wegqom' as their bio,' said Rey. Hey Neighbour will take off at Legends Adventure Farm, Pretoria. Grammy-award-winning rapper Doja Cat, United Kingdom sensation Central Cee and 'Mutt' hitmaker Leon Thomas have been announced as the international headline acts.
