Madrid Archery World Cup: Jyothi Surekha Vennam finishes 2nd in individual event, wins three medals overall
A week that started with Jyothi Surekha Vennam setting a new World Record in mixed team along with Rishabh Yadav, finished with her standing on the podium in all three possible events she could medal in at the fourth stage of the 2025 Archery World Cup being held in Madrid. Earlier in the day, the supremely consistent women's compound team won silver. Then Jyothi shot to silver in the women's compound individual event, losing a super close final against Great Britain's Ella Gibson 148-147. The trio of Jyothi, Parneet Kaur and 16-year-old debutant Prithika Pradeep, who had topped the qualification round with a total of 2116 points, looked well on course for gold and justify their top-billing when they led 170-169 after the third end. However, they eventually went down 225-227 to Chinese Taipei, a 7 by Parneet in the fourth end proving very costly in the final equation. In the mixed team event, Rishabh and Jyothi – who lost to eventual champions Netherlands in the semifinals – beat 10th-seeded El Salvador duo of Paola Corado and Douglas Vladimir Nolasco 156-153 to claim bronze. On Friday, they to 12th-seeded Netherlands 152-155. In the bronze playoff, the scores were tied 39-39 after the first end, but Jyothi and Rishabh pulled ahead by two points after the second and maintained their lead till the end to seal victory. In the qualification round, Jyothi and Rishabh's combined score of 1431 was the 144-arrow mixed team world record. Rishabh topped the men's qualification charts with 716 while Jyothi did the same in the women's section with a score of 715. Rishabh, according to World Archery, led the men's compound qualification round from start to finish at Vallehermoso Stadium and could have challenged the individual record too, currently held by Braden Gellenthien (718) but finished on 716, which is a new personal best and his highest score on the international circuit. Jyothi and Rishabh's combined 1431 beat the previous mixed team world record of 1429, held by Denmark's Tanja Gellenthien and Mathias Fullerton since the Krakow-Malopolska 2023 European Games. It is another encouraging early sign for India for LA 2028, with compound mixed team event added to the Olympic Games roster. 'It's special because the [compound] mixed team is newly added to the Olympics, and we've been having such small achievements over time,' Rishabh, who also won mixed team gold with Jyothi at the season opener in Central Florida, had told World Archery. 'We didn't shoot mixed team together at the last two stages, but now we're back – and we both shot well. It's interesting and we're happy with the consistency we have together.' (With PTI inputs)

Archery WC: Jyothi, Parneet enter compound women SF; Rishabh, Aman bow out in second round
India's Jyothi Surekha Vennom and Parneet Kaur booked their spots in the compound women's semifinal at the fourth stage of the Archery World Cup of the season. Jyothi, who topped the qualification round, defeated the Turkish archer Hazal Burun 147-144 in the quarterfinal to set up a final-four meet with Korea's Han Seungyeon. Meanwhile, Parneet made it to her maiden World Cup semifinal after beating Oznur Cure Girdi of Turkey by 142-141. Parneet, a 2023 Asian Champion, had never medalled individually outside the continent and missed out on selection for the first three stages of this year's World Cup circuit – in Florida, Shanghai and Antalya. She was just two points off her personal best of 704 with 702 points in the 72-arrow qualification round on Tuesday and now stands two matches away from her first World Cup podium. 'For me, to make some three steps that I want to focus on during my shot. And when I'm not shooting and sitting behind (the line), she told me to do a bit of calligraphy or draw something. That's improved my focus pretty well," Parneet told World Archery. Kaur faces reigning European Champion Gibson in the semifinal, with a potential final (or bronze final) against either Asian Games Champion and teammate Jyothi or Antalya runner-up Han Seungyeon. In the men's individual event, top-seeded Rishabh Yadav, Aman Saini, Priyansh all bowed out in the second round, while Prathamesh Bhalchandra Fuge crashed out in the opening round. In recurve archery, men's and women's teams had a disappointing exit in their opening round. The women's trio of Ankita Bhakat, Deepika Kumari and 15-year-old debutant Gatha Khadake, who opened their campaign from the second round due to their fourth seeding, lost 3-5 to France. The men's trio of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Rahul Singh and Neeraj Chauhan suffered 2-6 loss to Brazil.

The event saw an increased number of participants compared to previous World Cup stages. "The rhythm kicks in and you just keep going with the flow until the last ten hits," Yadav said. "There are people around you are saying, 'You need to do it like this, stay calm,' I'm like, 'OK, I know what I'm doing.'" But today, since the morning practice I felt really, really good with the way I was shooting, and I just wanted to shoot the same way in the qualification." Kisik Lee replaces Baek Woong Ki as India's new recurve archery head coach
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): Republic of Korea's Kisik Lee is set to be the new head coach of India's national recurve archery team as part of the team's preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The South Korean will be replacing his compatriot Baek Woong Ki, who stepped down from the role of India's recurve archery coach after being denied accreditation for the Paris Olympics 2024, as per The 67-year-old Kisik Lee is expected to assume his role as the new head coach of the Indian recurve archery team in August or September. He will work across senior and junior recurve setups, with an eye on ending India's search for an Olympic medal in archery at LA 2028. Despite being a regular fixture in archery competitions at the Olympics, Indian archers are yet to get a feel of the podium at the Summer Games. Kisik Lee is expected to operate between New Delhi and the regional training centre in Sonepat. The final contract, however, is yet to be signed. 'My job is to train the athletes and the coaches - and the archers show good results in the process,' Kisik Lee, who was named Coach of the Year by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee in 2019, told World Archery as quoted by 'All his demands have been accepted. He will have full freedom to execute his plans,' said Archery Association of India (AAI) treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril. Kisik Lee boasts a rich coaching resume with experience of mentoring top archers for over three decades. After starting his international coaching career with the South Korean team, he guided Australian archers to two Olympic medals - Simon Fairweather's gold at Sydney 2000 and Tim Cuddihy's bronze at Athens 2004. The Korean also enjoyed substantial success as the head coach of the USA recurve archery team between 2006 and 2024. During his tenure, the American archers won over 300 World Cup medals - almost half of them gold - three Olympic medals and multiple world titles across disciplines. Lee notably shaped five-time Olympic medallist and 2019 recurve world champion Brady Ellison's rise into one of the sport's most accomplished archers. (ANI)
