Wynne Evans takes swipe at BBC just weeks after it cut ties with him
Strictly Come Dancing star Wynne Evans parted ways with the BBC earlier this year and he's now taken a swipe at BBC Radio after having hosted a show on the station for years Former BBC Radio host Wynne Evans has taken a swipe at the radio station this week. It comes after he left his long-running show following a series of scandals whilst on Strictly Come Dancing last year and its subsequent live tour. It was announced back in May that Wynne, 53, would not be returning to his BBC Radio Wales show, which he had hosted since 2016. A spokesperson for the BBC said at the time that there were also "no plans" to work with him again. Wynne announced that he would instead host the Wynne Evans Show on other platforms. He then launched his new weekday radio show last month and later told fans that he had more than 40,000 listeners for the first episode. He has continued to promote the show in recent weeks and shared another message for fans on Instagram this evening. Wynne took aim at BBC Radio in a series of posts, in which he described the radio station as the "dark side". Alongside a cartoon of himself, the message for fans, who are referred to as 'Wynners,' read: "HELP!! We are looking for missing 'Wynners'!!! Did you previously listen to Wynne Evans on the dark side? (BBC Radio) are you missing his cheeky wit and charming charisma or do you just need cheering up in the morning? If so then tune into his new show available on iPhone, Android, Alexa and his website." Wynne shared the photo of his page. He wrote in the caption that accompanied it: "Let's find the missing Wynners - where are our friends that may be stuck on the dark side spread the word far and wide" He later shared a similar post on his Instagram Story. Wynne wrote in that caption: "Missing Wynners. Don't get stuck in the dark come and laugh and be in a place where the listeners are valued." The criticism comes after just weeks after it was reported that the BBC had cut its last remaining ties with him. It was confirmed last month that it has "no plans" for a second series of his travel show Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea. All at Sea, which launched on BBC One in January, saw Wynne sail along the southern coast of Wales with Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page, 48. The first series ended in February and a spokesperson for the BBC told the Mirror last month that there are "no plans" for a second series. A source told the Sun at the time that the decision to not renew the show "marks the end" of a relationship between Wynne and the BBC. They said: "It means that Wynne has no TV show or radio show with the Beeb, and effectively marks the end of their relationship." Wynne competed on Strictly last year and was partnered with professional dancer Katya Jones, 36, for the BBC show. The pair ended up apologising during the series for what he described as them "messing around," including over a scene of him with his hand on Katya's waist. It was later reported, whilst on the tour earlier this year, that he had apologised for using "inappropriate and unacceptable" language amid reports that he used the term 'spit roast' to Janette Manrara, 41, at a photocall. Wynne has since insisted that it was instead part of a nickname for their co-star Jamie Borthwick, 31, and "wasn't meant sexually". Wynne subsequently left the tour and his radio show after the scandal broke in January. As reported at the time, he said in a statement then: "I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. "I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me." Then in May he announced that he wouldn't be returning to his BBC Radio show following his departure months prior. He said in a statement: "From the very depths of my heart - thank you. These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know." Wynne told fans: "It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. That show wasn't just work - it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family. Thank you for welcoming me into your homes. Into your hearts." In a statement at the time, the BBC said: "[Wynne] is not under contract with the BBC." The spokesperson continued: "He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him."

For Wynne Evans – opera singer, Go Compare man, BBC radio presenter, Strictly Come Dancing scandal-generator – the response is to stubbornly carry on as before. This morning, a few weeks after announcing his BBC contract had not been renewed, he launched a rival to his old Radio Wales morning gig, The Wynne Evans Show, imploring his fans, the 'Wynners', to follow him on this new, DIY journey. Thousands did and were treated to a debut show beset by technical gremlins, filled with every emotion under the sun, swamped by a sense of grievance, yet containing glimmers of the heart-on-sleeve appeal that Evans has. Evans does not keep his cards close to his chest, and the past few days have seen an emotional This Morning appearance, newsletters filled with details about his homemade technical set-up, his 'holibobs' and struggles with his mental health, and Facebook posts laced with bitterness about his old BBC bosses. No doubt his old bosses will have been amused (and perhaps relieved) that the show got off to the worst possible start, as the first song, Robbie Williams's Let Me Entertain You, was accompanied by horrific electronic screeching. Several times Evans seemed to unplug something. The WhatsApp number and YouTube channel collapsed. Evans's one-man band, hosted from his front room, sounded distinctly ramshackle. That can be forgiven on day one – more off-putting was Evans's score-settling, dragging his rebirth into territory once occupied by Mid Morning Matters with Alan Partridge. Insistence that he was moving on and not dwelling on the incidents that soured his time on Strictly rang hollow, particularly when he announced that his first Question of the Day was: have you ever been fired? There were several references to 'the Other Side' and some truly Partridge-esque glee when he announced his listening figures, at 35,000, were already well above his old show. 'On the Other Side, we would have had a meeting with 10 people this morning,' he said. 'Today, I had a meeting with myself. And I still managed to get reported to HR!' Jokes like this are perhaps unwise following the Mail on Sunday's story about the seven separate grievances raised by BBC Wales employees against Evans between July 2023 and August 2024. Yet among the slightly unconvincing 'having the last laugh' rhetoric, there were recognisable glimmers of Evans's appeal. Having told the listeners 'he would not be here' without them, he received truly moving emotional honesty in return. One caller, Becky, spoke of her husband, Caleb, who had died last month from cancer, at the age of 37. Evans was reduced to tears, as many listeners will have been, as Becky spoke of their two-year-old, Connor. It was moments such as these where Evans's affable, emotional, warts-and-all persona shone. If he can truly move on from the Other Side and He Who Shall Not Be Named (what he calls Strictly), and focus on his bond with his thousands of fans, then Evans really could have the last laugh. 'I still haven't heard from the BBC,' he said at one point. The suspicion is, he is still waiting for that call. Wynne Evans dropped by BBC after 'inappropriate language' on Strictly tour
Wynne Evans has said he has been dropped by the BBC, following an apology saying that he used 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. The Welsh opera singer, 53, will no longer be a BBC Radio Wales presenter, he announced yesterday. A spokesperson for the BBC said: 'Wynne Evans is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him.' Evans, known for the insurance advertisements, revealed in January he would be taking some time out from both his radio show and the Strictly tour to prioritise his wellbeing. Earlier this month he claimed in an interview with the Sun on Sunday that he had not seen the statement apologising for the remark - an assertion that is believed to have been dismissed by the BBC. On Instagram on Friday, he wrote: 'My beloved Wynners, From the very depths of my heart - thank you. These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. "Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know. It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won't be returning to my radio show. "I'm gutted. That show wasn't just work - it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family.' Evans thanked his fans, and said he would have an online programme called The Wynne Evans Show, which he called 'terrifying'. 'This is our next adventure. And I need you more than ever,' he added. 'We will have great music, my question of the day, the mystery voice, your soundtrack stories and so much more, because we have each other again. We have a new home. I'm bringing more presenters soon and I am sure you'll recognise a few of the faces.' Evans added that he was 'full of nerves. Full of hope. Full of love. Because when we show up for each other - like we always have - anything is possible'. Earlier this year, he apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable' after The Mail On Sunday reported that Evans was heard making a remark to a woman in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event. It is understood he was given a warning over the remark by tour producers. In January, he said: 'I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. 'I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.' The singer, who performed in the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera and also won 2023's Celebrity MasterChef, told the Sun on Sunday earlier this month that the Strictly comment was not sexual or directed at one of the female cast but was a nickname for fellow contestant, EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick. He told the paper: 'I didn't see the statement, Old Spit-roast Boy was a nickname for Jamie Borthwick. I'm not a bad guy, I'm not a misogynist, I'm not any of these things.' Evans added: 'And so I went, 'I'm so sorry'. And that was taken as a formal apology, so the press team issued a statement. I didn't see it. 'When I read the apology within the context of the story as it had been written, I was absolutely horrified.' It is understood any statement issued on Evans' behalf by the BBC was fully approved by him, and the singer also posted his own statement on Instagram in which he apologised. During his time on Strictly, there was controversy over a clip on the show of him placing his hand on his professional partner Katya Jones' waist, which she moved. They both apologised claiming it had been a 'joke'. During January and February this year, Evans' six-part travel programme, Wynne & Joanna: All At Sea - with Welsh actress and Gavin And Stacey star Joanna Page - aired on BBC One.

The Go Compare star has confirmed he will not be returning to his radio show with a statement on social media. The TV personality was shown grabbing his Strictly Come Dancing partner Katya's waist before she pushed his hand away, in a moment that sparked widespread controversy. But the star later insisted the uncomfortable moment was a joke. He then came under fire for using the sexual term 'spit roast' to Janette Manrara during a Strictly photocall, later insisting it was directed at Jamie Borthwick and nothing to do with Janette. The graphic comment got Evans axed from the Strictly tour, before a video emerged of him sending a sex toy to his co-star Jamie, which was again met with criticism, reported The Mirror. Wynne has now revealed he has not had his contract renewed by the BBC, and he will not be returning with his radio show. He has decided to continue to do his radio show elsewhere. And I need you more than ever. We will have great music, my question of the day, the mystery voice, your soundtrack stories and so much more, because we have each other again." A spokesperson for the BBC said: "Wynne Evans is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him."
