Chisholm rallies Yankees to 4-2 win as New York takes 2 of 3 from Orioles
NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a go-ahead, two-run double off the right-center field wall in a three-run eighth inning, leading the New York Yankees over the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 Sunday. New York won its second straight after losing seven of its previous eight games. Advertisement A day after the Orioles were held hitless for seven innings by Clarke Schmidt, Jackson Holliday singled on Will Warren's first pitch, setting up a two-run first that included Ryan O'Hearn's run-scoring single and Colton Cowser's RBI double. Orioles backup catcher Maverick Handley left after being knocked over in the second during a collision at the plate with Chisholm, who scored as his shoes came off on DJ LeMahieu's single against Dean Kremer. Ben Rice singled off Bryan Baker (3-2) leading off the eighth and Giancarlo Stanton's single put runners at the corners. Worth the wait: Sonny Gray's 1-hitter is his first complete game in 8 years
CLEVELAND (AP) — Sonny Gray didn't know if he would throw a complete game again. On Friday night, he did that and was one pitch away from a no-hitter. Gray allowed only one hit and struck out a season-high 11 in St. Louis' 5-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Advertisement It is his seventh complete game, but first since 2017 with the Yankees. It was also the fifth shutout in Gray's 13-year big-league career, with the last coming when he was with the Athletics in 2015. 'I did it a lot earlier in my career and it's been a while,' Gray said. 'You don't know if you would be able to do it, especially the way the games kind of went, and especially with me like I don't throw over 100 pitches very often.' The right-hander, who improved to 8-2 on the season, needed only 89 pitches against the Guardians. It is the first time since 2021 (Atlanta's Max Fried vs. Baltimore) that a pitcher has had a complete-game shutout and thrown less than 90 pitches. Gray's most taxing inning was the third, when he had 12 pitches. He had two innings where he threw eight or fewer pitches. Advertisement Gray's only bad pitch came with two outs in the fifth inning, when Nolan Jones had a base hit to right field on a sweeper. 'I knew the innings were kind of moving right along. I did know that I was perfect through that long. I made a good pitch there when the guy got the hit, so I was fine with that," Gray said. 'When I was going out for the ninth it felt like just another inning, which was nice.' Gray had 19 first-pitch strikes to the 28 batters he faced and of his 66 strikes, 16 were swings and misses. He retired 15 of Cleveland's hitters on three pitches or fewer, including six on the first pitch. 'When you keep getting 0-1, the other team feels pressure of that. I think that helped in our benefit of just being able to attack these guys and get the quick outs,' said catcher Pedro Pagés, who got the Cardinals on the board with a home run to lead off the third inning. Advertisement Gray also stymied Cleveland with a familiar face in the Guardians' dugout. Manager Stephen Vogt caught Gray for 45 games, more than any other catcher in Gray's career. 'Whatever he wanted, he had everything working," Vogt said. "The only pitch he left in the strike zone was when Nolan got the base hit. That was an unbelievable performance by Sonny.' Gray and Vogt were roommates in the minors in the Athletics' system, and still share a close bond and mutual respect. 'Through my warmup pitches before the first inning, I had some time and kind of looked up. I know where Vogty stands, and he was kind of looking at me. So I was kind of looking at him and we kind of stared at each other for a second, and I gave him a little head nod," Gray said. "We have so many memories together. Gray's complete game, 11 strikeouts power Cardinals past Guardians 5-0
CLEVELAND (AP) — Sonny Gray allowed only one hit and struck out a season-high 11 for his first complete game since 2017 as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cleveland Guardians 5-0 on Friday night. Alec Burleson and Pedro Pagés homered, and Nolan Arenado had a pair of RBIs for the Cardinals, who bounced back after being shut out in their previous two games. It is the seventh complete game of Gray's 13-year career and the 18th in the majors this season. It is also his fourth career shutout and first since 2015 when he was with the Athletics. Gray — who threw 89 pitches, including 66 strikes — had double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season and 20th in his career. Pagés and Burleson lined home runs off Cleveland starter Luis Ortiz (4-9) in the third inning. Pagés drove an elevated sinker over the left-field wall to lead off the frame and snap a 24-inning string where the Cardinals had not scored a run. Burleson connected for a two-run shot with two outs. The Guardians were blanked for the second straight game. YANKEES 3, ATHLETICS 0 NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered on the first pitch he saw in his 500th game and New York beat the Athletics to reach the halfway point of the season. Chisholm hit his fifth homer in 21 games since returning from an oblique injury on June 3 and gave the Yankees the lead in the second by driving a cutter from A's starter Mitch Spence (2-3) to the second deck in right field. As he rounded third, the third baseman shrugged his shoulders and did a little shuffle before crossing the plate. Chisholm has 89 homers and 109 stolen bases since debuting with the Miami Marlins on September 1, 2020. The only other players with as many homers and stolen bases through 500 career games are Eric Davis (107, homers, 190 stolen bases) and former Yankee Alfonso Soriano (97 homers, 121 RBIs Cody Bellinger and DJ LeMahieu hit RBI singles as the Yankees reached the halfway point at 47-34, putting them on a 94-win pace. The Yankees were 52-29 at the halfway point last season when they finished with 94 wins and reached the World Series for the first time since 2009. Keller (2-10) allowed one run and five hits to win for the first time since his first start of the season on March 28 at Miami. It was the longest single-season winless streak in franchise history. Reynolds' homer off Blake Tidwell, who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, came in the sixth inning and traveled 402 feet into the right-field stands, extending the Pirates' lead to 8-1. Juan Soto accounted for the Mets' run with his 20th home run in the fourth inning. Mets left-hander David Peterson (5-4) had his second straight rough start, allowing five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Last Sunday, Peterson gave up five runs in four innings at Philadelphia. REDS 8, PADRES 1 CINCINNATI (AP) — Nick Martinez took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning before allowing pinch-hitter Elias Díaz's double and Spencer Steer hit three home runs, leading Cincinnati over San Diego. Martinez (5-8) walked his third batter, Jackson Merrill, on a low full-count sinker, then retired 22 consecutive hitters before walking rookie Trenton Brooks starting the ninth. Díaz then drove an 0-1 changeup off the base of the wall in left-center on Martinez's 112th and final pitch, which tied his career high. A 34-year-old right-hander, Martinez struck out six as the Reds won for the fourth time in five games. He also threw 112 pitches for Texas against Boston on May 28, 2015. Brooks Lee drove in a pair of runs for the Twins. Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Twins took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Matt Wallner and Lee, then made it 2-0 an inning later on Buxton's long homer to left. The Twins made it 3-0 in the sixth. The Orioles were on the wrong end of a similar comeback against Tampa Bay just nine days earlier, when the Rays rallied from down 8-0 to beat Baltimore 12-8. Tampa Bay opened the scoring with six runs in the second. Jonathan Aranda, Josh Lowe and Brandon Lowe homered in that inning, but Rays starter Ryan Pepiot couldn't make it through the bottom half. The Orioles scored four runs in the second and one in the third. With Tampa Bay up 7-6 in the sixth, Sanchez hit a two-run shot. Colton Cowser's third double of the game brought home another run in the sixth. Sanchez then followed with his third hit — a two-run single that made it 11-7. GIANTS 3, WHITE SOX 1 CHICAGO (AP) — Patrick Bailey hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the sixth inning and San Francisco ended a three-game skid with a win over Chicago. Landon Roupp (6-5) won his second straight start and third out of his last four after giving up an unearned run and seven hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in 5 1/3 innings. Bailey laced the decisive hit down the right-field line off reliever Tyler Alexander (4-8) to break a 1-all tie. Camilo Doval worked the ninth for his 13th save. ASTROS 7, CUBS 4 HOUSTON (AP) — Cam Smith hit a three-run homer in his first game against the Cubs since being traded to Houston and Brandon Walter threw six solid innings in his first MLB victory as the Astros beat Chicago. Yainer Diaz added a three-run homer as AL West-leading Houston extended its winning streak to five games. The Astros scored four runs in the third off Cubs starter Cade Horton (3-2), with Jose Altuve scoring on a sacrifice fly by Victor Caratini before Diaz capped the inning with his 377-foot shot to left-center. Chisholm homers in 500th regular season game, has third-most homers and steals in first 500 games
NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. appeared in his 500th game and joined some select company. Chisholm homered into the second deck in right field Friday night to give the Yankees the lead in their 3-0 victory over the Athletics and giving him 89 career homers to go with 109 steals. Chisholm's homer off Mitch Spence in the second inning gave him the third-most homers and steals within the first 500 career games, trailing Eric Davis (107 homers, 190 steals) and former Yankee Alfonso Soriano (97 homers, 121 steals). Davis played his 500th game on Sept. 15, 1988, for the Cincinnati Reds. He finished his career in 2001 as a member of the San Francisco Giants with career totals of 282 homers, 349 steals in 1,626 games. 'That's pretty cool,' Chisholm said. 'I didn't know that. I just be out there playing and having fun but the first time I met Eric Davis, he's one of the favorite players I watched when I was a kid,' Chisholm said. 'So like watching his highlights and watching the way he plays, I feel like Byron Buxton is the closest person to him and watching Byron is just like watching E.D. (Eric Davis).' Soriano played his 500th game on Sept. 27, 2003, during his penultimate regular-season contest with the Yankees before being traded to Texas in the offseason for Alex Rodriguez. Soriano finished his career in 2014 with the Yankees with totals of 412 homers and 289 steals in 1,975 games. 'I got to meet Alfonso in Miami,' Chisholm said. 'I played with his little cousin. So for me talking about Alfonso and Eric and watching them as kids, those were the guys that I was kind of compared to in my swings even though (I'm) like small, (have) some power and some speed but yeah it's kind of sick to have same accomplishments.' After hitting Spence's cutter, Chisholm shrugged his shoulders as he rounded third and did a little shuffle before crossing the plate. Chisholm debuted Sept. 1, 2020, for the Miami Marlins and has 23 homers and 28 steals in 97 games for the Yankees, who acquired him last July 27 and moved him to third base. Chisholm's homer marked the 12th time in his career he went deep in consecutive games. Marcus Stroman to return to Yankees' rotation after missing 2 1/2 months with knee injury
NEW YORK (AP) — Marcus Stroman will be activated by the New York Yankees to start on Sunday after missing 2 1/2 months with left knee inflammation. Stroman threw a side session Friday and manager Aaron Boone made the announcement after the Yankees' beat the Athletics 3-0 in a series opener. Advertisement 'We wanted to see him today, make sure he's in a good spot, good with his 'pen and everything,' Boone said. 'So just checking the boxes.' Stroman has not pitched for the Yankees since allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning against the San Francisco Giants on April 11 when he threw 46 pitches in a steady rain. He was placed on the 15-day injured list the next day with what Boone hoped at the time would be a short-term absence. On May 9, Stroman experienced discomfort in his knee after throwing a batting practice session in Tampa, Florida. He did not begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment until June 11. In three rehab appearances with Double-A Somerset, Stroman was 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA. He made his final rehab start on Wednesday and allowed five runs, 10 hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers' Erie Seawolves of the Eastern League. Advertisement The Yankees placed No. 5 starter Ryan Yarbrough on the injured list Sunday with a strained right oblique and started Allan Winans on Monday in Cincinnati. Stroman turned 34 on May 1 and is in the second season of a two-year contract guaranteeing $37 million. The right-hander's deal includes a $16 million conditional player option for 2026 that could be exercised if he pitches in at least 140 innings this year. Last season, Stroman was 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 29 starts and one relief appearance over 154 2/3 innings, his most since 2021 with the Mets.
