LPGA player misses major cut after slow play penalty
LONDON: China's Yan Liu was hovering around the cut line when she was assessed a two- stroke penalty for slow play during the second round of the Evian Championship on Friday. Liu, who started her round on the back nine at the Evian Resort Golf Club, was playing the seventh hole when she was assessed the penalty, according to Golf Digest. She went on to double bogey the par-5 and followed it up with another bogey. Liu rebounded to birdie her final hole but missed the cut at the fourth major of the year by three shots. The penalty is part of the LPGA's attempt to improve pace-of-play issues that have been heavily criticized by several of the tour's marquee players. The LPGA updated its pace-of-play policy in February, implementing a fine for a player who is 1-5 seconds over the allotted time limit, a one-stroke penalty for being 6-15 seconds over and a two-stroke penalty for a player taking more than 16 seconds over the time limit. Liu is the second player to be assessed a two-shot penalty, joining Chisato Iwai, who during the Black Desert Championship in May was the first player to be handed a two-stroke penalty. In all, there have been four slow-play penalties since the new policy was issued, according to Golf Digest. Liu entered the Evian Championship in France ranked 107th in the Rolex Women's World Rankings. However, she has now missed five of her past six cuts.--REUTERS

Two-shot penalty handed out for slow play at Evian Championship
Since the LPGA introduced its new pace-of-play policy earlier this year, there have been four penalties assessed. The most recent instance came Friday at the Amundi Evian Championship, where China's Yan Liu was given a two-shot penalty for slow play on the par-5 seventh hole, her 16th of the day. Per Liu's playing competitor, Andrea Lee, their group was on the clock for the last six holes. Liu, whose par was turned into a double bogey, went on to finish bogey-birdie and missed the cut by three shots at 5 over. The two-shot penalty marks the second such penalty since the new policy was rolled out at the Ford Championship in March. Chisato Iwai was docked two shots for slow play at the Black Desert Championship in May. Iwai would miss that cut by two shots. Two one-shot penalties have also been handed out.

LPGA officials dish out another two-stroke slow play penalty at Amundi Evian Championship
For a second time this year, LPGA officials have dished out a two-stroke penalty for slow play. Only this one came at a major championship. China's Yan Liu received the penalty on the seventh hole (her 16th of the day) of the Amundi Evian Championship, resulting in a double bogey on the par 5. Liu, who was informed of the penalty while on the course, finished bogey/birdie on her last two holes to shoot 75. She ultimately finished the championship at 5 over, missing the cut by three. Lui played alongside Andrea Lee and Mi Hyang Lee on Friday. Lee, who has been contending all week, noted in her post-round interview that the group was on the clock the last six holes. "I felt a little bit rushed," said Lee. The LPGA has handed out four slow-play penalties since the new pace-of-play policy was put in place at the Ford Championship in March. Two of those were one-stroke penalties and two were two strokes. In May, Rookie Chisato Iwai was assessed a two-stroke penalty on the eighth hole Friday of the Black Desert Championship in Utah and went on to miss the cut by two. In February, the tour released a new Pace of Play Policy that introduced a one-shot penalty.

Yan Liu makes albatross, hangs onto lead at Chevron Championship
THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Yan Liu had an albatross to offset three front-nine bogeys and rebounded from a late bogey for an even-par 72 and a one-stroke lead over four players Friday in the Chevron Championship, the first women's major tournament of the year. Top-ranked Nelly Korda rallied late in the afternoon to make the cut in her title defense, following an opening 77 with a 68. She won last year at The Club at Carlton Woods for the last of her record-tying five straight victories. Advertisement She used a different putter Friday. 'I putted for an hour and a half after the round yesterday, so just needed something different,' Korda said. 'Sometimes that's all you need.' Fog delayed the start of play, with nine players unable to finish the round because of darkness. Liu, the 27-year-old Chinese player who shared the first-round lead with Haeran Ryu after a 65, admitted she would feel some pressure Saturday. 'I think, definitely, I will feel a little bit, because, well, this is major,' Liu said. 'I know the course is going to be harder, harder, so I think I just stay patient, calm because I'm very emotional person.' Advertisement Hyo Joo Kim (71) was a stroke back with Lindy Duncan (66), Sarah Schmelzel (68) and Mao Saigo (68). Kim won the Ford Championship a month ago in Arizona for her seventh LPGA Tour title, while the other four players at the top of the leaderboard are winless. Liu holed her 175-yard second shot on the 505-yard, downwind par-5 eighth with a 7-iron for the albatross. 'I saw the ball how to go in, so that's really cool thing,' Liu said. 'But I think they don't have video for that hole. Little sad.' Liu then bogeyed No. 9 and opened the back nine with seven pars. She dropped into a six-way tied for the lead with a bogey on the par-3 17th. Her tee shot hopped left into fluffy Bermuda rough, she chunked her second to the fringe and missed a 15-foot par try. Advertisement She got the stroke back with a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th, finishing about an hour before sunset. 'Last hole, is my first birdie today,' Liu said. 'I'm glad I made it. Ryu had a 74 to fall two strokes back in a group with Angel Yin (70) , Manon De Roey (71) and Hye-Jin Choi (71). Weiwei Zhang also was 5 under with three holes left when play was suspended. Lexi Thompson was 4 under, following an opening 73 with a 67. The 30-year-old Florida player retired from full-time play at the end of last season. 'I'm still practicing and training,' Thompson said. 'I love working out. I'm still striving to be better for when I do tee it up because every time I tee it up I still want to win. It's not like I'm just going out here to show face. I'm still very competitive, but just trying to enjoy the few times I will play.' She won the 2014 event — then the Kraft Nabisco Championship — at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, California.

Yan Liu played even par for the day as she made three bogeys and a rare albatross on the front nine. On the back nine Liu dropped a bogey on the 17th and picked a birdie on the 18th. Lindy Duncan moved up 32 places with a round of 5 under par to sit at tied second alongside Sarah Schmelzel, Mao Saigo and Hyo Joo Kim. She won last year at The Club at Carlton Woods for the last of her record-tying five straight victories. Aditi had two birdies and four bogeys. She started her round with bogeys on the first and second holes and then a birdie on the eighth hole. On the back nine she had a bogey on the 11th and 13th holes and a birdie on the 12th hole for a total of 74.
