Proton, Grab Malaysia expand partnership with more car models and e-hailing perks
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd and Grab Malaysia have expanded their partnership to offer more car models, including the Proton S70 and X-Series, with added benefits for Grab drivers. In a statement, Proton said the partnership builds on the success of the 'Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners' campaign launched in November 2024, which has so far generated 220 leads and resulted in 148 Proton Saga registrations. The continued collaboration underscores the strong demand for Proton's models in the e-hailing segment and reinforces the shared goal of modernising Malaysia's ride-hailing with affordable and reliable cars. Driver-partners can now choose from a wider range of Proton models, including GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) options. The partnership also offers up to RM13,000 in cash rebates, a 5% service discount for two years or 40,000 km, and RM500 in fuel support to ease initial ownership costs. 'Our strengthened partnership with Grab Malaysia marks a crucial step in empowering the e-hailing sector. Proton is thrilled to make our S70 and premium X-series models more accessible to Grab drivers. 'For gig workers, this comprehensive programme extends beyond exclusive benefits to assurance of driving Proton cars. Its reliability and affordable maintenance costs are important factors for those who use cars as their primary working tools,' Proton Edar deputy director sales, Ong Chee Wooi said. Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia's director of country operations and mobility, Rashid Shukor, said this collaboration made it easier for its driver-partners to access vehicles, enabling them to earn and support their families while meeting the growing demand for rides. 'With the expansion of our partnership – now extending to the S70 and premium X-series models —drivers now have the chance to elevate their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and cater to an even broader consumer base. Proton, six overseas suppliers to speed up localising tech components of new models
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd has signed six agreements with overseas suppliers to accelerate the localisation of high-tech component supply for its upcoming car models. The national carmaker said four new joint ventures and two technical agreements had been signed to strengthen local supply chain and introduce new competencies to its vendors. The agreements will accelerate the localisation of components for future Proton models across both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) segments. The partnerships are also expected to increase local content value and support the introduction of advanced technologies to Malaysia's automotive ecosystem. Beyond benefiting Proton directly, the initiative is set to uplift the capabilities of local automotive vendors and enhance their competitiveness at both regional and global levels. The joint venture agreements cover key vehicle systems such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), braking and lighting as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The setting up of new component supply chains aligns with Proton's strategy to deliver production efficiencies and competitive costs the next generation of vehicles. Among the collaborations, Delloyd Technology Bhd and Imotion Automotive Technology (Suzhou) Co Ltd will localise ADAS systems for the upcoming AMA01 model. Meanwhile, PEPS JV (M) Sdn Bhd and Liuzhou Sanly Autoparts Co Ltd will develop braking systems for both the AMA01 and X-Series, while JHM Consolidation Bhd and Jiangsu Dekai Auto Parts Co Ltd will advance headlamp production capabilities for future Proton vehicles. The agreement between Trillion Speed (M) Sdn Bhd and Shanghai Yinlun Heat Exchange Systems Co Ltd involves localisation of HVAC systems, bringing new technologies and job opportunities into the local ecosystem. For the technical agreement, SHJ Interia Sdn Bhd and Changchun Fawsn Automotive Trim Co Ltd will develop interior manufacturing technologies and establish a research and development facility in Malaysia. Separately, Xenso Electronics Sdn Bhd and Freetech Intelligent Systems Co Ltd will co-develop ADAS rear and side detection systems for enhanced vehicle safety features. Proton chief procurement officer Wang Huaibing said this reflects its long-term commitment to manufacturing vehicles in Malaysia while also turning the country into an automotive hub by contributing to the realisation of the Automotive High Tech Valley that is led by the shareholders. "With high technology components becoming an increasingly vital component in our models, it is important for Proton to bring the development and production of these components to the local ecosystem, to gain a cost advantage as well as to upskill the capabilities of its research and development team and vendor," he added.
