Pedro Pascal Reveals He Was ‘Appalled' By His Clean-Shaven Look In This Film

Last Updated: Pedro Pascal revealed that while portraying the villainous Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984, he had to go fully clean-shaven. Pedro Pascal exudes a rugged charm with his swoon-worthy looks and warm presence. The Materialists star's tousled hairstyle and salt-and-pepper beard have captured the heart of the audiences. Pascal has long rocked facial hair throughout his career, but there was one role that required him to appear clean-shaved. Pedro Pascal Chooses Beard Over Clean Shave During a fun interview with LADbible, Pedro Pascal, along with his Fantastic Four co-star Vanessa Kirby, was seen taking part in a debate about which is sexier: moustaches or beards. Pascal chose moustaches, and revealed that he had to go fully clean-shaven whole portraying the villainous Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984. 'I grow such s**t facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very awful," Pascal said, strongly disagreeing with the idea of clean shaving. 'I was appalled by the way I looked in Wonder Woman 1984. I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I have never gone back unless it was completely necessary," he added. Pedro Pascal's Look in Fantastic Four Talking about if the makers of Fantastic Four would have asked him to go clean-shaven, Pascal replied, 'If they insisted, I would've done it. But it was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie." In the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Pascal was seen rocking his signature moustache as Reed Richards, or Mr. Fantastic, a choice that sparked controversy among the fans. Many Marvel enthusiasts pointed out Reed's clean-shaven look in the comic books and claimed that Pascal was not the right fit for the role. Previously during an interview with Variety, Pascal was seen opening up about the backlash and admitted that it was difficult to avoid fan complaints when he was cast and he constantly heard, 'He's too old. He's not right. He needs to shave," Pascal revealed. About Fantastic Four Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the second reboot of the Fantastic Four film series. Other prominent actors in this film include Julia Garner, Sarah Niles, Mark Gatiss, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ralph Ineson. The film is set to hit the theatres on July 25, 2025. When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Pedro Pascal will go through a lot for a role. He'll get beaten to death with a golf club, he'll get his eyes gouged out in trial by combat, but he won't go clean-shaven. Not after Wonder Woman 1984, at least. "I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very… Strongly disagree with a clean-shaven me," Pascal said in a new interview with LADbible. One role that involved being clean-shaven, however, was Maxwell "Max Lord" Lorenzano in the DCEU's Wonder Woman sequel, which was released in 2020. Max is a businessman who uses an artifact known as the Dreamstone to save his failing oil company and wreak havoc on the world. The character sports an '80s mop of blond hair, and a completely smooth face. "I was so appalled by the way I looked," he continued. "I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back unless it were completely necessary. If they asked me to be clean-shaven for Fantastic Four, and if they had insisted, I would've done it. But it was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie." Now, of course, the DCEU is dead and James Gunn's rebooted DCU Chapter One has kicked off on the big screen with Superman (in which Sean Gunn briefly appears as Maxwell Lord). And Pascal has swapped DC for Marvel, playing Reed Richards, AKA Mister Fantastic, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps alongside Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in UK cinemas on July 24 and US theaters on July 25. Pedro Pascal will not shave for a role unless it's ‘completely necessary'

Pedro Pascal expressed strong dislike for his clean-shaven appearance as villain Maxwell Lord in the 2020 film Wonder Woman 1984. The actor stated he was 'appalled' by his look in the DC Comics movie and has since vowed not to shave his facial hair unless absolutely essential. Pascal's portrayal of Reed Richards with a mustache in the upcoming Fantastic Four film has drawn mild criticism from some superhero purists. Lindy Hemming, costume designer for Wonder Woman 1984, revealed that Pascal's character's look was partly inspired by Donald Trump's 1980s persona. Director Patty Jenkins confirmed Trump was one of several inspirations for the character, emphasizing that the influence was not intended to be political.

Pedro Pascal: ‘I Was So Appalled by the Way I Look' in ‘Wonder Woman 1984' That ‘I've Never Gone Back' to Being Clean Shaven for an Acting Role

Pedro Pascal faced off against his 'Fantastic Four' co-star Vanessa Kirby during LADbible's 'Agree to Disagree' video series, in which they were asked to debate which is sexier: Mustaches or beards? Pascal has long rocked facial hair throughout his career, but there was one role that required him to go clean shaven. That would be the villainous Maxwell Lord in 'Wonder Woman 1984,' Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot's superhero sequel that released in theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on Christmas Day 2020. 'I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very [awful]. Strongly disagree with a clean shaven me,' Pascal said. 'I was so appalled by the way I look in 'Wonder Woman 1984.' I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back. Unless it were completely necessary. Pascal, who is no stranger to franchise fare thanks to 'The Last of Us' and 'The Mandalorian,' previously told Vanity Fair that it was hard to avoid fan complaints when he was cast and he constantly heard: 'He's too old. As for Maxwell Lord, the 'Wonder Woman 1984' role was a one and done stop for Pascal in the previous DC Universe. He's now playing a major role in the MCU and is already confirmed to be returning as Reed in next year's tentpole 'Avengers: Doomsday.' Marvel's 'Fantastic Four' opens in theaters July 25. Pedro Pascal Was "So Appalled" by the Way He Looked in WONDER WOMAN 1984 That He Hasn't Shaved for a Role Since — GeekTyrant

Fans were disappointed with the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 , as it didn't live up to the first film's story. But it turns out that one of its stars was disappointed as well, but more with the look of his character than anything else. Pedro Pascal's star was just beginning its major ascent when this movie came out, and fans were taking notice, but if you look back, you might see that Pascal has made the choice to have facial hair in his roles since this film, and that's because the actor absolutely hated the way he looked in this movie. In a recent interview with his Fantastic Four co-star, Vanessa Kirby, during LADbible's 'Agree to Disagree' video series, the pair were asked to debate which is sexier: Mustaches or beards? Pascal responded to the question, saying: 'I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very [awful]. Strongly disagree with a clean shaven me. I was so appalled by the way I look in 'Wonder Woman 1984.' 'I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back unless it were completely necessary. If they asked me to be clean shave for 'Fantastic Four' and insisted then I would've done it. But it was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie.' Pascal wears a mustache as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole, a choice that has sparked a bit of backlash amongst superhero obsessives who are committed to the clean-shaven Reed from the comic books. Pascal, who is no stranger to franchise work thanks to The Last of Us and The Mandalorian , previously told Vanity Fair that it was hard to avoid fan complaints when he was cast and he constantly heard: 'He's too old. He's not right. He needs to shave. I'm more aware of disgruntlement around my casting than anything I've ever done,' Pascal said. I think anyone complaining about his casting just needs to wait and see what he does with the role. Pascal is so endearing and talented, I can't imagine his mustache will stand in the way of his fantastic portrayal. The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25th. via: Variety
