Aaron Judge ahead of record-breaking home run pace to put him in rare Yankees company

Judge hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-0 in their eventual 6-4 victory at Citi Field as Max Fried worked to keep the Mets offense at bay. Judge blasted it on the first pitch for a career-high 11th time this season, sending an 83-mph changeup on the outside corner sailing 388 feet to left-center field. It was his 33rd home run of the season, coming in the Yankees' 90th game. He hit 31 through the first 90 games when he broke the AL home run record in 2022. After the Mets added two more runs, Starling Marte was at the plate with two outs and the game-tying runner on third base and the Yankees leading 5-4. Marte, who went 3-for-5 in the matinee game, roped a ball to right field in front of Judge, who hustled and dove to make the catch for the final out of the frame, keeping the Yankees ahead. 'It seemed like [they were] pressuring us there late from the time they scored in the fifth inning, more in the sixth, and then pressuring us. … But yeah, I mean, those are a handful of plays.' Following his home run, the six-time All-Star also knocked in Paul Goldschmidt on a sacrifice fly to give the Yankees more wiggle room with a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning. He ended the day with a home run and three RBIs, and just one strikeout in the ninth inning. As the Yankees have gone through a 6-22 downward spiral prior to Sunday, Judge has remained optimistic and has been consistent at the plate. As to whether it will mean more to him for that reason, Fried said he isn't sure. 'I don't really know to be honest, it's all new,' he said after his five-inning outing on Sunday. 'I wasn't really looking too much ahead because I had this start to really worry about. But, I'm sure over the next couple of days, the next week, it will be able to sink in a little bit more. … I think it will be cool to see some familiar faces and be in the stadium that I was in the first part of my career.' The infielder sat out of Sunday's game for what he called a 'super sore' shoulder, which was taped up prior to the game. It later ached, yet he believed he would be fine. While he didn't use it as an excuse, over the past four games Chisholm made three throwing errors from third base. Manager Aaron Boone didn't seem concerned on Sunday, saying he was 'a little beat up.' When healthy, Chisholm has been productive at the plate for the Yankees, hitting .245 with 15 home runs, 38 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 59 games.

Kay, the Yankees' play-by-play voice on YES Network and a talk-show host on ESPN radio, reacted Sunday to being called out by Jamie Campbell of Rogers Sportsnet in Toronto after the Blue Jays swept a four-game series from the spiraling Yankees to overtake first place in the AL East. Campbell waved a broom and said, 'I can think of a certain Yankees broadcaster, in fact, who is going to have to go on his show and admit that the Blue Jays are a first-place team because the standings prove it.' The back-and-forth started with comments that Kay on Wednesday during the middle of the fates-turning Yankees-Blue Jays series. He cited run differential as a reason that the Yankees are a better team than the Blue Jays. 'The Blue Jays are not a first-place team, I'm sorry,' Kay said, via Awful Announcing. 'If you look at the run differential, the Yankees' run differential is +105. The Blue Jays … they're +4. Do you realize, they should be a .500 team because of a +4 run differential? And the Yankees should have at least four or five more wins with a +105 run differential. They're not playing great baseball. I'm sorry, they're not.' Those numbers have changed as the Blue Jays have kept winning and the Yankees have kept losing. The Yankees are back in Toronto on July 21.
