Sri Lanka crush Bangladesh in second Test to seal series

KODIKARA) Sri Lanka completed a thumping innings and 78-run victory over Bangladesh before lunch on day four of the second Test in Colombo on Saturday, wrapping up the two-match series 1-0. Resuming the day on a precarious 115-6, the visitors still trailed by 97 runs and needed a minor miracle to avoid an innings defeat. Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, under the pump after a wicketless outing in the first innings, struck gold with the fifth ball of the morning as Litton Das edged behind to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis for 14. With that scalp, the last recognised batter was back in the hut and Bangladesh's house of cards came tumbling down soon after, all out for 133. Cummins hails match-winners as Australia registers easy win over Windies

Bridgetown (Barbados), June 28 (UNI) In a match that ebbed and flowed, it was Australia who emerged victorious against West Indies in the opening Test of the three-match series in Bridgetown. While the win may not erase the heartbreak of Lord's just two weeks ago, it marks a positive start to their World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, with their first points now on the board. There was little to separate the sides after the first two innings – just 10 runs, in fact. Jayden Seales' five-wicket haul helped bowl Australia out for 180, before a disciplined all-round effort from the Australian bowlers restricted West Indies to 190, giving the hosts a slender lead. Australia found themselves in trouble at 65/4 after another top-order collapse, but the middle-order trio of Travis Head, Beau Webster and Alex Carey steadied the ship with crucial half-centuries. Head and Webster put together a 102-run stand, with Head playing the aggressor. After Head's dismissal, Carey took charge, highlighted by two brilliant straight sixes off Seales and Justin Greaves. "I thought those three were brilliant," Australia skipper Pat Cummins said at the post-match press conference. "They kept the scoreboard ticking over. I thought they took really good options. They were always looking to score. 'Really, that was the difference. [You are] turning up today thinking that if we didn't get a big lead it was 50-50, really. Those guys took the game away from West Indies." Cummins was particularly impressed by Beau Webster, who, despite having played just five Tests, has already built a reputation for digging Australia out of tough spots with grit and composure on challenging surfaces. On debut against India, the 31-year-old made an instant impact, scoring a half-century on a spicy Sydney pitch in the first innings and following it up with a brisk unbeaten 39 in their victorious chase. In the World Test Championship Final against South Africa, Webster stood tall with a counter-attacking 72 off 92 balls, the top score in Australia's first-innings total of 212. Against West Indies, he once again proved pivotal, anchoring two key partnerships in the second innings with a composed 63 off 120 balls that turned the tide in Australia's favour. He also made an impact with the ball, claiming two wickets in the first innings. "I think it's pretty much the same as what he does for Tasmania," Cummins said on Webster. "He seems to always contribute in some way. He's kind of knocked down the door with his performances over the years in Shield cricket. It's great when you've got someone like that coming to the team. 'They know their craft so well and you saw that today, even on a tricky wicket, he knew where his areas to score were. He's been a fantastic asset to the team over the last six months." After setting West Indies a target of 301, Australia needed just one session and under 34 overs to seal the win, dismantling the hosts for 141. Leading the charge was the ever-reliable Josh Hazlewood, who delivered a brilliant five-wicket haul to cap off the dominant performance.

Gautam Gambhir Gets Big Warning: 'You Got Every Player You Want, Now Deliver...'

Last Updated: Aakash Chopra believes head coach Gautam Gambhir has got 'every player he pointed at' and is now under pressure to deliver results, without any excuses. Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that question marks will mount over head coach Gautam Gambhir if the team fails to do decently well in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Chopra said Gambhir has been given everything he has asked from the selectors and is now under pressure to deliver results. Though India won the 2025 Champions Trophy under his tutelage, India's Test fortunes have fallen off a slope in Gambhir's tenure, which began last year. India has won just three of the 11 Tests, while also suffering a humiliating first-ever home whitewash and a 3-1 away loss to Australia. In England, India started the first Test well but were exposed for their under-preparedness and lost by five wickets to concede a 1-0 lead. 'There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel. 'The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket and red-ball cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches. He has won 2 matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, we lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been losing and losing," he added. 'His performance in white-ball cricket has been good. The team has been playing well. But in Test cricket, I think the questions are going to be there. And I think there is a lot of pressure on this series. If this series doesn't go well, God forbid, I hope it goes well. I really want Indian cricket to do well. But if the England series doesn't go too well, then there will be a question mark — Where are they going and what are they doing?" Chopra added. He further said: 'Because the selectors feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if this is the case, then you also need to deliver the results. Period. There is no excuse," he added. Apart from being seemingly in total control of the team without any seniors or influential coaches around, Gambhir has also got his way with some off-field controversial rules that dictate players' movements and time with their families. A big defeat in this five-Test series will put India quite behind in their aim to secure a World Test Championship final berth, after missing out last time. First Published: June 28, 2025, 09:42 IST

‘Made up my mind': Najmul Shanto resigns as Bangladesh Test captain after innings defeat in Sri Lanka

Following a harrowing series defeat in their first bilateral contest of the new World Test Championship cycle in Sri Lanka by an innings 78 runs in Colombo, Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said that he is stepping down from the role on Saturday. 'I don't want to continue [as captain] in the Test format anymore,' Shanto announced in the post-match press conference, adding that it wasn't an emotional reaction to the series defeat. The southpaw had starred in the rain-affected first Test in Galle when he struck twin centuries in the Test to become only the fourth Bangladesh captain the feat in a match and joined a handful of Asian batters to record the feat twice in Tests. Aggregating a total of 300 runs in two Tests, Shanto emerged as Bangladesh's leading run-getter in the series. Batting first in the second match, Bangladesh posted 247 before Sri Lanka replied with a massive 458 on the back of opener Pathum Nissanka's 158. Sri Lanka then bundled out Bangladesh for 133 on the fourth morning on the back of left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya's five-wicket haul. 'This is not personal. I have taken the decision for the betterment of the team,' Shanto said. 'I think this will help the team. I have been a part of the dressing room for the past few teams. I think three captains [for the three international formats] is not sensible. I don't know what the board will feel about this, and I will support their decision. But this is my personal decision. I think three separate captains will be difficult for the team to deal with,' Shanto said after he was replaced by Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the ODI skipper earlier in June. 'I would want that no one feels this decision is emotional, or that I am disappointed by something. I want to make this clear. This is for the betterment of the team,' Shanto added. From November 2023, Shanto captained Bangladesh in 14 Tests, during which they won four, including two significant victories in Pakistan in August 2024. Despite nine losses and a single draw (against Sri Lanka), Shanto's individual batting form saw a marked improvement. As captain, he averaged 36.24, a notable increase from his non-captaincy average of 29.83. His contribution was particularly evident in the four wins, where he averaged 37.16
