Aaron Judge ahead of record-breaking home run pace to put him in rare Yankees company

Try it free For the first Yankees win in six games, Aaron Judge, as expected, played an important role. Judge hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-0 in their eventual 6-4 victory at Citi Field as Max Fried worked to keep the Mets offense at bay. Judge blasted it on the first pitch for a career-high 11th time this season, sending an 83-mph changeup on the outside corner sailing 388 feet to left-center field. It was his 33rd home run of the season, coming in the Yankees' 90th game. He hit 31 through the first 90 games when he broke the AL home run record in 2022. Aaron Judge hits a home run during the Yankees-Mets game on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. Robert Sabo for NY Post Judge joins Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris as the only Yankees to hit 33 or more home runs in the first 90 games of a season. However, the two-time MVP didn't know it was going out right off the bat. 'I knew it was going to be a hit, I just didn't know where it was going,' Judge said after the Yankees won the Subway Series finale on Sunday. 'Cannot really sit there and think about what's going to happen. Once you hit it, your job is to be a base runner and make the best read. I was happy it went over so we could add two more runs there. Yeah, just tried to put a good swing on it.' Aaron Judge celebrates during the Yankees-Mets game on Sunday afternoon. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Judge also delivered in a timely defensive play in the bottom of the sixth inning. After the Mets added two more runs, Starling Marte was at the plate with two outs and the game-tying runner on third base and the Yankees leading 5-4. Marte, who went 3-for-5 in the matinee game, roped a ball to right field in front of Judge, who hustled and dove to make the catch for the final out of the frame, keeping the Yankees ahead. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS 'That was another big play in the course of the game,' manager Aaron Boone said following the win. 'It seemed like [they were] pressuring us there late from the time they scored in the fifth inning, more in the sixth, and then pressuring us. … But yeah, I mean, those are a handful of plays.' Following his home run, the six-time All-Star also knocked in Paul Goldschmidt on a sacrifice fly to give the Yankees more wiggle room with a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning. He ended the day with a home run and three RBIs, and just one strikeout in the ninth inning. As the Yankees have gone through a 6-22 downward spiral prior to Sunday, Judge has remained optimistic and has been consistent at the plate. Across that 28-game span, he has hit .290 with a 1.093 OPS, 11 home runs and 21 RBIs.

Yankees' Max Fried, Jazz Chisholm join Aaron Judge as All-Stars

Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free Aaron Judge won't be alone representing the Yankees in Atlanta. Following the Yankees' 6-4 victory over the Mets in the finale of the second Subway Series on Sunday at Citi Field, Max Fried and Jazz Chisholm Jr. were selected for the 2025 All-Star Game on July 15. It will be Fried's third All-Star nod and Chisholm's second. 'It's been incredible what Max has done for us. Coming over here, coming into a big market and signing a big deal as a free agent, it's always tough,' said Judge, who was previously named the starting right fielder after the opening round of voting. 'A lot of pressure and a lot of expectations. I think he definitely exceeded a lot of guys' expectations. He's been a huge piece to the success we've had all season, being our ace and being the front line of this pitching staff. And then what Jazz has been doing all year, hitting the ball in the open field and making some great plays. They both deserve it and hopefully we can grab a couple more guys.' Jazz Chisholm Jr. rounds the bases during the Yankees-Mets game on July 5, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post For the Yankees ace, it will be a homecoming weekend as he spent the first eight years of his career with the Braves. As to whether it will mean more to him for that reason, Fried said he isn't sure. 'I don't really know to be honest, it's all new,' he said after his five-inning outing on Sunday. 'I wasn't really looking too much ahead because I had this start to really worry about. But, I'm sure over the next couple of days, the next week, it will be able to sink in a little bit more. … I think it will be cool to see some familiar faces and be in the stadium that I was in the first part of my career.' Fried has given the Yankees stability when they have needed it most, especially after Gerrit Cole was lost for the season during spring training. He owns a 2.27 ERA and has recorded 11 wins in his 19 starts. Max Fried looks on during the Yankees-Mets game on July 6, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST The lefty isn't sure if he will pitch in the game, depending on the Yankees schedule, and things may be up in the air for Chisholm as well. The infielder sat out of Sunday's game for what he called a 'super sore' shoulder, which was taped up prior to the game. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS He said he has been dealing with it for about three weeks and it sparked from a throw across the diamond that Chisholm whipped 'as hard as I could.' It later ached, yet he believed he would be fine. While he didn't use it as an excuse, over the past four games Chisholm made three throwing errors from third base. Manager Aaron Boone didn't seem concerned on Sunday, saying he was 'a little beat up.' When healthy, Chisholm has been productive at the plate for the Yankees, hitting .245 with 15 home runs, 38 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 59 games.

Yankees voice Michael Kay claps back at ‘fawning fanboy' Blue Jays broadcaster after broom taunt

Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free After being taunted with a broom, Michael Kay dropped a hammer. Kay, the Yankees' play-by-play voice on YES Network and a talk-show host on ESPN radio, reacted Sunday to being called out by Jamie Campbell of Rogers Sportsnet in Toronto after the Blue Jays swept a four-game series from the spiraling Yankees to overtake first place in the AL East. Campbell waved a broom and said, 'I can think of a certain Yankees broadcaster, in fact, who is going to have to go on his show and admit that the Blue Jays are a first-place team because the standings prove it.' So, how did Kay respond? Michael Kay on the YES Network Yankees pregame show on July 6, 2025. YES Network Jamie Campbell (l.) had some words for Michael Kay after the Blue Jays swept the Yankees on Thursday. Sportsnet 'What I would say to Jamie is I can easily say the Blue Jays are a first-place team because I'm not a fawning fanboy. I'm a broadcaster,' Kay said during his Sunday Conversation with Nancy Newman before the Yankees-Mets series finale at Citi Field. 'And the bottom line is they are, in fact, a first-place team.' Kay wasn't done. Not by a longshot. Not with about half of the season remaining. 'Imagine if (YES Network studio host) Jack Curry was waving a broom on the Yankees postgame show,' Kay said. 'He would probably be called into the office and shortly fired after that. 'Now, I love Toronto. It is a cosmopolitan city. It is one of the greatest cities in the world, for me. You're waving a broom on a postgame show, you are turning it into Mayberry RFD. I just don't get it. I don't understand it. You should be proud of the fact you are in first place. 'And one final thing: You shouldn't hang on the rim three minutes into the third quarter of a basketball game. Feel good about sweeping the Yankees. Feel good about winning all these games in a row. Feel good about being in first place. But to hang on the rim this early? Let's hang on the rim in October. That's when you hang on the rim.' The back-and-forth started with comments that Kay on Wednesday during the middle of the fates-turning Yankees-Blue Jays series. He cited run differential as a reason that the Yankees are a better team than the Blue Jays. 'The Blue Jays are not a first-place team, I'm sorry,' Kay said, via Awful Announcing. 'If you look at the run differential, the Yankees' run differential is +105. The Blue Jays … they're +4. Do you realize, they should be a .500 team because of a +4 run differential? And the Yankees should have at least four or five more wins with a +105 run differential. They're not playing great baseball. I'm sorry, they're not.' Those numbers have changed as the Blue Jays have kept winning and the Yankees have kept losing. The Yankees are back in Toronto on July 21.
