Apple's upcoming iPhone lineup is the most exciting we've seen in years
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. Over the past few years, Apple's iPhone releases have offered incremental improvements. A slight redesign here, some moderate camera improvements there, and so on and so forth. Still, Apple's iPhone has remained incredibly popular and a money-making machine. During the last holiday quarter, for example, the iPhone alone generated nearly $70 billion in revenue for Apple. All the while, critics and tech pundits who have incessantly been shouting that 'the iPhone has peaked' have been proven wrong time and time again. The reason why Apple's iPhone continues to impress is partially due to the fact that consumers today are holding onto their iPhones for longer than ever before. The end result is that most users aren't looking at the iPhone 17 and comparing it to the iPhone 16. Rather, prospective users are looking at the iPhone 17 and comparing it to devices like the iPhone 11, 12, or 13. So, while iPhone improvements are admittedly incremental from year to year, those improvements are all the more drastic when compounded together. This, coupled with the stickiness of the iOS platform, is why Apple has managed to keep iPhone sales robust despite an avalanche of skepticism from naysayers Today's Top Deals XGIMI Prime Day deals feature the new MoGo 4 and up to 42% off smart projectors Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Apple's upcoming iPhone lineup is intriguing Looking ahead, Apple's iPhone roadmap is more intriguing and exciting than it's ever been. If you've been underwhelmed by the last few iPhone releases, there's good news on the horizon. Over the next few years, Apple is poised to launch some of its most innovative and groundbreaking iPhone models yet. Indeed, it's fair to say that upcoming iPhone models will arguably introduce a level of innovation we haven't seen since Apple introduced the iPhone X back in 2017. Now, you might be wondering: Why is it taking Apple so long to deliver a game-changing new iPhone? Well, the answer is that revolutionary products, by definition, don't show up every single year. It's what makes them so special when they do. It's easy to forget that revolutionary new products take time, an ungodly amount of R&D, and typically involve design and testing schedules can sometimes stretch out for years. All that said, let's take a closer look at why Apple's upcoming iPhone roadmap is incredibly exciting. iPhone Fold enters the fray Without question, the most intriguing iPhone model on Apple's product roadmap is a foldable iPhone. We've seen reports and rumors of a foldable iPhone for years, but it's starting to look like the release of such a device is more a matter of when than if. According to reports, Apple's take on a foldable iPhone will be more akin to Samsung's Galaxy Fold than the Galaxy Z Flip. In other words, Apple's foldable smartphone will open up into a large-screened tablet style device as opposed to a flip phone. Consequently, it stands to reason that the selling point for Apple's device will be more about productivity and entertainment than compactness. Of course, it's no secret that Apple typically doesn't enter a new market unless it can deliver a best-in-class device. In other words, there's a strong chance that Apple's foldable iPhone will be decidedly better than anything on the market. To that end, a new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reveals that Apple's foldable iPhone will not suffer from a creased display. According to my latest industry survey, Apple has chosen Samsung Display (SDC)'s creaseless display design over its own internal solution to ensure mass production of the foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026. The display metal plate is one of the key components for achieving a creaseless design. The main cause of creases in foldable displays stems from stress concentration due to repeated bending, which leads to material fatigue and permanent deformation. Metal plates help distribute and manage the stress generated during bending, reducing the risk of exceeding the material's elastic limit and thereby minimizing crease formation. This is promising news, to be sure. As intriguing as Samsung's foldable smartphones are, they suffer from visible creasing after heavy use. Some Samsung users have even noticed a crease forming after just a few weeks. Specs wise, little is known about the rumored iPhone Fold, save for rumblings that it will feature a 7.8-inch display. As for a release date, there are now reports pointing to a 2026 launch. It's also possible that it may ship in 2027 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone. Note that Apple typically tries to release new products to commemorate big anniversary dates. The two most notable examples include the 20th anniversary Mac released in 1997 and the redesigned iPhone X released in 2017 to mark 10 years of the iPhone. iPhone 17 Air to arrive before the iPhone Fold Before the iPhone Fold arrives, we can look forward to the iPhone 17 Air. Set for release later this year, Apple's rumored iPhone 17 Air will reportedly be the thinnest iPhone ever. It will reportedly be 5.5mm thick. This would make it drastically thinner than the iPhone 6, which was 6.9mm thick. What's more, the iPhone 17 Air will be impressively light. Rumor has it that the device will weigh just 145 grams. To compare, note that this is even less than the iPhone SE 2, which weighs 148 grams. Other specs include a 6.6-inch 120Hz ProMotion display, a titanium-aluminum hybrid frame, Apple's latest A19 processor, and 12GB of RAM. Put differently, the iPhone 17 Air will be closer to an iPhone Pro than to the entry-level model. One other rumor we've seen suggests that Apple's ultra-thin iPhone will ship with the company's C1 modem. Recall that the C1 modem is an Apple-designed modem that made its debut on the recently released iPhone 16e. A video alleging to show what the iPhone 17 Air form factor looks like can be seen below: The removal of the Dynamic Island Last but not least, we have rumors that future iPhone models will completely eliminate the Dynamic Island. Specifically, all of the sensors, including the camera, will reportedly be embedded beneath the display. The end result is an all-screen iPhone. According to reports, we may see this type of device as soon as 2027. And who knows, perhaps it will be the defining feature of the aforementioned iPhone Fold. Or, perhaps it will simply be a core feature of the regular iPhone 19 lineup. Either way, it's clear that the current iPhone design won't be around forever. All told, with the iPhone Fold, the iPhone Air, and the removal of the Dynamic Island, Apple's iPhone roadmap is incredibly strong and intriguing. If you've been bored by recent iPhone releases, the next few years will seemingly be much more exciting. Scientists found a 100 million-year-old ‘zombie fungus' preserved in amber
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. From being the main antagonist of a major video game and now television franchise, zombie fungus like cordyceps have quickly become a popular point of scientific intrigue. However, these interesting mushrooms and fungi have lived far longer than you might expect. In fact, a newly discovered piece of amber shows that the 'zombie fungi' actually lived over 100 million years ago. Beyond being a plot device in 'The Last of Us,' cordyceps has also proven to be a possible tool in the fight to cure cancer. Beyond that, though, discovering a new strain of almost 100 million-year-old zombie fungus preserved in amber is exciting for a number of reasons. The newly described fungi, Paleoophiocordyceps gerontoformicae and Paleoophiocordyceps ironomyiae, look to have operated very similar to their modern entomopathogenic relatives. Today's Top Deals XGIMI Prime Day deals feature the new MoGo 4 and up to 42% off smart projectors Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Much like the zombie fungi that can be found today, these new fungi sprout stems from their dead hosts, allowing them to infect other animals and insects as they come close to it. The newly discovered hunk of amber shows an ant pupa, which died and then sprouted a slender fungal stem. The amber also contains a fly, which has been pierced by a second type of fungus: a projectile-like stroma. This discovery is exciting because it shows that even 100 million years ago, zombie fungi like this were found throughout the world. Based on the count of the stalks, as well as the arrangement found within the fungus, it appears they can be tied to the modern Ophiocordyceps family, despite the fact that the lineage for the genus split more than 130 million years ago. Of course, we all know that amber is a bit of a time capsule for ancient days. It even starred as a primary source of DNA for researchers in the fictional 'Jurassic Park,' which has spurred on a franchise of multiple movies, video games, and even television shows. Of course, the chances of actually pulling working DNA from amber is very slim, but it's still cool to be able to look back in time and see a 100 million-year-old zombie fungus frozen in time. Leaked hands-on preview says Galaxy Z Flip 7 finally eliminates the display crease
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 on Wednesday, but we think we already know everything about the two upcoming foldable phones. The Fold 7 and Flip 7 have shown up in plenty of leaks over the past few months, including a few exciting last-minute ones. We know both handsets will be thinner than all their predecessors, with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 slimming down to an 8.9 mm profile. We already saw real-life photos of a Fold 7 unit a few days ago, and they seem to confirm those dimension-related claims. Today's Top Deals XGIMI Prime Day deals feature the new MoGo 4 and up to 42% off smart projectors Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Even more interesting is a hands-on video showing a Galaxy Z Flip 7 unit that highlights two exciting features coming to Samsung's next-gen clamshell phone. First, the cover display extends from corner to corner and edge to edge, incorporating the two-lens camera. Second, the hands-on video suggests Samsung may have finally fixed the one design issue we've had with all its foldables since the original Fold. There's no crease on the Flip 7 unit you're about to see. That's good news for the Fold 7, and even more so for the foldable iPhone Apple plans to release next year. The Fold 6 and Flip 6 came with visible creases The first thing I did during my Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 hands-on experience last year was check whether Samsung had managed to eliminate the crease that appears in the middle of the screen, right over the hinge mechanism. Unfortunately, both the Fold 6 and Flip 6 had visible creases. You could see the crease whether the screen was on or off. You could also feel the crease while using the handset, a problem that affects the Flip more than the Fold. That's because the Flip's crease is horizontal, while the Fold's is vertical. You'll feel it when scrolling on the Flip, but not as much on the Fold. Still, the crease has been an annoying visual compromise we've had to accept with foldable phones for years. Late last year, Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold SE in Korea and China. The upcoming Fold 7 is largely based on that model, and the Fold SE nearly eliminated the crease. I speculated at the time that the Fold 7 would do the same, but the hands-on leak we got last week didn't confirm it. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 hands-on video Romanian site got its hands on what appears to be a commercial version of the Galaxy Z Flip 7, retail box included. They posted a video on social media that quickly made the rounds. The hands-on clip gives us a short demo of the thinner Flip 7. We get to see every design detail, from the larger cover screen to the crease-less display. I had to rewind and rewatch the video a few times looking for the crease, and it just isn't there. I said in my review last year that the Flip 6 felt like a real flagship. After years of compromises, Samsung finally gave fans a high-end Flip experience. But the crease was still there. Even if you get used to it, you can't ignore it. The early Flip 7 hands-on experience in the clip above tells me the Flip 7 should feel even more like a premium phone than its predecessor. Why is this important for the foldable iPhone? Apple is reportedly releasing a foldable iPhone next year. The crease has been a major concern for Apple. Several reports have said the company spared no expense in developing a hinge mechanism and a foldable iPhone display that prevents a visible crease from forming in the middle. If Samsung reaches that milestone a year before Apple, it gives the Korean company bragging rights. It can mass-produce crease-free foldable displays for commercial products at least a year ahead of Apple. Even more importantly, Samsung can supply foldable displays to Apple that meet its design standards. Reports covering Apple's plans also said the foldable iPhone will drive growth for Samsung Display, the Samsung subsidiary that produces the high-end foldable OLED panels used in phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. Samsung Display is also one of the main suppliers of screens for non-foldable iPhones. It's been making OLED screens for Apple since the iPhone X introduced Apple's first all-screen design. Perseids: How to watch one of 2025's most spectacular meteor showers
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. One of the best meteor showers of 2025, the Perseids, is set to kick off this month, as the shower will reportedly be active from July 14 to September 1. Despite having such a long activity time, though, the meteor shower isn't expected to peak until well into August — the night of August 12 to 13 to be exact. While the peak will see upwards of 75-80 meteors per hour, that might not actually be the best time to see them. That's because the Moon is expected to be 84% full at that time, which means it will be an exceptionally bright night sky. You'll still be able to see the meteors, though, especially after 11 p.m. local time, when its peak begins. Today's Top Deals XGIMI Prime Day deals feature the new MoGo 4 and up to 42% off smart projectors Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals However, many skywatchers recommend going outside and catching a look at the best meteor shower of 2025 before then. In fact, the best time to see the Perseids will likely be between July 21 and 27. That's when the Moon phases will be moving toward the New Moon, which is darkest Moon of the month. Specifically, the Old Farmer's Almanac says that on July 24, the New Moon will be in full effect, making it easier to see the bright meteors as they streak across the sky. The Perseids are one of the best showers of the year simply because of how active and bright they are. We experience this shower when Earth passes through the debris trail left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. This is also the largest known object to repeatedly pass by Earth, and the debris trail it leaves behind moves at around 133,200 miles per hour through space. While the fragments are typically only the size of a grain of sand, they light up when entering Earth's atmosphere. While seen in all latitudes, the best meteor shower of 2025 will be most visible from the Northern Hemisphere. Despite being one of the best, it is far from the biggest meteor shower of the year. That isn't expected to occur until December. However, in a few years, the Perseid meteor shower is expected to be even more astounding, as reports that the 2028 shower will evolve into a storm. How to master all of iPadOS 26's upgraded multitasking features
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. iPadOS 26 introduces a new windowing system for iPad. Now that multitasking is more powerful than ever, there are plenty of features and capabilities that iPad users will need to be aware of once iPadOS 26 officially launches later this year. In this article, we'll do our best to teach you about all of the different multitasking features and gestures in iPadOS 26 and how to make the most of them. Today's Top Deals XGIMI Prime Day deals feature the new MoGo 4 and up to 42% off smart projectors Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Forget about Split Screen and Slide Over — iPadOS 26 finally turns your tablet into a true laptop replacement. Here are the 3 new modes you'll find in the update: Full Screen Apps: Always use apps in full screen and swipe Home to switch between them. Windowed Apps: Resize and arrange multiple windows in a single space to multitask with ease. Stage Manager: Arrange windows across multiple groups for a focused multitasking experience. Of course, Full Screen Apps will look familiar. The Stage Manager capability is already available on M1 or newer iPads, and the new Windowed Apps experience comes to all supported iPadOS 26 devices, which is a major change for base-model and iPad mini users. You can find these options in the Settings app under Multitasking & Gestures. If you like to focus on one task at a time, the full-screen apps might be the perfect solution for you. However, if you're always multitasking and like to switch between apps at will, the Windowed Apps system is the way you should be using your iPad. After all, with this feature on, even if you have an app exporting a video or doing another task, iPadOS 26 will still handle it in the background while you're doing something else, such as messaging on WhatsApp, for example. It's also very handy to use with Apple's Magic Keyboard, as you can easily adjust the apps in whatever way works best for you. For Stage Manager, the experience is great if you're performing tasks that require multiple apps to be open at the same time. For example, if you typically have your Mail app open alongside Slack, or if you have Safari running at the same time as ChatGPT, Stage Manager will improve the experience. For the first time, I'd recommend you to give Windowed Apps a try, especially because this is what Apple has been carefully working on in the past year. In Settings > Multitasking & Gestures, select Windowed Apps. Here's everything you can do with them, as well as how I use the new multitasking feature: Close All Windows After Swiping Home: I left this toggle off, because otherwise you'll lose the ability to add a new app when swiping Home. To start a new session of windowed apps, go home and slide three fingers up on the trackpad. Automatically Show and Hide Dock: While I'd prefer the ability to keep the Dock active at all times, I keep this feature on, rather than having the Dock off. Four & Five Finger Gestures: Apple lets you switch apps by swiping left and right with four or five fingers, go home by pinching with four or five fingers, and open the App Switcher by pinching and pausing. I like these gestures, so I leave them on. Shake to Undo: Just shake your iPad to undo your previous action. Sure, why not? Swipe Finger from Corner: This feature isn't available in for windowed apps. Start PiP Automatically: When you swipe up to go Home or use other apps, videos and FaceTime calls continue in Picture-in-Picture mode. I find this very useful, and I left it on. Mac-like menus: Every time you open an app, you can see a Mac-like menu at the top of the display, which makes it easier to access common settings and actions such as 'Files,' 'Edit,' 'View,' 'Window,' and 'Help.' If you choose Full Screen Apps or Stage Manager, these options might slightly change. While you can take advantage of all these iPadOS 26 multitasking features without a keyboard, I'd highly recommend using Apple's Magic Keyboard or Smart Folio Keyboard, especially since there's no good way to use the iPad's keyboard without an external option.
