Pre-registration open for World Sailing Inclusion titles
MUSCAT: World Sailing is excited to announce that pre-registration is now open for the first World Sailing Inclusion Championships, taking place at the Mussanah Sailing School at the Barceló Mussanah Resort in the Sultanate of Oman from November 30 to December 8, 2025. Organised in partnership with Oman Sail, this groundbreaking event marks a major milestone for the sport — the first multi-class, global championship hosted by World Sailing that is designed specifically to include both Para classified athletes and athletes with disabilities who do not meet IPC classification criteria, all racing side by side in an inclusive, high-performance environment. The championship will feature competition across five categories, including the RS Venture Connect two-person keelboat, which is open to both Para-classified and inclusive category teams using servo control systems; the Hansa 303 single class, which welcomes sailors regardless of classification; the ILCA 6 class, designated for athletes with intellectual impairments and requiring Virtus, Special Olympics, or World Sailing II classification; the RS21 blind fleet racing class, open to visually impaired sailors classified as B1, B2, or B3; and Seated Wing Foiling, an exciting new discipline open to both Para MIC-classified and self-declared inclusive athletes. Interested sailors, teams and MNAs are invited to complete the pre-registration form to express interest. Dr Khamis al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail Early pre-registration is strongly encouraged as entries will be limited per class, but sailors must note that pre-registration does not confirm entry due to the limited availability of charter equipment in each class and the rotational race formats detailed in the Notice of Race. Pre-registration will guide the organisers in the planning of equipment use, accommodation needs, classification logistics and the overall event structure. This is particularly important given the Notice of Race (NoR) and Sailing Instructions are available now on the World Sailing website and provide full details on eligibility, format, classification, equipment, and entry fees. Dr Khamis bin Salim al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail, said: 'We are honoured to host the first World Sailing Inclusion Championships. This event is a powerful statement about the importance of inclusion — both in sport and in society. We look forward to welcoming sailors from around the world to Oman for what promises to be an unforgettable championship.' Hannah Stodel, Para World Sailing Manager, added: 'This first edition of such a landmark event promises to be an exciting opportunity to showcase the diversity of our sport. The Inclusion Championships are a celebration of what sailing can be — inclusive, dynamic, and welcoming to all. From grassroots participants to elite competitors, this is a chance to compete on equal terms.' A dedicated competition site has now launched, where you'll find more information on equipment, registration and media contacts. It will also host the confirmed entry list, results and all event updates in the lead-up to and during the championships. 2028 Olympics tap Port of Los Angeles, Long Beach for sailing
The Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach's Belmont Shore are hosting the Olympic Games' sailing events in 2028. LA28, host committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, finalized the sailing venue plan, which will include sailing, windsurfing and kite events at both the Port of Los Angeles and Belmont Shore in Long Beach. Both venues were chosen by LA28 due to favorable racing conditions and optimal viewing conditions for spectators with coastal backdrops. GET TO KNOW YOUR CITY Find Local Events Near You Connect with a community of local professionals. Explore All Events The decision is historic for the Port of Los Angeles, which hosted the 1932 Olympic sailing events in its Outer Harbor nearly a decade ago. Long Beach hosted sailing during the 1984 Games. The Port of Los Angeles will host six boat events: men's and women's dinghy; men's and women's skiff; mixed dinghy; and mixed multihull. Belmont Shore in Long Beach will host men's and women's windsurfing and men's and women's kite. The events will be staged consecutively to optimize viewership and media coverage. The athletes in Long Beach will compete first, followed by the boat racing portion of the competition at the Port of Los Angeles. The venues are approximately 10 miles from each other. 'After close coordination with the cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach, along with collaboration from World Sailing, we are excited about the opportunity to utilize two of the best locations along the Pacific coastline for Sailing competitions in 2028,' said LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover in a statement. ST PHOTO: MARK CHEONG SINGAPORE – Singaporean kitefoiler Maximilian Maeder added another feather to his cap on June 20, when he was named Sportsman of the Year at the Singapore Sports Awards for the first time. It was his first nomination for the award, having previously won Sportsboy of the Year for three consecutive years. Following an impressive 2024 season, the 18-year-old edged out strong contenders – silat exponent Sheik Farhan Bin Sheik Alau'ddin, pool player Aloysius Yapp, badminton's Loh Kean Yew, and wushu exponent Jowen Lim – to clinch the Sportsman gong at the ceremony held at Swissotel The Stamford Singapore. Maeder is the first sailor to win the top men's award since 1999, when Siew Shaw Her, who won gold in the men's 420 class at the 1998 Asian Games, last received the accolade. The teenager dominated the international kitefoiling circuit in 2024, winning nearly every event, including the European and World Championships. In August, he became Singapore's sixth and youngest Olympic medallist after clinching bronze at the Marseille Marina. After the Olympics, Maeder continued his fine form by clinching the overall title at the Kitefoil World Series, before capping off a stellar season with victory at the Formula Kite Youth European Championships. His achievements were further recognised in November, when he was named World Sailing's Male Young Sailor of the Year. The Sportswoman of the Year award also had a first-time winner in Zeanne Law, who is the first wushu exponent to win the top female accolade. The other nominees for the award were Daphne Tan (bowling), Valencia Yip (kickboxing), Teh Xiu Hong (shooting), Nurdianna Sidek (silat) and Gan Ching Hwee (swimming). In 2024, Law won gold in the women's taijiquan and optional taijishan events at the World Taijiquan Championships in Singapore, in addition to a women's optional taijiquan gold at the Asian Wushu Championships. With their wins on June 20, both Maeder and Law became the first athletes in two decades to claim both junior and senior honours in consecutive years. Swimmer Mark Chay was the last male athlete to be crowned the 2001 Sportsboy and 2002 Sportsman, while sailor Joan Huang claimed the 1998 Sportsgirl and 1999 Sportswoman gongs. Organised by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and Sport Singapore (SportSG), the annual ceremony honours outstanding sporting achievements of those who have done well at the national and international levels. The event, which is supported by the Tote Board, was attended by SNOC president Grace Fu and Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo. The Straits Times senior correspondent David Lee picked up the Most Inspiring Sports Story of the Year award for his story 'Old is gold for Singapore's 70-year-old darts legend Paul Lim'. Eve McMahon takes top spot in latest World Sailing rankings
Eve McMahon has become the first Irish sailor to achieve a number one spot in the World Sailing rankings. The 21-year-old Dubliner charged up the ILCA 6 pecking order off the back of her bronze medal-winning performance at the ILCA World Championships in China last month. The result marked McMahon's first senior medal and saw her become the first Irish female sailor to medal at a senior world championship. The Howth Yacht Club sailor made her Olympic debut at last summer's Paris Games , where she placed 13th in the women's dinghy event. READ MORE Meanwhile, two-time Olympians Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove are ranked fourth in the world in the men's skiff, while in the ILCA 7 class, Finn Lynch sits seventh and Ewan McMahon has achieved a career-best of 11th. Commenting on the rankings, Irish Sailing's performance director James O'Callaghan said: 'To have five senior athletes ranked so high globally is a remarkable achievement and a true reflection of the depth of talent in Irish sailing. 'For Eve to reach World Number One at just 21 years of age is exceptional. It proves, once again, that Ireland consistently punches above its weight on the international stage in sailing. But, whilst these ranking are a significant and welcome marker, our athletes remain focused on delivering at key events.' The updated rankings follow confirmation that Dún Laoghaire will host next year's ILCA World Championships.
