Local 5 News participates in Women's Build 2025, providing new homes to community
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Instead of cameras and microphones, Local 5 picked up safety glasses and hammers to participate in Habitat for Humanity's 15th annual Women's Build 2025. This yearly summer event empowers women from various backgrounds with the opportunity to give back to the community. Missy Gannon leads return of champions at U.S. Women's Disc Golf Championship in Manitowoc Local 5's Jade Henschel, Lisa Malak and Millaine Wells helped out at the Habitat Homestead, which will soon be home to over a dozen families. Andrea Jorgensen, with Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity, said these homes will make a positive impact on other women. 'The wonderful thing about Women Build is not just the empowerment opportunity to try a new skill,' Jorgensen said. 'It brings awareness to the challenges a lot of women face in our community.' For households that hold single mothers, Jorgensen said it holds more meaning: Kewaunee Public Library hosts preschoolers for educational reading with wooden toy car races 'Owning a home is an emotional moment for a lot of our homeowners, but especially our women-led households,' Jorgensen said. 'They have new opportunities that they can experience with their family.' These local initiatives shed light on the ongoing need for affordable housing in the Green Bay Community. Volunteers refurbish Elmira homes for Habitat for Humanity
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — A group of female volunteers dedicated their day in the Chemung County Habitat for Humanity Women Build event to assist in refurbishing two homes in Elmira. More than 50 volunteers worked on two, two-story homes to deconstruct parts of the properties and add in essentials. As shown in the images above, volunteers at a home on Norton Street participated in various improvement tasks, including removing an old shed and a front porch. They also weeded the backyard, spread topsoil, and planted grass seeds. At another on Standish Street, volunteers installed electrical wiring by drilling holes for the studs. Additionally, they laid stones to create a foundation for a driveway, which they leveled with through raking. A couple of people described the experience as a joy to get involved in doing physical labor and adapting new skills from their work on the homes. 'It's a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together to rehave homes in the area of Elmira and to renovate this house for a new family,' Giselle Sherman said. 'I definitely learned how to take down studs and all of those types of things. And then we actually built this lovely driveway that we're standing on today. So those were two things that I've never done myself before,' said Alyssa Ryan. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity hosts annual Women Build
JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The 2025 Habitat for Humanity Women Build provided a unique opportunity: houses built by women, for women. On Friday, women of Jackson and Washington counties came together to work on two houses for first-time female homeowners. The homes are part of Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity's new subdivision. It's the organization's first subdivision in Marianna in over 30 years. 'There's a shortage of housing of any kind. And so while we can't fix the entire problem, we can help move a few families forward and give them a decent place to live and help them have safe and affordable housing for the long term,' Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Kevin Yoder said. City of DeFuniak Springs announce new dates for LakeFest 2025 Women's Build volunteers are working on Chipola Habitats' 107th and 108th homes. Dozens of community members are serving alongside the future homeowner families to help make it a reality. 'It shows us that we do have other people out in the community that's willing to help us become the homeowners that we're soon to be,' future homeowner Lekeria Williams said. Groups from the panhandle and beyond take part in the event. 'It's really amazing to see the expansion of the impact beyond Alabama. So, to be able to come to these other states to be able to bring these homes to other communities is really valuable,' Auburn University Rural Studio Assistant Research Professor Mackenzie Stagg said. The annual Women Build event is meaningful to all involved. 'It is good to have a new beginning, something to offer for our family and our kids. To be a part of it from day one to see it built from the ground up is pretty exciting,' future homeowner Keshia Williams added. 'Chipola habitat is something big for this community. It's a blessing for some families here. And also, I think this has helped the community all get together, bind together,' Florida Public Utilities Marianna Manager of Electric Operations, Rhondon Gray said. The land for the Gillis Ridge seven-home subdivision was donated to Habitat back in the early 2000s. Around 2020, the local chapter received a low-interest loan from Habitat for Humanity International, partnership money from the city of Marianna, and donations from individuals and businesses to pay for the project. The first home is expected to be completed later this year. If you're interested in volunteering with Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
