Dogs and cats get allergies too – here's how you can help them
About five years ago, Gail Friedman noticed her Parson Russell Terrier was constantly licking his paws and seemed super uncomfortable. "The poor dog. I would put baby socks on his feet so that he wouldn't lick them or bite at them,' said Friedman, of Oak Brook, Illinois. "I was constantly changing the socks, washing his feet a lot. Nothing worked.' It turned out her canine companion, Mr Friedman, had allergies. It's a common and tricky problem in pets – caused by various things such as pollen, dust, mold, chemicals and food – but veterinarians say there are several ways to ease their suffering. Allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to a foreign substance. Cats and dogs react to many of the same things people do, as well as pests like fleas. There are no definitive recent statistics on how many pets have allergies, but research suggests the problem is growing. "I probably see allergic dogs and cats every single day, probably multiple times a day,' said Dr Karen Woodard, medical director at Thrive Pet Healthcare-Elmhurst in Illinois. About 90% of allergic pets react to environmental triggers, Woodard said, and the rest have food allergies only. Dog breeds that are especially vulnerable include various types of terriers, boxers and bulldogs; in cats, it's Persians, Siamese and Himalayans. Pets can even be allergic to other animals – cats to dogs, dogs to cats and either to another species. "It's possible for them to be allergic to us, just like we are to them,' said Thrive's Dr. Anthea Elliott Schick of Scottsdale, Arizona, immediate past president of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. More often, they scratch and lick themselves, shake their heads and develop ear infections. Woodard said her Yorkie mix, Teddy, had the classic signs – scratching around his shoulders and getting rashes and ear infections starting as a six-month-old lived in the South at the time, and he tested positive for allergies to various trees and grasses there. A common sign of allergies in her feline patients is "overdoing their grooming,' said Woodard, who's on the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association's board of directors."Cats shouldn't be pulling their hair out when they groom. So if you start seeing bald patches on your cat, even though the skin underneath it looks normal, that could be a sign of allergies.' Even food allergies, often to chicken, beef, lamb or other protein sources, frequently show up on the skin, although pets can have vomiting or diarrhoea, too. Rarely, pets can develop life-threatening anaphylactic reactions, perhaps after being stung by an insect. But most allergies are simply miserable for the animals. "It breaks my heart because it gets to a point that not only do I have socks on poor Mr Friedman – which is humiliating for him – he sometimes gets so bad he has to wear the cone of shame,' Gail Friedman said. "And that's not fair because he can't move around right, he can't sleep right. It's terrible.' Get help The first step is to get a diagnosis from the vet. This could involve allergy testing, or in the case of food allergies, an "elimination diet,' which involves feeding limited ingredients the pet hasn't previously eaten. If the allergy culprit is environmental, there are medications like anti-inflammatory drugs and newer oral and injectable medications for dogs to block chemical signals associated with allergies may be treated with special diets such as "hydrolysed' food, in which proteins are chemically broken down into tiny pieces. All this can get expensive. Friedman estimates she's spent about $10,000 (RM42,495) on testing, medication and care for Mr Friedman and another allergic dog. But vets say there are also ways to help pets at home by cleaning their bedding frequently, wiping their fur with a wet washcloth and giving them baths. Outdoors, "they're almost acting like little Swiffers, getting allergens on their skin, and it goes through their skin and actually becomes a problem,' Schick said."We say bathe your dog, at a minimum, once a week if they're allergic.' After she's tried nearly everything, Friedman's dogs are still vexed by allergies. But they're doing better. "I'm going to keep experimenting until we find what stops it completely,' she said. "All you can do is try.' – By LAURA UNGAR/AP

Trailblazing Harlem Globetrotter Lynette Woodard says she never saw a penny from merch sold in her name
A gold medal-winning Olympian and historic Harlem Globetrotter claims she's been dunked on by an NYC business that sold pricey hoodies and sweatsuits in her name — and cut her out of the profits. Hall of Famer Lynette Woodard, who became the first woman to play for the famed Globetrotters in 1985, said in a lawsuit that no one got her permission to slap her name on $150 hoodies and $100 sweats peddled by a company called Undrcrwn. The Globetrotters and the company 'never sought [Woodard's] consent because they knew [she] would not give it for free,' she said in the Manhattan Federal Court lawsuit. Mundelein looking to add to outdoor art exhibits; ‘Public art expressions … give communities a stronger sense of place and identity'
Chris Woodard is fascinated by the customs of the Mexican holiday DÍa de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. As an artist, she's often inspired by its symbols, and some of her work entails making sugar skulls out of wood. As a member of the Mundelein Arts Commission (MAC) and a liaison of the village's Beautification Committee, the retired teacher said she's excited about the two groups' most recent project, which is jointly sponsored by local flower shop Flowerama. Walk through downtown Mundelein and you'll no doubt bump into stars; Fiberglass stars, that is. The star-shaped sculptures are a 3D version of the village's logo. The public art campaign, titled 'Stars on Parade' and launched in 2020, featured 15 stars that artists were commissioned to decorate in various themes that included titles such as 'Starry Night,' 'Birds of Lake County' and 'Mundy Proud.' It was the brainchild of MAC board member Gail Smith, Woodard said. Smith was influenced by other sculpture initiatives, such as Chicago's 'Cows on Parade.' Now, the committee is looking for artists who can render their visions for the latest star installment. The theme 'Marigolds, Monarchs and Mexican Heritage' comes from the connection between the culture's reverence for the flower and the butterfly, which makes a multi-generational, two-way migration each year between the U.S. and Mexico, Woodard said. Those interested in throwing their hat in the ring for the opportunity are asked to apply through the website and upload a sketch of their concept no later than 5 p.m. on June 30. The selected artist will have two months to complete the work and be paid $500 in two equal installments, at delivery and when completed, respectively. Artists applying don't have to be residents of Mundelein, Woodard said, but any connection to the village is taken into consideration, along with the artist's alignment with the MAC's chosen theme. The new sculpture is scheduled to be placed by the pollinator garden at Commons Courtland Park and be unveiled by the fall to coincide with village events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, according to Colleen Malec, village senior planner and liaison to the commission. 'We are always looking for opportunities to celebrate Mundelein's Hispanic and Latino community,' Malec said. 'It's a way of embracing and recognizing the people who live here and showcase that we're a diverse community.' According to the latest U.S. Census data, 36.5% of Mundelein residents are Hispanic. Malec said the public-art effort has been successful in its effort to create a buzz, so much so that some local businesses have sponsored their own star sculptures to have them placed by their locations. They've become sort of landmarks, she said. One such star sits outside the doors of Bill's Pizza and Pub on Lake Street. 'People like to take pictures [of themselves] with it,' said restaurant manager Julio Pacheco. Created by artist Tammie Trahan, the sculpture's title is 'Fish of the Midwest' and shows a three-dimensional fish atop the star ripping through the water, reaching to bite a lure that comically holds a tiny pizza slice. 'You really can get creative with these sculptures,' Woodard said. 'It's a shot to make your mark in the community.' The fiberglass stars are purchased from Chicago-based Chicago Fiberglass Works, Malec said. Once the blank matte fiberglass star is decorated by the artist, the village takes the transformed sculpture to an automotive body shop that finishes it with a shiny topcoat to be UV-and-graffiti-resistant. Malec said the sculptures are a point of pride for the village. MAC members are active year-round with the goal to make the community a beautiful place, welcoming to residents, businesses and visitors. Woodard said all you have to do is walk through the downtown area to see examples of those efforts, through murals and other sculptures. The group is a 10-member committee chosen by the mayor. It meets monthly, and practices and encourages the arts of all sorts, officials said. According to Americans for the Arts, communities gain value through public art in a variety of ways. The Public Art Network Council's website states, 'Places with strong public art expressions break the trend of blandness and sameness, and give communities a stronger sense of place and identity.'
