Blood donation is a noble act, as it can save multiple lives. But before going to the donation centre, you need to be well-informed about the essentials, who can donate, the key eligibility criteria, and the precautions to take before and after donation. Moreover, haemoglobin levels play a major role in determining eligibility, so if you intend to donate regularly, you may have to improve them through proper nutrition. On World Blood Donation Day, which is annually observed on June 14, let's take a moment to know how you can safely and effectively contribute to this life-saving cause. Dr Shruti Kamdi, Consultant Lab Medicine Blood Transfusion, Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, Mumbai, shared with HT Lifestyle, a comprehensive guide, outlining all the key essentials, from blood donation precautions to nutrition tips to improve haemoglobin levels: Since maintaining healthy haemoglobin is a key requirement for blood donation, it's important to keep your levels in check. Check haemoglobin, serum ferritin, B12, and folate with a blood test every few months if you're trying to correct a deficiency. Here are the foods: Haemoglobin is made using iron, so include both heme and non-heme iron sources: Vitamin C helps absorb non-heme iron better. Tip: Add lemon juice to spinach or lentil dishes. These are needed for red blood cell production. Eritrea: Effective Achievements in Ensuring Blood Supply
Mr. Bereket Mosazgi, secretary of the National Voluntary Blood Donors Association, reported that significant achievements have been registered in ensuring a consistent blood supply to health facilities through voluntary blood donation. Mr. Bereket made the comment in connection with World Blood Donation Day, 14 June. Noting that the annual blood demand of the National Blood Transfusion Service ranges from 12,000 to 15,000 units, Mr. Bereket stated that voluntary blood donations, which were fewer than 10,000 units in 2019, surpassed 16,000 units in 2024. This, he said, reflects the growing public awareness. Mr. Bereket noted that the main objective of the association is to ensure a sustainable blood supply to health facilities. He stated that the association is expanding its network, improving its systems, and working closely with partners to meet its goals. He also mentioned that the number of active members has reached 12,000 and that 67 institutions regularly donate blood voluntarily, in addition to numerous individuals and group donors. World Blood Donation Day, 14 June, will be observed under the theme 'Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives', featuring various programs highlighting the importance of the day. Ukku agitators to donate blood to save VSP from privatisation
Visakhapatnam: Every employee should donate blood to protect Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) from getting privatised on June 14, called out Steel CITU honorary president J Ayodhya Ramu. Unveiling a poster for the blood donation camp here on Friday, Ayodhya Ramu mentioned that for the past 1,600 days, trade unions have been fighting against the 100 percent strategic sale of the VSP and appealing the Centre to change its decision on it. But the government is taking steps to privatise the plant, taking the lives of the workers for granted, he pointed out. It is time for the working class to unite and donate their blood and bring their prob-lems to the attention of the Central government, he mentioned that the recent financial package of Rs.11,440 crore given by the Centre was just an eye wash. The Steel CITU honorary president appealed to the employees and workers to participate in the blood donation camp and extend support to the agitation. Speaking on the occasion, blood donation camp organiser B Apparao explained, 'Through blood donation camps made in the past seven years, we have been able to meet the blood needs of several pa-tients.' He informed that the camp will be organised at Ambedkar Kalakshetram, Ukkunagaram (CWC-1) on the occasion of the World Blood Donation Day on June 14. Steel CITU president YT Das stated that steel workers have already been recognised for donating blood several times. Steel CITU leaders P Srinivasa Raju, K Gangadhar, V Prasad, VDV Poornachandra Rao, Srinivas and Suribabu were present.
