World Naked Bike Ride: ‘Indecent Exposure' To Car Pollution?
Nude cyclists ride along The Mall during the World Naked Bike Ride in London. Celebrating its 20th year and throughout the summer, the World Naked Bike Ride has stark-nude cyclists cruising city streets around the world – in as many as 80 across 20 countries, from Sidney, Australia, to Guadalajara, Mexico and from Portland, Oregon, to London, England. Letting everything hang loose (or just partially loose) -- as the slogan of the global event advises to be 'as bare as you dare' -- the naked bike ride is a peaceful part protest, part celebration advocating for cyclists' rights, the end of the world's oil dependency and a curb on car culture and pollution. 'It's time to put a stop to the indecent exposure of people and the planet to cars and the pollution they create,' explains the ride's website. Naked Bike Ride To Show Cyclists' Vulnerability Although each city decides its cause, the general aim of the World Naked Bike Ride is to stress the planet's continuing reliance on fossil fuels and to demand measures against car culture, obtain genuine rights for cyclists by demonstrating their vulnerability on roads and city streets and to celebrate body freedom. Another overarching aim is to promote cycling as a clean and safe means of transportation versus motorized vehicles and their negative impact on the environment. The history of the 'cyclonudist' ride is not totally clear. It seems that the first naked bike event occurred in Zaragoza, Spain, in 2001. Then, in 2003, the Canadian social activist Conrad Schmidt reportedly organized Naked Bike Rides for artists to protest against war and oil dependency and to celebrate the power and individuality of the human body. The World's Largest Naked Event In 2006, there was a shift towards simplifying the message and focusing on cycling advocacy. Since then, the ride has expanded to cities across the globe to become the world's largest naked event in history to promote cycling. The cyclo-nudist ride is free to enter and while full nudity is optional, as the name indicates the idea is to wear as little as possible. Some riders cycle in their underwear or in swimsuits due to personal modesty or chafing. Others bear slogans including 'Energy Is Renude,' 'Burn Fat Not Oil,' and 'Less Gas, More Ass' painted on various parts of their bodies. Meanwhile, some choose to flaunt costumes, flowers or other decorations. Superhero capes, extravagant headgear and glitter are also popular. The most common outfit is simply a helmet and socks. The goal is 'to feel comfortable and confident in whatever level of dress (or undress) feels right.' Based on the official dress code 'be as bare as you dare,' the organizers explain: 'How bare is that? How dare is that? It's all up to you. You decide what you are comfortable with. No one is excluded or discriminated against based on levels of clothing, body paint, or anything else for that matter!' The ride is 'perfectly legal' in all cities where it occurs, according to Time Out London, arguing that 'getting naked in public is only an offence if someone exposes their private parts with the intent to cause alarm or distress.' For 20 years London has have one of the biggest World Naked Bike Rides, with eight start locations ... More and different start times and distances. Naked Bike Ride, A Controversial Issue Nevertheless, over the years the event has not been spared from controversy – most recently in the United States, where a number of cities hold Naked Bike Rides at this time of the year. In 2024, a girl in Madison, Wisconsin, participated in the event with her mother, provoking severe criticism particularly from Wisconsin Republican politicians who tried to ban the event this year. These efforts, including requests for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate and two GOP-authored bills, didn't pan out and the ride and the girl were back this year. In the past, there have been police interventions and arrests. The organizer of the event in Auckland, New Zealand, Simon Oosterman, was arrested during the first event in 2005. He's credited with the effort to refocus the aim of the ride toward moving away from fossil fuel dependency in the context of climate change, and the idea of 'stop the indecent exposure to vehicle emissions.' In France, a number of cities prohibit the event under an article of the penal code that equates nudity with sexual exhibition on public roads. Elsewhere in the U.S., riders have been arrested for 'indecent exposure and lewdness' in North Conway, New Hampshire, in Chicago and in Bellingham, Washington. In 2007, during the first World Naked Bike ride in Denver, Colorado, police surrounded the bike riders and issued multiple tickets. 'Does anyone else's city have a naked bike ride?" wrote a distressed passerby in one city taken by surprise. "I was quite shocked to find out this existed and is somehow legal…Or at least, police doing nothing about it.' In general, parental guidance is advised in the cities where the ride takes place every year to ensure that its intent is understood and well received. Yet, the Naked Bike Ride also has many fans, as noted by Time Out London: 'Apart from prudes, stiffs, codgers and devotees of the late Mary Whitehouse, literally everyone loves the World Naked Bike Ride. So much so, that it's sort of a shame that it only happens once a year.' Cyclists participate in the Naked Bike Ride in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Photo by Pablo Porciuncula. ... 'I go to my local pub naked - the experience is liberating'
A naturist has revealed how he attends his local pub naked - and says the experience is "liberating". Colin Unsworth, 55, says he has gone completely nude to his closest watering hole alongside his partner Sadie Tann, 35, for some of his favourite musicians since 2022. The wild foraging teacher, who is from Adlington, has been a naturist for over a decade, first getting involved aged 42 with the sponsored World Naked Bike Ride in Manchester in 2012. Colin said that he strips down to spread the message of body positivity and also raise awareness for mental health. Though he says he received some backlash from strangers he has revealed "most of the time" he is met with "positivity" and "admiration" for being "comfortable" in his own skin. He said: "We strip down in the car and go inside without clothes on. "There are four pubs we go to and we had to build up relationships with the owners and staff to let us do it. Colin and Sadie regularly visit their local pub in the nude. (Image: Colin Unsworth/SWNS) "At the shows people always ask questions saying I must be 'super confident' but mainly I accept and am comfortable in my own skin. "Body shame has done a lot of damage to people - modern society holds a moral shame over a naked body but that should never be the case. "I don't do it for attention, I do it to spread the word of body positivity." Naturism is the act of going outside without clothes on in a non-sexual manner, which is legal in the UK even if it causes offense. Though it can be seen as illegal if the person is acting in a way which causes harassment, alarm, or distress to others. Colin says that throughout his childhood he was "hypersensitive" to touch and didn't like the feeling of clothes on his body. He says this continued into his adult life but it wasn't until he parted from his wife of 20 years he decided to step into the world of naturism which started with him going wild shrubbing in just an apron. They arrive at the venue nude saying it saves the "awkwardness" of being clothed and then getting undressed. He has told he had to spend time getting to know the owners and staff before he was allowed inside nude. Colin said: "It took time before we were able to. "We only did it when the owner agreed to it." He says after entering for the first couple of minutes he feels "exposed" but after buying a drink and having a few conversations it becomes "normal". Colin said: "All conversations happen with eye contact and after a few minutes you forget you are naked. "When the music starts playing we feel vibrant and free and also feel accepted. "People at the gig also tell us that it is better for their experience, they feel part of something that is liberating even if they themselves aren't naked. "In a normal sense we are just there to enjoy the evening and music just like everybody else, making sure we are having a good time. Naturist couple Colin and Sadie, in clothes. (Image: Colin Unsworth/SWNS) "It seems to add a positive vibe to pub - you find people often talk about it long after the occasion." The naturist also says that he rarely runs into issues with people once inside. Colin said: "People come up to us all the time and ask us questions. "We find ourselves talking about body acceptance and positivity and most of the time they find themselves coming to terms with their own bodies after our conversations. "People often say that they feel that we've made them feel that they can also be accepted as themselves." Though he says when they do get abuse they "shrug it off" and continue saying they "aren't doing anything wrong". But for Colin he says the angry words are a result of him challenging the narrative and spreading body positivity which is his main goal.

What is Naturism? Naturism, also known as nudism, is a cultural and lifestyle movement that advocates for and practices social nudity in both private and public spaces. The philosophy behind naturism emphasises harmony with nature, self-respect, respect for others, and a sense of community. Naturism is a diverse and inclusive lifestyle choice that encourages individuals to embrace their natural state, foster a deeper connection with nature, and build a community based on mutual respect and equality. Naturists believe that naturism promotes a healthy and accepting attitude toward the human body, regardless of shape, size, or imperfections. Many naturists are also advocates for environmental conservation and sustainable living, believing in a close connection with nature. Naturism also fosters a sense of equality, as clothing often signifies social status, and its absence can help break down these barriers.
