MLA directs Udupi CMC to take action against those letting untreated sewage into public spaces
MLA for Udupi Yashpal Suvarna on Saturday directed the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) to enforce waste management rules to prevent contamination of water sources in the city and take action against those letting untreated sewage into public places. Mr. Suvarna said that a proposal has been sent to the government to lay underground drainage (UGD) network in Santhekatte area. Speaking at a meeting organised to address complaints of residents over discharge of sewage from residential apartments and commercial complexes, Mr. Suvarna said that the CMC is looking for 50 acres to construct a new sewage treatment plant. It is searching for land in Athrady, Parkala, and Hiribettu areas. However, it will have to face opposition from local residents, he said. Mr. Suvarna instructed apartment residents without UGD connections to use cesspool suction vehicles to empty their septic tanks. He said that the CMC has ordered three advanced cesspool suction vehicles, which can even clear sludge from a distance of 100 metres. Residents from Moodusagri, Perampalli, and Indrali complained that several apartments, especially in Manipal town, were releasing untreated sewage into public spaces, leading to contamination of several wells. They sought immediate action, and flat owners who attended the meeting appreciated the CMC for reducing cesspool suction vehicle charges by 50% where no UGD network exists, as per the resolution passed in the CMC's general body meeting on February 25, 2025. A resident from Santhekatte pointed out that the UGD connections currently extend only till Ambagilu and urged authorities to expand the network till Santhekatte.

Severed cow head, skin dumped on roadside in Karnataka's Brahmavar, traffickers suspected
UDUPI: A local resident discovered the severed head and skin of a cow dumped by the roadside near Kunjal Junction in Aroor village, Brahmavar, late on Saturday night. It is suspected to be the act of cattle traffickers who disposed of the remains by the roadside. Pradeep (38), a resident of Chantaru village in Brahmavar taluk, stated in his complaint that the incident came to light while he was on his way home after work on Saturday night. At around 11:30 p.m., as he reached near Kunjal Junction, he spotted a cow's head and parts of its skin lying in the middle of the road near the rickshaw stand. As he inspected it closely, he suspected that unknown miscreants may have stolen a cow from an unidentified location, subjected it to cruelty, slaughtered it, and discarded the carcass in a public place. Following his complaint, a case was registered at Brahmavar Police Station under Sections 4, 5, and 12 of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, and Section 303(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials must work on the ground: Hebbalkar
Udupi: With the district experiencing more rainfall than usual, officials must work on the ground to ensure that the public does not face any inconvenience, said Laxmi Hebbalkar, minister of women and child development and Udupi district minister. Presiding over the quarterly KDP meeting on Friday, the minister said that Rs 4.5 crore was released to prevent sea erosion, and the work must be expedited. The minister instructed port department officials to identify areas affected by sea erosion from Hejmadi in Kaup taluk to Shiroor in Byndoor and submit a report to the govt. The maintenance of Malpe port should be done properly. CCTV should be installed, and security and cleanliness should be maintained, the minister directed port department officials. "Special attention should be given to tourism and sports development. The district should grow as a major tourism centre. It is a naturally beautiful place with religious sites, and it should attract more tourists. Unauthorised homestays should be curbed, and children under 18 should not be employed at tourist spots. Steps should be taken for the development of tourism and sports under the PPP model," the minister said. The company that supplied substandard seeds to farmers in the district should be blacklisted, and strict action should be taken. Horticulture department officials should ensure that govt schemes reach the people. Awareness should be raised about high-income generating fruits, she said. "In the coastal region of the state, fishing activities are more prevalent. However, only 25 houses are being approved under the housing scheme. Other districts are also being given 25 houses. Steps will be taken to resolve these issues," she said. The Varahi irrigation works were initiated five years ago, but compensation has not yet been provided, and crops have not been allowed to grow. This is causing a lot of trouble for farmers. Suitable compensation should be provided to farmers by the next meeting, the minister said. Udupi MLA criticizes SAF deployment
Udupi: The State government's decision to bring Udupi under the newly formed Special Action Force (SAF) to address communal disharmony has drawn criticism from Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, who said it tarnishes the district's image. In a statement, Suvarna asserted that Udupi has not experienced communal unrest in the past decade and questioned the necessity of SAF deployment in the region. 'The government has decided to deploy SAF in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Shivamogga, despite Udupi maintaining peace even when communal incidents occurred in neighboring Dakshina Kannada. This decision was made unilaterally, without consulting elected representatives or the public,' he said. The MLA also criticized the State Home Department, suggesting that the SAF formation reflects its inability to maintain peace in Dakshina Kannada. He accused Home Minister G. Parameshwara of indirectly admitting to a failure in ensuring law and order in the three districts. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) South Karnataka Divisional Joint Secretary Sharan Pumpwell also commented on the issue, urging the SAF to act impartially. 'The SAF should not become an 'Anti-Hindu Special Task Force.' Instead, it should focus on addressing issues like love jihad, illegal conversions, cow slaughter, drug peddling and other illegal activities that disrupt communal harmony,' he said in a statement.
