Yainer Diaz, Cam Smith belt homers as Astros top Cubs

June 28 - Yainer Diaz and Cam Smith slugged three-run home runs, and Brandon Walter earned his first career victory as the Houston Astros topped the Chicago Cubs 7-4 on Friday in the opener of a three-game interleague series. The Astros stretched their winning streak to five games with their early power display against Cubs right-hander Cade Horton (3-2). Houston is 18-4 over its last 22 home games and is riding a nine-game home winning streak. Horton sidestepped danger in the first and second innings, thanks largely to the handiwork of corner outfielders Kyle Tucker and Ian Happ. Tucker, returning to Houston after being traded by the Astros to the Cubs during the offseason, erased Isaac Paredes at the plate to cap the first after fielding Jake Meyers' single and firing an accurate throw to catcher Carson Kelly. Paredes, part of the three-player haul the Astros received for Tucker, smacked a sinking line drive with the bases loaded and two outs in the second that Happ snagged to snuff that threat. But Houston loaded the bases against Horton with no outs in the third and finally broke through. Victor Caratini lofted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Jose Altuve and provided the Astros a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Diaz drilled a first-pitch sweeper to left-center field, and his 10th home run covered 377 feet and extended the Houston lead to 4-0. An inning later, Smith, the second position player the Cubs shipped to Houston in the Tucker transaction, delivered. Smith followed one-out singles from Paredes (2-for-5) and Altuve with his sixth home run. He bashed a first-pitch fastball 398 feet to left-center that upped the lead to 7-0. Smith finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and three RBIs in his first meeting against his former organization. Horton allowed seven runs on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts over four innings. Walter (1-1) worked around a leadoff triple from Dansby Swanson in the second and surrendered a homer to Nico Hoerner in the fifth. Walter allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts over six innings. Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw followed his two-run double in the seventh inning with an RBI double in the ninth, forcing Houston to summon closer Josh Hader, who recorded the final out in the ninth for his 22nd save. Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena, hit by a pitch in the second inning, later departed with left rib soreness. --Field Level Media

Astros pitcher confronts Angels shortstop after hitting him with pitch, sparking bench-clearing scene

After Houston Astros starting pitcher Hunter Brown hit Los Angeles Angels' shortstop Zach Neto with a pitch, tempers flared in the third inning of the Astros' 3-2 extra-innings win Friday night at Angel Stadium. The Astros were up 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning with a runner on second base and Neto up to bat. Brown was up 0-1 in the count, and Brown's 95 mph sinker ran in on Neto, hitting the Angels shortstop in the hand. Neto took exception and immediately turned toward Brown and started yelling. Brown did not back down from Neto and started walking toward Neto and barking at the Angels shortstop as the home plate umpire stepped in front of Neto to try and defuse the situation. As Brown started toward Neto, both teams' dugouts and bullpens emptied to join the fray. Astros catcher Yainer Diaz held Brown back as the benches emptied. As Brown was being pulled away from the pile, he continued to yell toward Angels players who came off the bench. Order was eventually restored. There were no punches or ejections, and the game carried on. Neto remained in the game after being hit by the pitch. Brown ended up with a no-decision in the game after pitching five innings and yielding just one run on two hits. He struck out four batters. The Astros scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the 10th inning. The Astros' Mauricio Dubón scored on a pitch thrown behind Astros' third baseman Isaac Paredes. The Astros (44-32) and Angels (36-39) play again at 9:38 p.m. ET Saturday. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Bryan Abreu struck out three in a scoreless eighth for the Astros. Brown plunked Byron Buxton on the left elbow to start the sixth before walking Trevor Larnach. But he retired the next three batters, with two strikeouts to escape the jam. Advertisement Buxton remained in the game for the bottom of the inning but was replaced in center field by Harrison Bader in the bottom of the seventh. The team said he had left because of a bruised left elbow. Key moment Smith's single to win it. Key stat Brown has a 1.88 ERA, which ranks second in the American League. Up next Minnesota RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (2-3, 5.74 ERA) opposes LHP Brandon Walter (0-0, 1.64) when the series concludes Sunday. ___ AP MLB:
