Henderson wipes away tear as ex-Liverpool skipper pays Jota tribute at Anfield
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has returned to Liverpool to pay an emotional tribute to his ex-teammate Diogo Jota after his tragic death in a car crash in Spain Jordan Henderson wiped away tears as he returned to Anfield with a tribute for former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota. The Portuguese forward died in a devastating car crash in Spain on Thursday night alongside his brother Andre Silva. The footballing world has been struck by grief since the news was confirmed, with kind messages being sent from all corners of the globe. Ex-Liverpool skipper Henderson - currently playing for Dutch side Ajax - decided to return to Merseyside to pay his respects. The midfielder laid a scarf and flowers within a growing memorial to Jota outside of Anfield. He was also spotted wiping away a tear as he attempted to come to terms with the heartbreaking loss of his former teammate. Henderson's gesture comes just a day after he had written a touching tribute on social media. He said: "I really can't believe what has happened today and all I can think about is Diogo and Andre's family. It's unimaginable the pain you all must be suffering. All of our prayers, love and support are with you now and forever. "Jots it was a pleasure to share a pitch with you but more importantly a friendship. All the laughs we had off the pitch and trying to find ways to wind milly up and get him fined, which we never could. "Taking pictures of me asleep on the bus travelling then sending them to me later. You always wanted to have a laugh and were a pleasure to be around. I know how much Rute and your family meant to you and I know you will always be looking down on them. "Thank you for everything you brought into this world, we will all miss you. Rest in peace along with your brother Andre. Love ya mate. YNWA." Henderson has joined many of his ex-teammates in paying tribute to Jota and his brother. Current captain Virgil van Dijk also penned some words, while making a vow to Jota's family. He said: "Man, I can't believe it, I don't wanna believe it. Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief. What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man. "You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. "My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family. "A champion forever, number 20 forever. It's been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it. We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it! Rest in perfect peace Diogo & André." Liverpool have already delayed their return for pre-season following the news of Jota's passing. They were originally set to return this Friday for initial testing but that has now been pushed back to Monday at the earliest.

Former Wimbledon champion finds out his nan has died after coming off court
British tennis star Neal Skupski found out his grandmother had died shortly after coming off court at Wimbledon. The Liverpool-born player was already coming to terms either the tragic death of footballer Diogo Jota when he learnt of his grandmother's passing. Skupski and men's doubles partner Joe Salisbury advanced to the second round of Wimbledon on Thursday with a 6-3 5-7 6-4 victory over fellow British pair Joshua Paris and Charles Broom. It was a difficult occasion for Skupski, who like the rest of the world was left shocked by the passing of Liverpool star Jota, who died in a car accident at the age of 28. Before his first-round match at the All England Club, the passionate Liverpool supporter posted: 'Tragic news. YNWA.' But the three-time Wimbledon champion was also rocked by the death of his grandmother, which he only learnt about shortly after his first-round match. In a press conference after the match which The i Paper attended, the three-time Wimbledon champion said: 'It's been a tough day for Liverpool fans. 'I found out this morning that Jota had passed away and then I've just found out my nan has just passed away, so it's been a very tough day.' Skupski described his grandmother Mary, 98, as a 'fighter' and insists she would have wanted him to give his all in his pursuit of a fourth Wimbledon title. 'Obviously I've only just found out, but walking onto the tennis court is only going to help me take my mind off it,' he said. 'It's something she'd have wanted me to do. I'll just go out on court and try and enjoy it as much as possible, not worry too much if I'm missing too many shots, there's more to life than missing a tennis shot. 'I'm glad I've had time to know it was coming, rather than just 'Boom' and she's died out of the blue. I've been able to come to terms she was coming to an end. 'It's part of life, it will be a tough one for my family tonight and the next few days but she would want me to be here. She'd be proud of me for what happened today, fighting through. 'What to say? What can anyone say at a time like this when the shock and the pain is so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words but I know I do not. 'All I have are feelings that I know so many people will share about a person and a player we loved dearly and a family we care so much about. 'My first thoughts are not those of a football manager. They are of a father, a son, a brother and an uncle and they belong to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva who have experienced such an unimaginable loss. 'My message to them is very clear – you will never walk alone. The players, the staff, the supporters of Liverpool Football Club are all with you and from what I have seen today, the same can be said of the wider family of football. 'My condolences go to Diogo's wife, Rute, their three beautiful children and to the parents of Diogo and Andre Silva. 'When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song. For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten. 'His name is Diogo.' 'It's Wimbledon now, it's my job. Being with Joe, it's something that she'd have wanted me to do, to fight. We're here, we want to win the whole thing but one match at a time.' Reports of Jota's death first emerged in Spain before confirmation of his tragic passing came in the form of statements from the Spanish authorities and Liverpool Football Club. 'You never think your heroes or sportsmen or people that you look up to… they're like invincible,' added Skupski, who was invited to Liverpool's training centre in 2023 after winning Wimbledon. 'It just shows that everyone's human. Things come at you and you just don't know what's around the corner. 'I met the whole team. I've spoke to some people today who are connected to Liverpool and they basically say he's not just an amazing footballer, but the person he was, he was incredible, so down to earth, very nice. 'A great finisher but also someone that kept the whole dressing room together. It's going to be a big loss, I'm sure they'll do something in his memory.' More Trending Skupski won the men's doubles title at Wimbledon in 2023 and the mixed doubles title in 2021 and 2022. He and his current doubles partner Salisbury were beaten in the final of last month's French Open. They continue their 2025 Wimbledon campaign with their second-round match on Saturday. Wimbledon has relaxed its strict all-white dress code to allow players to wear black armbands in tribute to Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who also died in the crash. 'Special player, a special guy, a true legend'

Diogo Jota's death: Dubai's official Liverpool supporters pay tribute to young star
The song You'll Never Walk Alone (YNWA) rings out at Anfield, English Premier League football club Liverpool's home ground, and wherever The Reds play. The song, from the 1945 musical Carousel, is the team's anthem, and holds and even deeper meaning for the club's faithful after the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy, in which 97 supporters lost their lives. And on Thursday, the iconic anthem, echoed outside Anfield once again, this time to honour Diogo Jota, who died in a tragic car crash. His brother Andre Silva too was killed in the crash. As fans paid tribute to the Portuguese star, who had got married just two weeks ago to his long-time girlfriend, over 7,000km away in Dubai, it was a sombre moment. Loyal Liverpool fans in Dubai were yet to come to terms with the tragic loss of a player who was snuffed out at just age 28. "Yes devastating news for us all. We are all deeply shocked," a member of the Official Liverpool Supporters Club Dubai (OLSC Dubai) told the Khaleej Times. Ever since the news broke, tributes have been pouring in across the supporters' club's social media platforms. "We've had so many tributes and condolences across our social media platforms, its truly heartbreaking," he said. Also known as the Dubai Reds, the supporters' club was formed back in 2006 and received official affiliation from Liverpool FC later that year. The Dubai Reds has more than 500 active and loyal members from different nationalities and cultures. With the fans still trying to cope with the untimely passing of one of their own, the supporters' club said they will plan a fitting tribute in due course. For now though, some of their members plan to place some some Dubai Reds memorabilia and flowers at Anfield. "One of our past members will be doing this on our behalf as he's back in the UK now permanently," he said. 'Family man' "It will take time for us all to take this in and decide on a fitting tribute but now is just the time to remember the player he was but, more importantly, what a family man he was. And our thoughts go out to his wife, his three children and, of course, his parents who have lost two sons in this awful tragedy. He joined in 20, he wore 20 and he was an integral part of bringing us number 20," the member said. Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves after impressing then Reds coach Jurgen Klopp, helped the team win a record-equalling 20th Premier League title. The footballing world, especially the English top flight, were united in grief, posting tributes to Jota, who had just won the Uefa Nations League with Portugal last month.
