One of the largest banks in Europe confirms data loss after alleged cyberattack on its supplier
UBS Group AG has confirmed that company information was stolen in a cyber attack targeting one of its suppliers. This follows a report claiming that a hacker compromised the data of more than 1,30,000 employees of its supplier Chain IQ. Earlier, Swiss newspaper Le Temps reported that the employee data was published on the darknet after a ransomware attack on Chain IQ , a procurement service provider that spun off from Europe's seventh-largest bank in 2013. A hacker group identified as World Leaks, previously known as Hunters International, is reportedly responsible for the attack, according to the report. However, UBS has not confirmed the specific nature of the information that has been lost in the incident. What UBS said about the data breach In a statement to Bloomberg, the Swiss bank said: 'A cyber-attack at an external supplier has led to information about UBS and several other companies being stolen. No client data has been affected. As soon as UBS became aware of the incident, it took swift and decisive action to avoid any impact on its operations.' UBS' confirmation came after its supplier Chain IQ confirmed that it, along with 19 other companies, was targeted in a cyberattack . Swiss private bank Pictet was also affected, but said the exposed data was limited to recent invoice details with some suppliers. 'The information obtained through the cyberattack on ChainIQ systems does not contain any client data of Pictet,' the bank noted. Recent increase in cyberattacks on European banks In 2024, cyberattacks on Swiss financial institutions increased by nearly 50%, according to the country's financial regulator, which identified outsourcing critical operations to third parties as a major operational risk. Elsewhere in Europe, the European Central Bank warned that some banks are still falling short in addressing cyber threats, pointing to data breach es at ABN Amro and Banco Santander caused by hacks at external suppliers. Vi partners with AST SpaceMobile to expand mobile connectivity in remote parts of country
Vi (previously Vodafone Idea) has partnered with AST SpaceMobile to bring space-based mobile broadband connectivity to remote and hard-to-reach areas across India, the two companies announced today. The collaboration aims to use satellite technology to complement existing mobile networks and expand access to voice, video, and internet services without needing special devices or software. AST SpaceMobile is building a space-based cellular broadband network that connects directly to everyday smartphones. The company recently made the first voice and video call from space using a standard mobile phone, showing the practical use of its technology. In a press release, the company said that India, with over 1.1 billion mobile users, has strong 4G coverage and growing 5G services. However, areas with tough terrain remain hard to cover using traditional cell towers. This partnership aims to fill those gaps by combining Vi's network with AST SpaceMobile's satellite system. Under the partnership supporting the goals of the Digital India initiative , AST SpaceMobile will handle the design, launch, and operation of the satellite network. Vi will manage spectrum use, market access, and integrate the technology into its existing network. Donald Trump to extend TikTok deadline by 90 days
Donald Trump will extend the June 19 deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell the US operations of TikTok by another 90 days, the White House said on Tuesday, June 17. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the decision. She said 'President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok up and running.' Adding further, she said 'President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark,' saying the next three months will be used to work on closing the sale and ensuring that American users' data is protected. With the new deadline, TikTok will get more time to complete the sale, which is required under US law unless significant progress has been made. Trump says China's approval may be needed for TikTok sale Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he expected to approve the extension. When asked, he replied, 'Probably, yeah. Probably have to get China approval but I think we'll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.' In May, Trump had already indicated he would extend the deadline, partly because of the app's popularity with young voters during the 2024 election. What the US law says The law required ByteDance to sell TikTok's US assets or shut down the app by January 19, unless it showed major progress toward a sale. Trump, who began his second term on January 20, chose not to enforce the deadline and has since extended it twice—first to early April and then to June 19.] A deal was being discussed earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US business into a company controlled by American investors. However, the talks stalled after China pushed back following Trump's announcement of new tariffs on Chinese imports.
