LED-mounted vans to spread rabies awareness in neighbourhoods in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) launched LED-mounted mobile vans to spread awareness about rabies across its 243 wards as part of a citywide campaign aimed at eradicating the disease by 2030. The initiative was flagged off Monday from BBMP headquarters to mark World Zoonoses Day. The vehicles will travel across neighbourhoods broadcasting messages about rabies prevention, importance of timely animal vaccination and how to respond to dog bites. BBMP is extending the campaign to schools and colleges — both govt and private — where students will be sensitised about the disease, especially given their frequent interactions with stray animals. "Rabies is a deadly but entirely preventable disease," said Vikas Kishore Suralkar, BBMP special commissioner for animal husbandry and health. "People in cities live in close contact with animals, particularly dogs. When a bite occurs, it can have serious consequences if not addressed quickly. That's why regular vaccination of animals and public awareness are essential," he added. "We urge citizens not to distance themselves from animals thinking they are dangerous. Understanding animal behaviour and spreading awareness is key to preventing rabies," he added.

BBMP to conduct rabies awareness campaign in LED-equipped vehicles

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will conduct mass awareness campaigns to eradicate rabies through specially designated, LED-equipped vehicles across its limits. The vehicles will travel to all wards to educate citizens about rabies prevention. The BBMP will also reach out to BBMP-run government, and private schools and colleges to educate students about rabies prevention and control, and send the campaign vehicles there. Taking part in the observation of World Zoonoses Day (marked on July 6) on Monday, Special Commissioner (Health), BBMP Suralkar Vikas Kishor stressed on the importance of proactive measures to prevent the spread of rabies. 'Several diseases are transmitted from animals to humans. People are often in close contact with dogs, and dog bites can lead to serious health issues. Therefore, it is essential to vaccinate animals regularly against rabies and to spread awareness among the public,' he said. 'No one should isolate or avoid animals out of fear. Instead, we must learn to co-exist and understand their behaviour. Further IEC (Information, Education & Communication) activities related to zoonotic diseases will also be undertaken,' he added. The official also said that BBMP in collaboration with KVAFSU- WOAH Reference Rabies diagnostic Laboratory, Charlie's Animal Rescue Center (CARE), WVS-Mission Rabies and other Animal Welfare Organisations (BBMP service providers) is making efforts to make Bengaluru rabies-free by 2030. This includes mass dog vaccination drives and the implementation of advanced rabies surveillance systems.

The vaccination drive was formally inaugurated at the Kothapeta Nehru Bomma Centre in One Town and at the Jeevakarunya Organisation's Iron Yard in Bhavanipuram. The inauguration was led by Dr Hanumantha Rao, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, NTR District, alongside 52nd and 53rd Division Corporators Ummadi Venkateswara Rao and Mahadevu Appaji. Speaking at the event, Joint Director Dr Hanumantha Rao underscored the critical importance of controlling zoonotic diseases—illnesses that can be transmitted between animals and humans. He highlighted common zoonotic concerns such as rabies and leptospirosis from dogs, tuberculosis and brucellosis from cattle, anthrax from goats and sheep, and bird flu from poultry, all of which pose serious public health risks. Dr Gopal Naik, AMHO-3, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, urged citizens to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures against the spread of dangerous diseases like rabies, anthrax, and brucellosis. He also noted the historical significance of July 6, 1885, when scientist Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first rabies vaccine to a nine-year-old boy. Dr Venkateswara Rao, Assistant Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, informed that the government is actively working to prevent the spread of life-threatening diseases, including anthrax. As part of this broader campaign, anti-rabies vaccines were specifically administered to pet dogs during Sunday's drive. Ummadi Venkateswara Rao (52nd Division Corporator) encouraged all city residents to take full advantage of such public health programs. The VMC also distributed informative leaflets explaining best practices for managing street dogs and emphasizing the importance of rabies prevention. Among those present at the event were Dr Annapurna (AMHO-1), and veterinary doctors from Navodaya Vet Society including Dr Ganga Bhavani, Dr Ramachandra Reddy, Dr Sai Krishna, Dr Ravi Kanth, and Dr Sri Lakshmi.

Ongole: The Animal Husbandry Department in Prakasam district observed World Zoonoses Day on Sunday by launching a large-scale vaccination programme for pet dogs and other animals. Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhana Rao inaugurated the mega vaccination drive, urging pet owners to ensure their animals are vaccinated. He emphasised that this measure is vital not only for the pets' health but also for protecting humans from diseases like rabies. District Animal Husbandry Officer B Ravi Kumar highlighted the significance of World Zoonoses Day, stressing that vaccinating all pets is essential to prevent them from spreading diseases that can be fatal to humans. He specified that the rabies vaccine should be administered to dogs once they reach three months of age, while the leptospirosis vaccine is recommended after 45 days. A booster dose for these vaccines should be given annually. Ravi Kumar confirmed that rabies vaccine stock is available at all regional animal hospitals across the district and at the veterinary polyclinic in Ongole.
