Y2K fashion item spotted at popular Aussie retailer

What goes around, comes around, and fashion is no different — we've had halter tops, butterfly hair clips and jelly sandals all make a comeback in the last two years. And now, corporate fashion has been sprinkled with Y2K fairy dust in the form of skirt trousers, with the trend proving so big that it has landed at one of Australia's biggest department stores. An eagle-eyed social media user took to TikTok to share a clip of a pair of grey flared work pants with a mini skirt over the top. 'What in the early 2000s did I just spot at Target Australia,' she captioned the clip of the $50 item. Target isn't the only retailer jumping on the trend with stores such as Universal, ASOS and REVOLVE selling versions of them. Incu has a pair that retails for $945. A pair was even spotted in Zara a short while back. And, it's not just us mere mortals forking out cash for the Y2K item. Model and actress Kaia Gerber was spotted heading into a casting session wearing a version of the skirt trousers. Nicole Kidman also wore the skirt over pants look at the Academy of Country Music Awards this year. The first time around, stars such as Britney Spears and Ashley Tisdale were known for rocking the look. Kerrie Carucci, a Queensland-based stylist who has worked for brands such as Oroton, IDA+S, MOSS and Rebecca Valance, said that we are 'firmly in the era of reinvention'. 'The return of 'skirt trousers' is a natural progression of the Y2K revival that's dominated recent runways and high-street collections. We're seeing a generational reimagining of styles once dismissed or archived, now worn with a fresh eye and updated proportions,' Ms Carucci told 'Culturally, there's a craving for nostalgia – especially among Gen Z and younger Millennials, who are reinterpreting the early 2000s with both irony and affection. It's not about copying the past but recontextualising it through a lens of today. 'A layered look like this taps into expressive, non-binary styling, while also leaning into individuality – something we're seeing a huge swing towards in personal style and consumer behaviour.' She called the clothing item a 'style disrupter' in that it challenges traditional ideas of proportions, layering and what is typically considered flattering. 'For some, especially those who lived through the original trend, there's a sense of hesitation rooted in past fashion missteps. I, for one, sit firmly in that camp. For others, it's a celebration of boldness and creative self-expression — and that's the beauty of fashion: it invites conversation,' she said. She said that fashion is tied to self image and identity, and when trends are unconventional and revive a version of ourselves we've 'moved on from' it can feel uncomfortable to visit. But this revival signifies a cultural shift to push the boundaries of what's acceptable. Y2K sat at the crossroads of kitsch, rebellion and maximallist — a stark comparison to the minimalist, capsule, neutral wardrobe that followed after. Y2K featured items such as low-rise jeans, bedazzling and tiny shirts. But, according to Ms Carucci, in 2025 wearing these items was about reclaiming agency when it comes to body confidence, gender fluidity and the rejection of quiet luxury. 'It's a style movement that says more is more, and that fashion doesn't always need to be palatable to be powerful,' she said. So far, we've seen cargo pants, butterfly clips, halter tops, platform slides and logo heavy accessories make a return — many of which appeared at Kmart in 2023. The mini skirt — particularly the micro mini — has also made a huge comeback with brands such a Miu Miu reimagining it for a new generation. 'From a personal stylist's perspective, many Y2K silhouettes just aren't the most flattering or functional for the body shapes I work with every day.' As always, when a trend comes back, some people loved the idea of the skirt trouser return and others were slightly disturbed by the knowledge that what they once wore as a child was set to be a fashion staple of their adulthood. 'Wow they even got the late 90s polyester pant grey colour correct,' one social media user commented. Another said: 'You can't talk me out of believing that these clothes have been in storage for 25 years.' 'I can't believe that they corporate girlied y2k fashion like that,' one person said. Another said: 'My 15-year-old daughter saw them and said 'oh that is cool! Skirt over pants' while I was having 2000s flashbacks like it was my 'nam!' 'What in the 2004 business casual,' another social media user added. One commented: ' … but does it come in black for work? haha gosh I loved these as a kid.' 'Low-key need some,' one said, while another said seeing the item made them wish there was a Target in Canada.

Kmart sends nostalgic shoppers racing over $29 gadget: 'OMG I need it NOW'

Shoppers are racing to Kmart Australia stores to get their hands on a mini version of a retro item that's made an unexpected comeback. Alongside a resurgent interest in all things Y2K fashion and style, early 2000s inspired digital camera have suddenly become trendy again. This is despite most people already having a digital camera available at their fingertips via their smartphone. Kmart have jumped on board the trend by offering a range of standalone digital cameras. But the latest addition to their range - a cute key-chain sized Mini Digital Camera, priced at only $29 - has quickly earned legions of fans. The mass retailer released a TikTok video this week that showcased the camera being clipped onto a set of keys, emphasising its petite size. But despite its adorable stature, the video also demonstrated that it is a 'real' functioning digital camera with surprisingly good picture quality - and video recording capability to boot. The mass budget retailer's latest social media video is captioned: 'Yes, it's a real camera and yes, we will be bringing it everywhere with us these school holidays'. Within a day of being released, the TikTok video amassed over 400,000 views and 20,000 likes. Kmart fans couldn't contain their excitement about the mini-sized version of the retro item. 'OMG THATS SO CUTE,' exclaimed one shopper. 'I NEED THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!' excitedly declared another. 'I bought it when it just landed I love it! Can't stop using it,' another happy customer added. The online product description explains that the camera has a 'compact design and user-friendly features'. It also suggests the tiny device is 'ideal for travel, vlogging or spontaneous everyday snapshots'. The dimensions of the miniature gadget are 4.24cm (L) x 2.92cm (H) - and the screen display size is 2.43cm. The compact camera also comes with a USB charging and data cable, keychain, lanyard and 32GB memory card. It also has an built-in flash for night time photographers, as well as six filter options to jazz up images. But among the hundreds of replies to the recent viral video were confused remarks about 'why' demand for digital camera existed given that most people own smartphones. 'Other than for kids who don't have phones… why? We have camera's with us every day,' questioned one person. To this, a commenter offered a simple one-word explanation: 'Nostalgia'. Another added: 'Digital cameras are making a short comeback with the youth, just like bad fashion.' A third person confirmed that even though we've all 'got cameras in our pockets' they were certain 'plenty' of people are 'going to want' this cute buy. The comments were also filled with questions from curious shoppers about some of the functionality aspects of the camera. In reply to queries about the 'quality' of the pictures taken on the camera, one person confirmed that it 'is actually really good'. Others asked whether the device could capture videos, to which Kmart's own social media account confirmed that the camera had the capability to record videos. However those who haven't previously owned digital cameras were stumped as to how images taken on the camera could later be transferred to a phone or laptop. Some helpful replies explained that the camera's SD memory card could be inserted directly into some laptops to extract the images, or that you could transfer the files via the provided USB data and cable cord. Photos taken on the camera can also be printed out by placing the memory card into a photo printing machine – like the ones found in-store at Kmart. A recent statistic from eBay Australia revealed that searches for digital cameras have surged more than 48 per cent in the past year alone, with iconic 2000s-inspired models particularly in high demand.

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Just as flip-flops have staged a triumphant return this season, another nostalgic Y2K trend is now following suit: the anklet. From runways to celebrities and style influencers, the anklet trend has been slowly reemerging in newly imagined forms with modern, elevated twists. Think freshwater pearl accents, delicate gold box chains, and grown-up takes on the vibrant beads that once ruled summer camp. The latest A-lister to confirm the anklet revival for summer 2025? Gigi Hadid. More from WWD We Tested Dozens of SPF Lip Balms - These Are the Tinted Ones You'll Want to Reapply. The TikTok-Loved On Cloud 6 Shoe Is Now Available in Summer 2025's Trending Butter Yellow Colorway Dakota Johnson Steps Into Sculptural Allure With Ferragamo's 'F' Heels at Roberto Coin Event While promoting her new collaboration with Havaianas in New York this week, the model styled a tweed Marc Jacobs minidress with a vibrant pair of Havianas' Yellow Pop Flip-Flops. Buy Now at havianas $20 $20 Gigi is hardly the first celebrity to co-sign the return of anklets (though everyone knows that once a Hadid wears something, it *really* takes a trend to new heights). Earlier this year, Kylie Jenner attended Chanel's spring 2025 couture show wearing a mini skirt suit that she accessorized with a Chanel double-wrap chain anklet and pumps. The elevated styling of her look proved that today's wave of anklets aren't just reserved for the beach, instead they serve as a chic way to upgrade even your best heels. (Taking a beachier route, however, her older sister Kim hit the actual beach just last month wearing stacks of diamond anklets.) During a time when fashion is gravitating towards towards playful, childlike fun — from the Labubu takeover to jelly sandals to bag and shoe charms — it's no surprise that yet another throwback trend of our youth is back on the scene. But the beauty of this particular anklet resurgence is the range of style in which you have to choose from — jewelry brands like Jenny Bird are leaning into luxe, minimalist anklets with stunning and simple gold and silver chain designs to choose from, while brands like Dorsey and Free People are taking a campier route (literal summer camp, that is) with new takes on beaded and charmed anklets. Whether you're looking for something minimal and sleek to top off your ballet flats and pumps, or you prefer the Gigi Hadid route of beaded anklets paired with casual flip-flops, this season is full of chic anklet options to shop. Keep scrolling to add some of summer's standouts to your cart now. What causes elbows and knees to darken? Skincare tips on dealing with hyperpigmentation

With the return of Y2K fashion in full swing – think low-rise jeans, crop tops and micro-minis – showing more skin is back in style. Suddenly, dark elbows and patchy knees feel a lot more noticeable when your 2000s pop princess-inspired outfit requires showing off your limbs. First and foremost: Darker elbows and knees are completely natural. The skin in these areas is naturally thicker, often drier, and takes on more friction than the rest of our bodies. For people with more melanin-rich skin, this darkening is a normal variation – not something that needs 'fixing'. However, if this is something you'd like to address – whether for aesthetic preference, comfort or simply as an act of self-care – here's how to show your elbows and knees some TLC. WHY DO ELBOWS AND KNEES GET DARKER? Elbows and knees do a lot of heavy lifting – literally. These joints are constantly in motion and often come into contact with rough or hard surfaces. Whether you're leaning on your desk, kneeling during workouts, or crawling around after a toddler, this repeated friction and pressure can lead to skin thickening, dryness, and ultimately, hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation can happen when your skin responds to minor trauma or irritation by producing excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. Over time, this can cause those areas to appear darker than the surrounding skin. People with deeper skin tones may notice this more, as their skin naturally produces more melanin and is more prone to post-inflammatory darkening. Neglect plays a role in the darkening too. Elbows and knees are often skipped in our skincare routines, leading to a buildup of dead skin cells, dryness and dullness that makes discolouration more visible. In some cases, darker patches may also be caused by underlying medical factors like hormonal imbalances like Addison's disease, inflammation, certain medications, a vitamin B12 deficiency or allergic reactions. If you notice sudden darkening, changes in texture, rashes, or fatigue alongside pigmentation, it's a good idea to consult a healthcare professional. HOW TO BRIGHTEN HYPERPIGMENTED SKIN Unlike throwback fashion, good skin habits never go out of style. If you're looking to brighten your elbows and knees, the key is consistency, gentleness and patience. These spots didn't darken overnight, so they won't even out that quickly either. Here's how to care for your darkened elbows and knees: 1. EXFOLIATE GENTLY While scrubbing rough elbows and knees with grainy body scrubs or loofahs may feel satisfying in the moment, it can actually do more harm than good. Over-exfoliation causes micro tears, irritation, and inflammation – all of which can trigger even more pigmentation in these already-sensitive areas. Instead, opt for chemical exfoliants with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic acid and glycolic acid, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid. These actives work by gently dissolving dead skin cells and promoting even texture over time. Use them two to three times a week, and always follow up with a moisturiser and SPF. 2. HYDRATION IS KEY Dry, dull skin can make discolouration look more pronounced. Without proper hydration, your skin barrier becomes compromised, which can make it more prone to irritation from actives and environmental aggressors. Use rich moisturisers containing ceramides, shea butter, or urea to help soften rough patches and improve barrier function. Applying body lotion on damp skin (post-shower) can help to lock in hydration more effectively. For extra dry or thickened skin, consider body slugging – the K-beauty trick of applying an occlusive like petroleum jelly or a thick balm over your moisturiser to trap in hydration overnight. 3. INTRODUCE BRIGHTENING INGREDIENTS SLOWLY Once your skin is properly exfoliated and moisturised, it's time to bring in brightening products to reduce the appearance of excess pigmentation. Look for ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, azelaic acid and liquorice root extract, which are known for their brightening and anti-inflammatory properties. While you can use facial products on your body (no need to toss that serum that didn't work for your face), targeted body sticks containing these ingredients allow for more targeted application, making it easier to apply on small or curved areas without wasting product. If you're already using a brightening body lotion, you can layer a concentrated serum underneath to boost results. Start slow, especially if you're new to actives, then build up to daily use if your skin tolerates it well. For areas like elbows and knees, applying brightening products once a day in the evening is often enough. 4. DON'T FORGET SUNSCREEN Yes, even on your knees and elbows. Sun exposure is a major trigger for pigmentation, especially when using exfoliating acids or brightening actives. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable if you're serious about fading dark spots. 5. CONSIDER PRESCRIPTION OPTIONS IF YOU'RE NOT SEEING RESULTS If you've been diligently exfoliating, hydrating and using brightening ingredients but still aren't seeing much improvement, don't be discouraged – some types of pigmentation run deeper and may require professional intervention. A dermatologist can assess the underlying cause and customise a treatment plan tailored to your skin type and needs. They may recommend prescription-strength topical treatments such as: Tretinoin (a powerful form of retinoid): Known for increasing cell turnover and encouraging collagen production, tretinoin helps fade hyperpigmentation over time while smoothing rough or thickened skin. It can also improve overall skin texture and tone. Hydroquinone: Known as one of the most effective ingredients for treating pigmentation, hydroquinone works by inhibiting melanin production. It's typically used short-term under medical supervision to avoid side effects like irritation or rebound pigmentation. Topical corticosteroids (eg hydrocortisone): These can reduce inflammation and are often prescribed in combination with other brightening agents to calm irritated or reactive skin. Custom compounded creams: Dermatologists may also prescribe tailor-made formulas that combine ingredients like retinoids, hydroquinone, azelaic acid and kojic acid in a single product for a synergistic effect. If your pigmentation is linked to hormonal imbalances or inflammatory skin conditions, your doctor might explore oral treatments as well. These may include hormonal medications, oral anti-inflammatories or nutritional supplements. 6. EXPLORE LASER AND IN-CLINIC TREATMENTS If topical treatments don't yield results or you're looking for a more targeted approach, you may want to explore laser or in-clinic procedures. These are best suited for persistent hyperpigmentation and are especially helpful if you've already ruled out underlying medical causes. Some common options include: Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers: These are often used for treating melasma or post-inflammatory pigmentation and can help break down excess melanin in the skin. Multiple sessions may be required, spaced several weeks apart. Fractional lasers or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): These resurfacing treatments can help improve both pigmentation and skin texture. While effective, they may not be suitable for all skin tones, especially deeper complexions, due to the risk of post-treatment pigmentation.
