Rs 21cr worth paddy missing from two mills

Peddapalli: Shocking facts were revealed when State task force officials seized paddy being transported in five trucks while conducting inspections at two mills in Sultanabad in the district. A rice mill was allocated 80,966 quintals of grain purchased by the government in the Yasangi season of 2023-24. While 35,000 quintals of rice had to be returned to the government, only 10,000 quintals of rice was provided. While the mill should have 64,922 quintals of grain, only 3,266 quintals of grain were available during the officials' inspections. It was revealed that the mill management sold the paddy purchased by the government as there is a shortage of 61,653.57 quintals of paddy. Another mill, which was allocated 31,060 quintals of paddy during the Yasangi season, was supposed to provide 21,190 quintals of rice to the government; only 5,151 quintals of rice were provided. While 23,500 quintals of paddy were supposed to be in the mill, the real scam was exposed when the officials checked and found only 10,880.14 quintals of paddy. In total, 72,533.71 quintals of paddy went missing in these two mills. Officials said that its value is around Rs 21,71,36,972. According to sources, at almost every rice mill paddy is missing. There are manysuspicions about the re-allocation of large amounts of paddy this time to rice millers who did not convert the awarded paddy allotted in the Yasangi and Vanakalam seasons into rice. The officials, allegedly, colluded with millers and evaded the terms and conditions. Unless the scam is revealed by the raids of the task force officials, the local authorities might not bring this scam to light, which is proof that they colluded with millers. It is reported that a rice miller who claims to be a community gentleman in Peddapalli district alone sold more than Rs 150 crore paddy. If the state-level civil supply officials conduct raids on the rice mills in Peddapalli district and conduct a thorough investigation, there is a possibility that the scam of Rs 1,000 crores will be exposed.

Plans afoot to resume SLBC tunnel works

Hyderabad: The Telangana government is all set to resume tunnelling operations in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC), where a cave-in had resulted in the death of eight workers in February this year. The government has roped in NGRI (National Geophysical Research Institute) and Geological Survey of India (GSI) to complete the tunnel works. Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy conducted an in-depth review of the long-pending SLBC tunnel works and directed the officials to immediately resume remaining tunnel operations, including drilling and blasting. An estimated 10-km of tunnel work remains to be completed. Calling SLBC a crucial lifeline for Telangana, Uttam said its completion must be treated as a top priority and executed with urgency. The SLBC tunnel work is being taken up using the latest electromagnetic survey technology in collaboration with the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI). To ensure precise planning and seamless execution, the minister directed the officials to expedite the aerial LIDAR survey. He met earlier in the day with NGRI scientists to finalise the technical modalities of the survey. He reiterated that cost would not be a constraint, but quality and speed must be maintained at the highest standards. The meeting also marked the first formal interaction with Colonel Parikshit Mehra, a globally acclaimed tunnel engineering expert who has recently joined the Irrigation Department on deputation. The minister expressed confidence that Mehra's expertise would help resolve long-pending technical challenges and fast-track the completion of SLBC and other key tunnel projects. He also announced that General Harpal Singh, former Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army, would soon be appointed as Honorary Advisor to strengthen the department's technical capacity and execution capabilities. The minister also reviewed water availability across all major reservoirs in Telangana and directed the Irrigation Secretary and Engineer-in-Chief to prepare a scientific and practical plan for optimal utilisation of water during the ongoing Kharif season. He said the plan must take into account current reservoir levels, expected monsoon inflows, and the total ayacut that can be served effectively. He noted that the Irrigation and Agriculture departments had worked in close coordination during the previous Kharif and Yasangi seasons, leading to a record production of 281 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) of paddy.

Uttam reviews State-wide water availability, wants optimal use for Kharif

HYDERABAD Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday reviewed the availability of water across all major reservoirs in the State and instructed the irrigation authorities to prepare a scientific and practical plan for optimal utilisation of water during the ongoing Kharif season (vana kalam). The plan must take into account current reservoir levels, expected monsoon inflows and the total ayacut that could be served effectively, he said and noted that the Irrigation and Agriculture Departments had worked in tandem during the previous Kharif and Yasangi seasons, leading to a record production of 281 lakh tonnes of paddy, and made the State the largest paddy-producer in the country. Reviewing the water resources in both the Krishna and Godavari Basins, he assessed the readiness of the department to meet the irrigation needs of farmers. He told the officials to maintain the same level of coordination with District Collectors and field staff as in last year to ensure optimal water use for the present crop season. The Minister stressed for a clear and coordinated water release strategy to be in place based on real-time data, crop patterns and the geography of ayacut. 'Our primary objective is to ensure that no farmer suffers due to lack of water. The entire department must work proactively with foresight and accountability', Mr. Uttam Reddy said. Reviewing the monsoon preparedness, the Minister told the officials to take precautions to be taken before and during the periods of heavy rainfall. He directed the officials to closely monitor dams, reservoirs, canals and allied structures and take preventive measures to avoid breaches, flooding or infrastructure damage. The Minister instructed the department to stay in regular contact with the Disaster Management Department and ensure strong inter-agency coordination for flood control. 'Public safety and the structural integrity of all irrigation assets is non-negotiable. Officials must remain alert and responsive at all times', he added. Remove encroachments The meeting addressed long-pending land encroachment issues of properties belonging to the Irrigation Department. The Minister directed the officials to identify and evict illegal occupants from irrigation lands and facilities across Telangana, including the premises of Water and Land Management Training and Research Institute (WALAMTARI), and Engineering Research Laboratory (ERL). He announced that a statewide drive would be launched soon to reclaim and secure all irrigation department properties.

Nadda alarmed by rising urea demand in TG

Hyderabad: Union Minister of Fertilizers and Chemicals JP Nadda has expressed serious concern over the abnormal increase of urea consumption in Telangana. While accepting Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's request for additional supplies of urea, the union minister appealed to regulate chemical fertilizers by promoting organic farming. A day after the CM met the Union Minister in New Delhi, Nadda sent an official communication to the state government on the supply of urea. He also said that urea sales during Rabi (Yasangi) season in 2024-25 increased by 21 per cent as compared to Rabi in 2023-24 and it is a big worrying factor amid growing environmental challenges. The union minister also highlighted that the Centre was providing incentives to state governments through the 'Pranam scheme' to reduce the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and promote organic and natural farming. An official state delegation led by the Chief Minister met the Union Minister in Delhi on Tuesday and briefed Nadda about the shortage of urea and appealed to uninterrupted supply of urea in July and August for Kharif season. In a quick response, the union minister assured him of full support to meet the demand of fertilizers from the farmers, and instructed the officials of his ministry to ensure adequate supply of urea to Telangana. The union minister also instructed the state government officials to take necessary steps to ensure equal distribution of urea to various districts without diverting the stocks for non-agricultural needs.
