[UPDATED] MACC to charge Works Department director in graft case

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is set to charge a Works Department director tomorrow over alleged bribery involving hundreds of thousands of ringgit. MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said today that the case was investigated by the commission's Special Operations Division and is now complete. "We expect to charge the director tomorrow at the Special Corruption Sessions Court in Jalan Duta," he said at MACC Headquarters. As part of the investigation, the MACC has frozen 95 bank accounts, comprising 79 belonging to individuals and 16 linked to companies, with a total value of RM613 million. The commission has also seized properties, vehicles, and cash believed to be connected to the case. In May, the MACC remanded six individuals, including two senior civil servants with the title 'Datuk' and an engineer from a government department, for allegedly receiving bribes in connection with development and maintenance contract awards since 2021. According to a source, initial investigations revealed that the two main suspects, who hold the positions of director and engineer at a government department, had received approximately RM115,000 from middlemen in the form of cash, home renovation payments, and mobile phones.

Odisha CM urges newly recruited Government employees to uphold integrity

Bhubaneswar, June 16 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday urged newly recruited government employees to work with determination, remain above corruption, and ensure the effective implementation of all government welfare programmes. Addressing a recruitment fair organized to fill 964 posts across five government departments, Majhi emphasised the government's commitment to harnessing the energy, potential, and enthusiasm of the youth for the state's development and welfare. At the recruitment fair, appointments were made to 563 posts in the Works Department, 62 in the Water Resources Department, 117 in the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, 204 in the Housing and Urban Development Department, and 18 in the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department. The posts included Junior Engineer, Junior Enforcement Officer, Tracer, Legal Metrology Inspector, and Junior Accountant. Congratulating the newly appointed employees, the Chief Minister expressed hope that they would serve with dedication, address public concerns, and strive to meet the aspirations of the people, considering themselves as true public servants. He noted that since the new government assumed office, significant employment opportunities have been created in both government and private sectors — a stark contrast to the slow pace of the past few years. 'The government has set a target to fill 1.5 lakh government posts over the next five years. So far, 28,346 government jobs have been provided, which is a historic achievement for us,' Majhi said. He further stated that, beyond the public sector, 45,000 youths have also been employed in the private sector in the government's first year in office. Referring to the state's flagship initiative, the Chief Minister said, 'Under Utkarsha Odisha 2025, 12.90 lakh employment opportunities have been generated across 16 sectors with an investment of Rs.17 lakh crore. In the past five months alone, 56 industrial units have either been inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid, creating 1.10 lakh job opportunities.' On this occasion, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krishnachandra Patra, Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr. Krishnachandra Mahapatra, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Ravi Narayan, and Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan also congratulated and welcomed the new recruits. Premier urges more Sarawak contractors to register as facility management providers

Speaking at the launch of International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday, he said the move is part of the state's holistic sustainability strategy. 'Sustainability does not end when the last brick is laid. It must continue throughout a building's life cycle. 'This is why the Sarawak government is championing professional facility management to ensure safety, efficiency, and longevity of our assets,' he said. Abang Johari noted that over 4,000 government quarters have already been built in Sarawak, with 3,000 more underway, making effective FM crucial. 'Currently, out of over 468 FM contractors in Malaysia, only 17 are registered in Sarawak. That is far from adequate,' he said. He said Works Department (JKR) Sarawak pioneered its first official FM contract in 2024 for the Borneo Cultures Museum, which will set a benchmark for future FM contracts under RMK-13. These include the State Legislative Assembly Complex, Integrated Administrative Centres in Bintulu, Limbang, and Lawas, as well as Federal Gunasama Quarters in Bintulu. He also welcomed CIDB's initiative to organise a dedicated FM seminar and training as a follow-up to ICW Borneo. 'We want to develop what we call gunasama (shared use), where we will build housing for our officers in a sort of gated community. 'For example, it will be used by both state and federal officers. We have many doctors in the districts. We have to provide good quarters for the doctors,' Abang Johari added. He said the quarters would include condominiums or apartments with all the basic facilities.
