Mercedes reveals ridiculous electric supercar capable of hitting 224mph

Mercxedes-AMG has unveiled the Concept AMG GT XX, an audacious (and dazzlingly orange) electric supercar concept designed to showcase the next chapter of Mercedes' high-performance EVs. The four-door coupé packs in some seriously impressive stats. The standout figure is a bonkers peak output of 1,360hp, which far outpaces its nearest rival, the production Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. That power comes from a compact trio of specialised motors and a novel high-performance 800V battery, tech that Mercedes says is destined (in some form at least) to appear in its long-awaited electric performance architecture. Blending technology from Mercedes-AMG and the company's Formula 1 team, the Concept AMG GT XX is capable of a top speed of 360kmph (224mph). Charging speeds are just as sprightly – the high-voltage battery and direct cell cooling system enable hyper-fast 850kW charging, capable of adding 250 miles of range in just five minutes. At the heart of this performance leap are a set of three axial flux electric motors, developed in collaboration with British specialist YASA. These motors are smaller, lighter and more powerful than conventional radial flux motors, offering around three times the power density while being two-thirds lighter and occupying just one-third of the space. An intelligent direct cooling system, where a non-conductive oil flows around each of the more than 3,000 cells, maintains optimal temperatures. That's coupled with the same active air control system seen on existing AMG GT cars, in which a series of hidden vents in the front bumper open and close to regulate temperature. Even the wheels can cool themselves down, with actuators on each wheel automatically opening five 'aero-blades' to cool the brakes when needed. "The Concept AMG GT XX is the next milestone in the history of AMG and forges a whole new dimension of performance," said Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG. "With our high-tech axial flux motor, we're delivering a revolutionary new drive that is unparalleled in terms of power density, weight and packaging." Inside, the black-and-orange cockpit focuses on the driver, with a minimalist design, exposed body structures and high-quality materials. Two large displays – a 10.25in instrument cluster and a 14in multimedia touchscreen – control vehicle functions. The interior also showcases what Mercedes says are 'biotechnology-based materials', including 3D-printed ergonomic seats designed around your personal body scans. In short, it's moulded to fit your bum. As well as personalised support for your behind, other innovations include luminescent paint segments on the exterior that can display the car's charging status, as well as exterior speakers integrated into the headlights. Because why not? While obviously a delirious concept in its current form, the Concept AMG GT XX gives us a glimpse at some of the tech that Mercedes hopes will make it into its upcoming production sports cars in terms of drivetrain, battery technology, aerodynamics and materials. 'Crafting these masterpieces is about creating something extraordinary, from the C111 to the Vision One-Eleven and into the future of production,' said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Mercedes. 'The brand-new Concept AMG GT XX embodies the hot part of our design philosophy of sensual purity.'

Mercedes' electric family supercar of tomorrow: Concept AMG GT XX hits 224mph and adds 250 miles of range in 5 mins

Mercedes plans to take the electric car world by storm with a new family-size supercar that combines beautiful looks with the latest tech. Gunning for Porsche's Taycan, the standout four-door performance EV in the sector, the Concept AMG GT XX unveiled today previews a production car that promises to be a tour de force like nothing else seen in the electric car market. The AMG-developed concept is already a fully drivable vehicle - and one that boasts over 1,300bhp from cutting-edge e-motors, a radical design including a police-inspired light display, and a cockpit that could have been lifted from a prototype racing car. These elements combine to produce a host of jaw-dropping statistics. According to Mercedes bigwigs, it can hit 62mph in less than 2.5 seconds. The top speed is more than three times the legal speed limit in Britain. And its next-generation battery can add up to 250 miles of charge in the time it takes to fill up with petrol and pay for the fuel at the forecourt kiosk. And these aren't pie-in-the-sky claims; bosses say these figures are representative of what the top-spec version of the showroom-ready EV that's scheduled to arrive next year. Monumental electric power At the beating heart of the Concept AMG GT XX is an oil‑cooled 114kWh cell‑to‑pack battery delivering energy to a trio of 'axial-flux' motors that are key to the EV's incredible performance figures. Developed by British company YASA, they are around a third of the size of existing e-motors used in production EVs - and they are three times as power dense. In total, the three e-motors produce a staggering 1,341bhp. To put this into perspective, the £2.5million Bugatti Chiron hypercar's 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 petrol engine delivers 1,578bhp. Experts have likened the significance of axial-flux motor adoption for EVs to that of fuel injection of combustion engines in the late 1980s and early '90s as the replacement for carburettors. Two of these revolutionary axial‑flux motors drive the rear wheels, while a third provides power to the front-wheels making it an all-wheel-drive model. However, under slower driving conditions, the third e-motor automatically decouples from the drivetrain to turn the Concept AMG GT XX into a rear-driven EV to improve efficiency by reducing mechanical drag. Pedal to the floor, it is said to be able to go up to 224mph flat out. Yikes! Gunning for Porsche's Taycan , the standout performance EV in the sector, the Concept AMG GT XX unveiled today previews a production car that promises to be a tour de force like nothing else seen in the electric car market The AMG-developed concept is already a fully drivable vehicle - and one that boasts over 1,300bhp from a cutting-edge electric powertrain and e-motors, a radical design including a police-inspired light display, and a cockpit that could have been lifted from a prototype racing car The cylindrical-cell battery is also far more advanced than anything seen in existing mainstream EVs - and has been co-developed by AMG's Formula 1 powertrain division based in Brixworth, Northamptonshire. Switch from liquid to oil cooled is said to deliver more efficient heat transfer under sustained load, meaning the battery can operate at peak efficiency far longer than a conventional lithium-ion battery pack. The battery has a high voltage of 'more than 800 volts' and can support DC charging at up to 850kW - which is way beyond the capacity of any public charger in situ in the UK, or around the world. Theoretically, Mercedes claims it will be able to add 249 miles (400km) of range in a charge lasting just five minutes. Though this is likely dependent on a roll-out of faster charging points, which bosses said are on the way. Markus Schäfer, chief technology officer at Mercedes-AMG, said during the unveiling: 'Three years ago, 300kW charging on the road was unthinkable. Now it's reality. 'We're already seeing 480kW stations in China. 1000kW parks will come.' Mercedes is yet to confirm what the total driving range with a 100 per cent charged battery could be. The four-door family supercar will also incorporate double‑wishbone front and multi‑link rear suspension set‑up with adaptive air springs, active roll control, and rear‑wheel steering. Combined with all-wheel-drive and a mooted 50:50 weight distribution, it could be unmatched in terms of EV performance on track The arrangement of the powertrain is also ground-breaking. The production car will debut the German company's new electric car platform, which sees the battery pack integrated into the chassis to boost torsional rigidity and crash protection. The four-door family supercar will also incorporate double‑wishbone front and multi‑link rear suspension set‑up with adaptive air springs, active roll control, and rear‑wheel steering. Combined with all-wheel-drive and a mooted 50:50 weight distribution, it could be unmatched in terms of EV performance on track. So confident in the car's capabilities, Mercedes says it will attempt to break various records using the prototype ahead of the production car launching in 2026. 'The best minds in our global R&D network have contributed their extensive expertise – from Mercedes‑Benz in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim to Mercedes‑AMG in Affalterbach and YASA in the UK to our Formula 1 drivetrain experts at Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth,' Schäfer said. 'Together, they have developed the Concept AMG GT XX and are providing an insight into pioneering drivetrain technology and the future of performance. The technology programme pushes the boundaries even further and ventures into new ground.' He added that the car has the capacity to 'lift performance and endurance to a completely new level'. But AMG is adamant that Concept AMG GT XX should retain the emotional appeal of the big V8 petrol engine performance cars it produces en mass today. To achieve this, an eight‑speaker exterior sound system – mounted in the headlight housings – mimics acceleration sounds of a combustion powertrain. The concept car does without a rear window, though Mercedes hinted that this is most likely going to be a traditional glass panel when the production vehicle emerges in 2026 Will the production version look this good? There's no denying the Concept AMG GT XX is a gorgeous piece of automotive design. It's an extremely sleek - and very low - design that will likely be tweaked for the production four-door model to improve cabin space, especially head room. That said, Mercedes design boffins say the general shape will largely stay consistent, including its low-mounted grille, high shoulder lines, clean profile, massive wheels and dramatic rear light cluster. What's unlikely to be retained are the active aero vanes in the 21-inch wheel spokes, which open at slower speeds to improve brake cooling and close to improve the aerodynamic performance around the arches when a driver puts their foot down. The LED displays in the sills - made from luminescent paint - showing the state of charge of the battery also won't make it to the showroom car. The same can be said about daring features at the back, like the 730-LED dot-matrix panel between the rear lights, which can spell out a number of different combinations of words and characters - similar to the signs displayed in the back of traffic officer cars when they pull ahead of offenders and direct them to pull over at the side of the road. The striking six circular LED rear lights will be used for the production car. However, the same can't be said about the 730-LED dot-matrix panel between the rear lights. This spells out a number of different combinations of words and characters - similar to the signs displayed in the back of traffic officer cars when they pull ahead of offenders and direct them to pull over at the side of the road An airbrake spoiler deploying under heavy braking or at high speed, working in tandem with a large carbonfibre diffuser, will, however, be on the EV customers can buy from next year. The concept also does without a rear window, though Mercedes hinted that this is most likely going to be a traditional glass panel when the production vehicle emerges in 2026. But Mercedes says all the concept features here, though while they might not make next year's production car, are under development for models coming further down the line - so you might still be able to display expletives to cars behind in the future. Dual digital displays (the instrument cluster 10.25 inches and the main dash display 14 inches) dominate the front of the cabin, while the steering wheel is very much in the ilk of the unit used in the AMG One hypercar. The interior is also bathed in a variety of experimental materials - some of which might not make production. This includes biotech leather reportedly made from recycled GT3 tyres, protein‑derived bio‑silk door pulls (because handles weight too much) and an exposed carbonfibre roof with no headliner A family model with a race-car cockpit The four-door - and dour seat - coupe is dimensionally adequate for use as a family car, in the same way that the Porsche Taycan has achieved to date and the Lotus Emeya is also pursuing. But don't be fooled by these suggestions of practicalities, because once inside the Mercedes feels like a high-performance endurance racer. When can I buy one? A production version of the Concept AMG GT XX will be launched in 2026, and an SUV using the same EV architecture is expected to follow a year later as a challenger to the forthcoming electric Porsche Cayenne. There's no word on when order books will open, or how much it will cost, so eager EV converts will have to wait for more details to be released in the coming months.

Porsche Taycan to be blown away by new 1,341bhp monster Mercedes

Mercedes has revealed a brand-new concept car that it thinks will change the world of high-performance electric cars. The Mercedes-AMG GT XX is a four-door supercar that packs some pretty intimidating figures, but behind them is a range of new powertrain technologies that will proliferate into other Mercedes models, including one that'll take a similar form to this four-door concept from as early as next year. Advertisement - Article continues below The key development in the AMG GT XX is its new axial flux electric motors. Developed by British company YASA, the new motor is both considerably smaller and more power dense than existing technology, and its introduction represents a change that is as significant as when fuel injection replaced carburettors. An axial flux motor works in a completely different way to existing e-motor tech, fundamentally changing the internal structure and axis of rotation. This has many benefits, but the most important are that an axial motor is around one third of the size, and two thirds the weight, of an equivalent current e-motor, yet has three times the power density. The new tech's application in the GT XX is three-fold, because the concept mounts two motors on the rear axle and one on the front to create a tri-motor layout. The majority of the power is derived from the rear axle, with the front cutting in to help out with traction and helping produce that 1,341bhp peak power figure. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below No official torque figure has been shared yet, however Jӧrg Miska, the CEO of Yasa, assured us it would be 'thousands of newton metres'. The tri-motor set-up also allows for torque vectoring, which Yasa has experience with through the hybrid supercars – such as the Ferrari SF90 – that use its motors. However the GT XX takes things to 'a completely new level,' he told us. AMG is also working to give the upcoming production car a unique character among EVs, with the brand experimenting with computerised engine noises that have been teased on its social media channels. In the video, a prototype of the production car we'll see next year features a bassy, V8-like growl, and Mercedes' chief technology officer Markus Schäfer has hinted this will be paired with a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N-like virtual gearbox and engine mapping system to deliver 'everything that you expect in V8, V12 or race-oriented AMG'. Advertisement - Article continues below Speaking to Auto Express ahead of the GT XX's reveal, Schäfer acknowledged that 'bringing hardcore V8 fans to an electric vehicle is something that is definitely a challenge, and offering just a pure electric car doesn't do the job.' As a result, this concept, and the forthcoming production model, are supposed to tell a 'great story' through the technology onboard. As Schäfer put it, 'What is this axle flux motor that I have in there? How does the car feel in terms of noise, in terms of sound level, in terms of the vibration, in terms of the gear shift? Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below 'It has to touch the emotional side of you, and if it doesn't, it doesn't do the job,' he said. 'But this is what the Mercedes-AMG cars do, and that's exactly what we transferred piece by piece into this GT XX.' Yet high-performance electric motors are nothing without a battery pack capable of making the most of them, and in this case AMG has produced its own bespoke high-performance battery that can manage extreme and – crucially – repeatable power delivery. AMG has not released the specific capacity of the battery, or told us how much range the GT XX could offer – only that it would be 'significant'. But the creators have touted the benefits of its new tall and thin cylindrical cells, which sit within a temperature-controlled housing under the cabin floor. Advertisement - Article continues below Another innovation is that the car's electrical system runs at 'over' 800V, beating all contemporary competition, and allows it to achieve a colossal average charging speed of 850kW – a figure that's far beyond even the most advanced chargers in the UK, futureproofing itself for battery charging infrastructure that Mercedes has ambitions of installing across Europe. These speeds are enough to add around 250 miles of range in around five minutes. The design of the GT XX harks back to the experimental Mercedes C111, which was similarly used as a test bed for new technologies. The new car also represents the next evolution of the Vision AMG concept from 2022, and the Mercedes Vision One concept presented the year after that, with all three previewing AMG's new electric flagship that we'll finally see next year. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The extremely low and sleek shape will be amended slightly for production, allowing for a little more cabin space than the very tight concept. Its overall design, however, will be largely carried across, including the low-mounted grille, sleek sides, huge wheels and cut-off rear end with its six circular tail-lights. The concept has a few flourishes – for example, the active vanes built within the wheel spokes, illuminated sills made from luminescent paint, and a dot-matrix panel between the rear lights – but AMG is adamant that all these elements are in direct development for future production models. The concept also does without any form of rear windscreen, which will change for the production model. Inside the cabin, the concept is pared back and minimal. While AMG didn't directly confirm it, the yoke-style steering wheel is in development in combination with fly-by-wire steering, and could potentially make its first appearance on the production model. The digital set-up also looks to be pretty production-ready, with a combination of an 11.25-inch screen ahead of the driver and a 14-inch display in the centre angled towards the driver. With its new car, Mercedes-AMG might appear to be hitting a slightly stagnant place in the market that's already occupied by cars such as the Porsche Taycan and Lotus Emeya, but the project is about much more than an expensive four-door EV. The GT XX Concept is a mission statement for the next generation of EV technology that will eventually trickle down to benefit EV development in every corner of the new-car market.
