Freya Godfrey joins London City Lionesses on permanent deal

Freya Godfrey has made a permanent move to the newly-promoted London City Lionesses following a successful loan spell at the club. Godfrey makes the move from Arsenal, signing a contract until 2028. She will join London City for their first season in the Women's Super League next campaign, following their Championship title win. Godfrey joined Arsenal's academy in 2017 and rose through the ranks before signing her first professional contract in 2023. She subsequently went on loan to Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic to gain minutes and senior experience. Despite training with Arsenal's first team squad on a regular basis, Godfrey only made three senior appearances for the North London side. In January 2025, Godfrey joined Championship side London City Lionesses on loan as the side looked to gain promotion to the Women's Super League. She went on to provide three assists in eight appearances, helping the side to win the Women's Championship. Godfrey's linkup with fellow U23 Lioness Isobel Goodwin was particularly impressive, with Godfrey providing two assists for the young striker against Southampton FC. The Arsenal Academy product will link up with former Gunners defender Teyah Goldie at the Bromley based club, with Goldie also making her loan move permanent earlier this month. A new opportunity for the Young Lioness Upon signing for London City Lionesses, Godfrey said: 'To be honest, I'm just over the moon. I think last season was a great experience for me and it is definitely something I want to continue with, so I am very happy to be back. The last game of last season was the highlight of my career, it was such a tough game, and we fought so hard, and that made the result ten times better. The joy and relief at the end was insane.' London City Lionesses' head coach Jocelyn Prêcheur added: 'I strongly believe in her. Her maturity for such a young player, her talent, her speed and her state of mind she has shown since she arrived convinced me she has everything to become one of the best strikers in England.' The opportunity to get regular senior minutes in the WSL will undoubtedly aid Godfrey's development, as the youngster looks set to be a future star for both club and country. A Toast To The WSL! Alcohol To Be Permitted In Stands At Women's Super League Games

Last Updated: Alcohol will be allowed in the stands at select Women's Super League matches in England during the 2025–26 season, involving seven clubs after a successful pilot. For the first time in decades, alcohol will be allowed in the stands at select professional football matches in England—though only at Women's Super League (WSL) fixtures. The change, part of a controlled trial, will apply to seven top-tier women's clubs during the 2025–26 season. The longstanding ban on drinking alcohol in view of the pitch at men's matches, introduced in 1985 to combat hooliganism and stadium violence, remains firmly in place. However, the women's game—widely regarded as a more family-friendly and inclusive environment—has not been subject to the same restrictions. The WSL announced on Thursday that, starting next season, fans attending home games at Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, London City Lionesses, Manchester City, and Manchester United will be permitted to consume alcohol in the stands. The trial follows a successful pilot last season involving four second-tier clubs from the Women's Championship. Across 19 matches attended by approximately 51,000 fans, the WSL reported overwhelmingly positive feedback. According to the WSL, two-thirds of attendees supported the initiative, and 84% rated their personal safety between 9 and 10 out of 10. 'Players and match officials noted no change to fan behaviour," the WSL said in a statement. 'Average spending on food and beverages increased across these fixtures, and match attendances also rose." The decision reflects the consistently respectful and welcoming environment at women's football matches—markedly different from the historically volatile atmosphere of the men's game. Foul language and crowd disturbances are rare, reinforcing the family-oriented appeal of the women's league. The move also echoes the success of in-seat alcohol sales during the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 tournament, where fans enjoyed a similar experience without incident. The 2025–26 Women's Super League season is set to begin on September 6. (with Reuters inputs) view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. National Rally Championship: Pissay faces setback in Rd 4, still leads C'ships standings

COIMBATORE: Three-time FIM World Champion Aishwarya Pissay, faced a difficult outing at the latest round of the MRF MoGrip FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) 2W 2025, in Coimbatore, retiring from the event due to a technical regulation issue despite being in contention for victory. Heading into the round, Aishwarya had built a strong lead in the Women's Championship and was poised to potentially seal the 2025 title. She was setting the pace through the early stages and had taken a solid lead before being forced to withdraw due to a regulation-related setback with her machine. 'It's never easy to step away from a rally when you're leading, especially one that could have decided the championship. That said, I've always believed motorsport is about how you respond to setbacks. While I couldn't finish today, I'm still leading the overall standings and fully focused on finishing strong in the final round,' said Aishwarya.

World champ Pissay eyes historic 7th National Rally Title at Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: After three consecutive wins, 3-time FIM World Champion Aishwarya Pissay, is gearing up for a potentially historic performance at Round 4 of the MRF MoGrip FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2025 for 2 Wheelers, set to take place in Coimbatore over the weekend. Riding for Petronas TVS Racing, Aishwarya enters this crucial round as the current Women's Championship leader. A victory here would not only extend her unbeaten streak for the season but also put her on track to become the first in Indian motorsport history to win seven National Rally Titles. It would also mark her 12th overall National Title across both rally and road racing — further solidifying her legacy in Indian motorsport. The Rally of Coimbatore presents a formidable challenge, featuring 52.22 km of gravel-heavy competitive stages, spread across a total itinerary of 76.58 km. Known for its unpredictable terrain and technical difficulty, the event will demand precision, endurance, and unwavering focus from all competitors. 'This season has been about pushing every boundary. Coimbatore is a demanding rally with its dirt and gravel terrain, and maintaining focus here is everything. I'm driven to keep this unbeaten streak alive and move one step closer to that 7th national rally title, for my team, my sponsors, and everyone who's supported my journey,' said Aishwarya.
