Brittany Force Delivers Record Breaking Speeds During NHRA Run
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. 39-year-old Brittany Force reached 341.85 MPH during her NHRA Top Fuel semi-final run at Northwest National in Seattle. Daughter of the legendary John Force, Brittany is carving out her legacy after notching another impressive feat under her belt. She was going up against Doug Kalitta and delivered the fastest speed ever recorded in the 1,000-foot era. Force previously held the record for the highest speed reached, setting a speed of 341.59 MPH back in April. Race car drivers Brittany Force (L) and John Force arrive at the Yahoo! Photo by"Obviously, the highlight of our weekend was in the semifinals when we made a killer run and went even faster than our [previous] national record [341.59 mph], the fastest of all time," Force said after reaching the highest speeds on track ever. "It's really exciting for this whole team. We work really hard to turn on win lights and put the best numbers up on the board and we're hoping that record will hold for a while." Even though she reached those speeds, her time overall was just short of the record. She finished in 3.641 seconds in 2022, but this run in Seattle was done in 3.659 seconds. In total, Force owns five of the six fastest speeds ever recorded in Top Fuel, asserting her dominance in the race category. She is in a class of her own, having won two Top Fuel titles and broken records during her long career. Unfortunately, she fell short in the final after her car's oil pan pressure caused issues. The car shut down during her run and ultimately finished in second place. "Overall, it was a pretty solid outing for this team," Force added. "We were able to make our way to the final round but, unfortunately, came up short. Pan pressure automatically shut us off in the final. I had no power and was just coasting to the finish line and saw Shawn go around me." Still, her blistering speed required a high level of skill and some favorable track conditions to achieve it. The track at Pacific Raceways is situated at an elevation of only 308 feet above sea level, providing the circuit with air that is denser than the thinner air found at higher altitudes. Additionally, the temperatures were cool, considering the Pacific Northwest weather. Force's ability to handle such intense speeds is what makes her such an exceptional racing talent, and her current record might not be safe if she continues to race.

NCAA adding special one-time transfer window this summer
On Wednesday, the NCAA announced that they are opening a one-time transfer portal window this summer, from July 7 to August 5, for athletes that Division I programs have placed on a special 'Designated Student-Athletes' list. Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports reported that an athlete is eligible to be placed on a designated student-athlete list if he/she would have or had already been removed from the school's roster due to the new House-mandated roster limits, and was also an eligible member of the team during the 2024-25 season, and/or recruited and assured a 2025-26 roster spot by the program. So, some more confusing language from the NCAA around the already confusing transfer portal rules, but this could be another opportunity for players to move around the league if they aren't happy with their position on their current roster. Yahoo! Sports analyst ranks Chiefs Patrick Mahomes as the top QB going into 2025
The Kansas City Chiefs are once again considered contenders heading into the 2025 season, and Patrick Mahomes remains a key player in the franchise's success. Following an uncharacteristic 2024 season that saw the two-time league MVP not make the Pro Bowl, Mahomes was still selected as the top quarterback going into 2025 by Yahoo! Sports. NFL analyst Nate Tice made the call to rank Mahomes over reigning league MVP Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson. The Chiefs won the AFC Championship game for the third consecutive season and were a victory away from completing the first Super Bowl three-peat in NFL history. Mahomes finished 2024 with 3,928 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Last season was his first as a starter without 4,000 passing yards. The Chiefs' offense has been vocal throughout offseason workouts about being more explosive and scoring big points in 2025. Mahomes will likely see a resurgent performance this season with the potential for a third career MVP award.

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua to discuss college athletics with President Trump
Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua to discuss college athletics with President Trump Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey are reportedly meeting with President Donald Trump Sunday to discuss the future of college athletics. According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports, Bevacqua and Sankey are traveling to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster to have a round with the 47th President, who is interested in discussing the college sports industry's future while on the course. This reported meeting comes at a time when the state of college athletics has never been more in flux. The House vs. NCAA settlement was finally finalized this past Friday evening, clearing a path for future revenue-sharing payments to be made directly to student-athletes for the very first time, further professionalizing college athletics. It allows for the establishment of an NIL Go Clearinghouse, which would have to approve NIL payments of more than $600 to student-athletes beginning this summer. Trump's interest in college athletics is nothing new. Previously he was working on a college sports commission that reportedly was going to be co-chaired by former Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Certainly there is never a dull day in the business of college athletics. Pope Leo XIV's impact on the college basketball betting market is real with Villanova wagers surging

Sports bettors are never afraid to look to the heavens for help. Whether it be a quick prayer during crunch time or a promise that you'll go to church on Sunday if you get the cover, bettors have tried every trick in the good book to get to the window. But this is a new one. Apparently, sports bettors around the country are betting that the newly elected pope will bring good luck to his alma mater. According to a report from Ben Fawkes of Yahoo! Sports, money came pouring in on Villanova to win the 2025-26 national championship in the 24 hours after the Papal Conclave elected Robert Francis Prevost to become the next pope. Pope Leo XIV makes his first address to the College of Cardinals at the Synod Hall on May 10, 2025 in Vatican City, Vatican. Getty Images Before he became Pope Leo XIV, Prevost was a Villanova Wildcat, graduating in 1977. That was enough of a sign for the betting public, who wasted no time getting down on Villanova to cut down the nets in 11 months. Pope Leo XIV graduated from Villanova in 1977. REUTERS According to the report, Villanova accounted for less than 1 percent of all bets to win the 2025-26 national championship at BetMGM. In the ensuing 24 hours, that number jumped up to 22 percent. Villanova is 80/1 to win the title at BetMGM. Betting on College Basketball? It remains to be seen if bettors have been bold enough to back Prevost's favorite baseball team, the Chicago White Sox, in the same fashion. Footage has emerged of the future pope in the stands at Game 1 of the 2005 World Series, which the White Sox eventually won in a four-game sweep over the Houston Astros. Chicago is 11-28 on the season and is 500/1 to win the 2025 World Series at BetMGM. Move over, Mike Francesa, there is a new sports pope in town.
