PM to brief govt MPs on key issues this evening, says Fadhlina

Education minister Fadhlina Sidek (centre) visiting SMK Taman Waiduri to observe the progress of Program Anak Kita, an effort between the finance and education ministries and Yayasan Hasanah. NIBONG TEBAL : Education minister Fadhlina Sidek says the closed-door meeting between the prime minister and MPs later this evening is meant to help government MPs prepare for the upcoming sitting of Parliament. She said the session would involve briefings on major current issues and allow MPs to receive clarity on the government's stand. 'I think it's a very progressive step, with explanations given directly by the prime minister himself,' she told reporters at SMK Taman Widuri here. The next Parliament session begins next week. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met Barisan Nasional MPs at Seri Perdana on Friday in a closed-door meeting believed to have focused on current national issues. Key figures present included deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and defence minister Khaled Nordin. No statements were given to the media. Fadhlina was at SMK Taman Waiduri to observe the progress of Program Anak Kita, a tripartite effort by the finance and education ministries and Yayasan Hasanah. It gives academic support to poor students through personal coaching, counselling, and digital tools. In Penang, 460, 2024 SPM candidates under the programme recorded a 99% exam attendance rate, with 93% qualifying for the SPM certificate. The programme also saw over 1,000 students nationwide improve from failing grades, particularly in core subjects like Bahasa Melayu, history and mathematics.

Jointly organised by Taman Tugu and sustainability foundation Yayasan Hasanah, visitors to the June 21 event were encouraged to bring their own containers in line with its zero waste concept and theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution'. This was aimed at getting those who attended to rethink their consumption habits and reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. Many took the opportunity to browse through the booths and take part in the talks and workshops held by the various conservation and environment groups participating, including WWF-Malaysia, the MareCet marine research organisation, Free Tree Society, Marine Conservation and Research Organisation Malaysia (Pulihara), Reef Check Malaysia, and Roots & Shoots Malaysia. Other participants included Gerai OA, Sunda Shelves, MUFG Bank (Malaysia) Berhad, Fuze Ecoteer and Uniqlo Malaysia. The event was made possible with the support of Amanah Lestari Alam (Alam) as the sustainability partner. Alam is a national initiative aiming to transform Malaysians' mindset about and behaviours around the environment. Taman Tugu project development chairman Datuk Mohamed Nasri Sallehuddin said the organisers were encouraged by the strong turnout and enthusiasm shown. 'Events like these are important in nurturing greater environmental awareness among the public. 'Even simple steps, such as bringing your own containers, can create lasting habits that contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone,' he said in a statement. Celebrated annually on June 5, World Environment Day encourages awareness and actions for the conservation of the environment. 'Plastic pollution is a growing concern that affects all of us in everything from our natural ecosystems to the food we eat, and increasingly, our own health. 'Addressing this challenge requires more than policy solutions; it calls for a shift in everyday habits and greater public awareness,' said Yayasan Hasanah trustee and managing director Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki. Yayasan Hasanah, she added, was honoured to partner with Taman Tugu in encouraging community-level actions that promote sustainable living and protect our shared environment. Alam chief executive officer Wan Faizah Che Din said her organisation was glad to support this platform. Taman Tugu, a 26ha urban forest park, is a not-for-profit initiative led by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, and supported by public agencies and civil society organisations. Managed by Amanah Warisan Negara trust, it aims to conserve heritage spaces and promote community well-being.

Teachers backbone of Anak Kita programme

PETALING JAYA : Behind every policy and strategic plan under the Anak Kita programme, an initiative by Yayasan Hasanah under its education pillar, are teachers who serve not only as implementers but also as its driving force. The programme, which aims to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy as well as reduce dropout rates and improve SPM pass rates, empowers educators to innovate in the classroom while tackling long-standing challenges in the education system. 'Teachers are the heart of this initiative,' said Che Nurul Fadhilah, a teacher at SK Seksyen 24 in Selangor. 'A child who cannot read today might one day become a leader, we must believe that.' That belief forms the foundation of how the programme operates and equips teachers to identify learning gaps, tailor their lessons and provide emotional support, particularly for students at risk of falling behind. At SK Senggarang in Johor, Zaiha Nabiha sees her role as more than just a teacher. 'I'm a mentor to my students, especially those who have been left behind. Sometimes, we are the only ones who believe in them.' Mohd Zani from SK Taman Damansara Aliff underscores the importance of flexibility in the classroom. 'Every day, I observe my students' moods and behaviour. My method changes based on what they need that day. That's how you reach them.' The programme also gives teachers the autonomy to adapt their approaches to suit their students' unique needs. 'This programme gave me the confidence to try new methods,' said Weltiana, a teacher at SK Karakit Banggi, a remote school in Sabah. 'We are no longer in the 'chalk and talk' era. Students today learn through visuals, technology and hands-on experience. Anak Kita helps us bridge that shift,' said Hamidah from SK Peserai, Johor. However, teachers often face irregular student attendance, limited resources and administrative burdens. 'Some of my students come to school unmotivated and can't concentrate. On top of that, we spend a lot of time on documentation, which reduces the attention we can give to students who need extra help,' said Weltiana. Another pressing concern is the lack of parental involvement. 'Without parents realising how important school attendance is, our work gets harder,' said Mohd Zani. Zaiha echoed this sentiment, highlighting how some students receive minimal support at home and depend entirely on their teachers for motivation. 'Sometimes, we are their only source of encouragement.' Under the Anak Kita programme, educators go beyond delivering academic content – they nurture values, build resilience and instil confidence. The programme also places strong emphasis on emotional well-being. 'Emotional support from our school community also makes a huge difference. When teachers are supported, we can give our best to students,' said Weltiana. Ultimately, the Anak Kita programme represents a whole-of-nation approach. While teachers are on the frontlines, the programme's success depends on the collaboration between educators, parents, policymakers and the broader community. We shouldn't wait for Teacher's Day to recognise those who quietly shape lives every day. Behind every child who can now read, count, or simply feel seen and valued, stands a teacher who never stopped believing.

National Teacher Summit Champions Holistic Education Ahead Of Kurikulum 2027

Subscribe to our FREE As Malaysia prepares for the rollout of Kurikulum 2027, which will transition classroom instruction toward values-based and student-centred learning, a targeted training initiative is laying the foundation to help teachers lead this transformation. The approach focuses on practical strategies that foster emotional development, empathy, and stronger teacher-student relationships. For the first time, 70 teachers from across the country have completed formal training in building Emotional Intelligence through Program Guru KARISMA ( Karakter Inspirasi Masyarakat )—a year-long initiative designed and led by Arus Academy, with full funding from Yayasan Hasanah, a foundation under Khazanah Nasional, and Ministry of Finance Malaysia. The initiative is part of broader efforts to prepare educators for Kurikulum 2027—Malaysia's next major curriculum reform that emphasises holistic development, including values, emotional intelligence, and responsible citizenship. The Sidang Guru Kemuncak KARISMA 2025 was officiated by Puan Hajah Nooraini Kamaruddin, Director of the Curriculum Development Division at the Ministry of Education. Character education and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a proactive educational approach that helps students understand and manage their emotions, build empathy, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and collaborate with others—skills that support academic success, mental well-being, and positive lifelong behaviours. Held in conjunction with the Sidang Guru Kemuncak KARISMA 2025 , the culmination of the programme brought together 300 educators, including the 70 trained participants, for a one-day national summit that blended expert-led workshops, classroom showcases, and panel discussions focused on holistic education. Teachers explored how to embed SEL into academic subjects—an increasingly vital competency under Kurikulum 2027. ' Kurikulum 2027 will shift the role of teachers beyond content delivery—it's about nurturing emotionally grounded, values-driven young people,' said Alina Amir, Co-founder of Arus Academy. ' Program Guru KARISMA equips teachers with the tools and mindset to create meaningful learning environments that reflect this shift. This is about elevating the teaching profession—preparing educators to meet the emotional and social needs of today's learners with confidence and care.' Alina Amir, co-founder of Arus Academy. The summit featured a national showcase of over 125 classroom activities and 70 action research projects led by the KARISMA cohort. These highlighted how SEL practices can boost student engagement, reduce classroom conflict, and build stronger interpersonal connections in the learning environment. International SEL expert Keeth Matheny, founder of SEL Launchpad, also participated in the Summit, leading sessions alongside interactive masterclasses on SEL-integrated pedagogy, teacher wellbeing, and holistic student assessment. A multidisciplinary panel of experts from education, corporate, and civil society sectors also convened to discuss new models of student assessment that measure not just academic outcomes, but also empathy, collaboration, and social responsibility. International SEL expert Keeth Matheny, founder of SEL Launchpad, led sessions and masterclasses on SEL-based teaching, teacher wellbeing, and holistic assessment. 'When we equip teachers to lead with empathy and intention, we're not just transforming classrooms—we're shaping a more compassionate and resilient education system for Malaysia,' said Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki, Trustee & Managing Director at Yayasan Hasanah. 'As a catalyst foundation, Yayasan Hasanah is committed to enabling systemic, people-centred reforms in education. Through Program Guru KARISMA, we're investing in teachers as agents of change – a vital part of the wider ecosystem that supports our children's growth. Alongside families, communities, and the whole-of-nation effort, teachers will be equipped with the skills and confidence to nurture a generation of empathetic, socially conscious learners.' Sarinah Suratman, Teacher at SK Kiaramas, Kuala Lumpur shared: 'The one-year training opened my eyes to the importance of exploring Social and Emotional Learning—not just for students, but for us as teachers. SEL gave me tools to manage my own emotions better, which has helped me become a more balanced and effective educator. Christina Pang Kang Jing, Teacher at SJK(C) Sam Yoke, Kuala Lumpur, added: 'Many students today struggle with focus, frustration, and peer conflict. As teachers, we often lack the tools to address these issues beyond academics. The programme gave us practical ways to integrate social and emotional learning into daily lessons – helping students manage emotions, collaborate better, and build stronger relationships in the classroom.' Christina Pang Kang Jing, teacher at SJK(C) Sam Yoke, Kuala Lumpur. While the initiative aligns with the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013–2025 – particularly its emphasis on holistic student development, 21st-century skill acquisition, and the cultivation of ethical and globally-minded citizens—it also supports global education commitments under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.7. This target calls for the integration of global citizenship, human rights, peace, and sustainability into education policy, curriculum, teacher training, and assessment. Program Guru KARISMA supports this by helping teachers deliver on the three learning domains of Global Citizenship Education (GCED)—cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioural—through interactive, student-centred pedagogy, teacher wellbeing training, and more holistic approaches to student assessment.
