‘Fantastic Four' Star Julia Garner Says She's ‘Gonna Still Do My Job' Amid Backlash to Silver Surfer Genderswap

Julia Garner doesn't care what people think about her playing Silver Surfer in 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' While speaking to BBC at the film's London premiere, Garner was asked about the initial response from some fans who thought a man should play the Silver Surfer. The 'Wolf Man' star said she didn't pay much mind to the discourse and focused on delivering her best version of the character. She also noted that she plays a variation on the character, adding, 'Also, it's Shalla-Bal, so it's different.' Shalla-Bal, first seen in 'The Silver Surfer' #1 in 1968, is the female counterpart to Norrin Radd, who was featured in 2007's 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.' In that film, the humanoid alien was played by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne. As the BBC notes, after the first 'Fantastic Four' trailer debuted, the response to Garner's Surfer was overwhelmingly positive. Garner said she was excited to see the hype from fans. 'I was just happy that people are resonating with it, just like any other project,' Garner added. 'I'm grateful to be at this dance, to be completely honest with you.' Other cast members include Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka the Thing. Ralph Ineson plays Galactus, while Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne and John Malkovich round out the cast. AMC makes major theater change that will frustrate customers

AMC Theaters (AMC) had a rough start to 2025. The theater chain suffered a major loss as it struggled to attract moviegoers, despite major releases such as "Captain America: Brave New World," "Snow White," "Wolf Man," and "Dog Man." In its first-quarter earnings report for 2025, AMC revealed that its total revenues fell by about 9% year-over-year, while movie theater attendance in the U.S. dropped by 11%. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter AMC also reported a net loss of $202.1 million during the quarter, which is higher than the $163.5 million net loss it suffered during the same quarter last year. Related: AMC announces generous offer to win back customers "Setting aside those first quarters directly impacted by Covid and its aftermath, the January to March industry box office in 2025 was the lowest it has been since 1996," said AMC CEO Adam Aron in the report. The dip in attendance comes after AMC's average movie ticket price in the U.S. reached $12.31 during the first quarter of this year, which is higher than the $12.19 average it reported for the same quarter in 2024. Movie ticket prices have been rising over the past few years amid inflation. According to recent data from The Numbers, the average movie ticket price in the U.S. was $11.31 in 2024, which is 3% higher than the $10.94 average in 2023. As prices increase, some consumers have been avoiding movie theaters like the flu. A recent survey from the Wall Street Journal found that 65% of consumers said they prefer to watch movies at home, while 35% said they prefer to watch films in theaters. Amid this trend, AMC has made a bold move to dodge further price increases; however, customers may not be thrilled about the decision. The theater chain has reportedly landed a deal with cinema advertising company National CineMedia to run more commercials before movie screenings begin, according to a recent report from The New York Times. AMC claims this deal will allow it to rely less on increasing movie ticket prices to boost its revenue. Related: Paramount makes drastic decision amid shift in customer behavior "For the past five years, AMC has sought out crucial revenue that is not reliant on the increase of base ticket prices," said AMC in a statement to the Times, adding "while AMC was initially reluctant to bring this to our theaters, our competitors have fully participated for more than five years without any direct impact to their attendance." The move from AMC comes after its top rivals, Regal and Cinemark, signed the same deal with National CineMedia in 2019. AMC was also offered the deal that same year; however, it "flatly rejected" it due to its concerns that "U.S. moviegoers would react quite negatively to the concept," according to a press release. The deal is expected to make pre-show advertisements last, on average, 20 to 30 minutes long. It is no surprise that AMC is continuing to dodge increasing its ticket prices as it has recently made several attempts to make moviegoing more affordable for consumers, who are battling inflation and higher costs of living. A few months ago, the theater chain added a new A-List Classic tier subscription to its flagship subscription service AMC Stubs A-List. The new tier offers a lower-price plan for guests who prefer to watch a maximum of one movie per week at AMC Classic locations. It also made several tweaks to AMC Stubs A-List to attract more frugal customers, such as expanding A-List weekly movie access from three titles a week to four, and lowering the age eligibility from 16 to 13 to attract more teens and families into theaters. During an earnings call in May, Aron said these changes are "designed to ease the pain of a healthy price increase." AMC quietly plans generous offer to win back customers

AMC Theatres (AMC) has recently suffered from a slump in moviegoers, despite recent highly anticipated movie releases. In AMC's first-quarter earnings report for 2025, it revealed that its total revenues declined by roughly 9% year-over-year during the quarter. Specifically, in the U.S., movie theater attendance dropped by 11%. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter AMC also reported a net loss of $202.1 million during the quarter, which is steeper than the $163.5 million net loss it suffered during the same quarter last year. Related: AMC sees tailwinds from blockbuster movies, but one problem lingers The loss comes after long-awaited movies such as "Captain America: Brave New World," "Wolf Man," "Dog Man," and "Snow White" were released in theaters earlier this year. In the report, AMC Adam Aron acknowledged that the box office faced declines earlier this year, but emphasized that it is now bouncing back amid more recent movie releases. "Setting aside those first quarters directly impacted by Covid and its aftermath, the January to March industry box office in 2025 was the lowest it has been since 1996," said Aron. "If that level of activity were to continue, of course it would be highly problematic for movie theatres. But to the contrary, since April 1, movie theatre demand has been booming. The April 2025 industry-wide domestic box office was double that of April 2024, and so far in May the box office again has been running at double the rate of a year ago." Related: Comcast raises red flag about unexpected customer behavior In April, movies such as "A Minecraft Movie," "Sinners," and "The Accountant 2" have been drawing large crowds into theaters and breaking box-office milestones. Aron also touted upcoming movie releases such as "Lilo & Stitch," "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," "M3GAN 2.0," "Superman," and "Avatar: Fire and Ash," which are all expected to be huge box-office successes. "It is going to be one potentially huge movie after another, all the way through the year with 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' opening in mid-December," said Aron. Following this recent heightened momentum, AMC is switching gears in order to keep moviegoers interested and attract even more to its theaters. The cinema chain is reportedly contemplating cutting the price of its movie tickets by 50% on Wednesdays, according to a new report from Bloomberg. AMC has allegedly discussed this change with major Hollywood studios and will start debuting the deal on July 9. The move from AMC comes after its average ticket price for movie tickets in its U.S. theaters reached $12.31 during the first quarter of this year, which is higher than the $12.19 average it reported for the same quarter in 2024. Horror Thriller ‘Wolf Man' Coming To Streaming On Peacock This Week

Christopher Abbott in "Wolf Man." Wolf Man — a remake of the Universal Studios Monsters classic The Wolf Man starring Lon Chaney Jr. — begins streaming on Peacock this week. Directed by Leigh Whannell, who directed the 2020 remake of Universal's monster movie classic The Invisible Man, Wolf Man opened in theaters on Jan. 17. Julia Garner (Ozark) and Christopher Abbott (Kraven the Hunter) star in Wolf Man as Charlotte and Blake, a couple with a strained marriage who travel with their young daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth) to a remote house in the Oregon mountains that belonged to Blake's late estranged father, Grady (Sam Jaeger). While the family is trying to locate the abode, Blake is clawed by a werewolf and soon begins to physically transform and exhibit attributes and senses that are not human. Before too long, Blake turns into a werewolf himself, which puts Charlotte and Ginger in grave danger. Wolf Man will begin streaming on Peacock on Friday, April 18, according to the streaming service. Peacock offers a pair of streaming package options. Viewers can get an ad-based package for $7.99 per month or $79 per year or an ad-free package for $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year. Universal Studios, of course, produced the original version of The Wolf Man with Lon Chaney Jr., in 1941 and the character or other werewolf interations appeared in several follow-up movies including a the 2010 remake of The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins. The new version of Wolf Man differs though, in the pacing of how Christopher Abbott's Blake transforms into the werewolf and the manner in which it happens. For that reason, Julia Garner told Screen Rant in a January interview, the transformation is what makes the scares more effective. 'It's more scary when it is a slower transition because I still recognized little elements of Chris. His skin and his hair was changing, but he still had his eyes and I think if you want to make anything scarier just go with something familiar,' Garner told Screen Rant. 'That's why they always put dolls in horror films because you see a doll, like, almost every day," Garner added. "So I think that this Wolf Man is almost scarier for that reason — that there's something familiar, that Charlotte still sees her husband, but he's not there anymore.' Wolf Man has earned $20.7 million domestically and $14.1 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $34.6 million against a $25 million production budget before prints and advertising, per Variety. The film received a 50% 'rotten' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 260 reviews and a 56% 'rotten' score based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings from audience members. Rated R, Wolf Man arrives on streaming video on demand on Peacock on Friday.
