Claims of forging teacher's signature, taunts led to suicide, say batchmates as dental student at Sharda University dies by suicide
An eerie silence prevailed at Mandela Girls Hostel, home to Jyoti, a 21-year-old Bachelor of Dental Surgery student at Sharda University, for the last two years. Room 1209, part of a four-room apartment located on the 12th floor, stood locked on Saturday, hours after Jyoti was found hanging inside. The incident would later lead to the arrest of faculty members Dr Mahinder Singh Chauhan and Dr Shairy Vashist on the charge of abetment of suicide. Jyoti's batchmates remembered her as intelligent and bright. 'I have her notes that we prepared for the last semester,' said a student. Another student said, 'It all began a week ago. What happened to her, happens to all of us here almost every day, she just could not take it.' According to her batchmates, the 'humiliation' began last Friday when Jyoti went to obtain the signature of Dr Chauhan on her practical file. 'Our second-year exams will begin from Tuesday. Before that we have to finish all lab work and complete our files for all six subjects,' said one student. 'We were all waiting in line for Dr Chauhan. She was just ahead of me. When her turn came, she handed over her file to him. Moments before the professor would sign, he flipped the pages and looked at the signature on her last practical work. He then claimed, 'These are not my signature… you have forged it',' the student added. 'As she denied his claims, the professor asked her to leave immediately. She left in tears. Her file was confiscated and a call was made to her parents,' another student said. On Monday, Jyoti's father visited the university and requested the professors to not mistreat her, the students said. 'But yesterday, when she went to collect her file, she was taunted for complaining about the teachers to her parents. 'Both (Dr Chauhan and Dr Vashist) were looking at our practical files. When her turn came, they started to taunt her. She was in tears again…,' a student said. Once classes were over on Friday, the 21-year-old was seen returning to her room. 'She was found dead around 8.45 pm by her friend, who had gone to check on her after her parents called to say that Jyoti was not answering their calls,' the student added. Main accused still absconding days after 14-year-old girl gang-raped at Ghaziabad home: Police
Three days after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside her flat in Ghaziabad, police on Wednesday said that the main accused is still absconding. Two of the four accused, who were apprehended on Tuesday, are both 19, and they have been formally arrested, officers added. According to an official statement issued by the Ghaziabad Police, both the teenagers were apprehended from the Industrial Area Police Post on Tuesday, below the Mehrouli Underpass. 'Following the registration of the FIR on Monday under relevant sections, a team was formed, and based on CCTV footage and local intelligence, police arrested the two accused,' read the statement. Earlier, police had said that all four accused were believed to be minors. 'Both the arrested accused are residents of Ghaziabad, and are around 19 years of age,' the statement read. Meanwhile, an officer said that the girl was yet to record her statement before the magistrate. 'She was to record her statement on Tuesday, but we could not do that because of her poor health,' the officer said, adding that the medical examination report of the girl is also awaited. According to the girl's father, who filed the police complaint with the Ghaziabad Police on Sunday, she received a call from one of the accused when her mother had gone to a nearby market to buy groceries. She was alone at home when the incident happened, he said. 'She received a call on Instagram from a boy who had been texting her on social media for the last two days. He told her that he was coming to the flat to meet her,' the complaint stated. The girl's father further alleged that when his daughter opened the door, the four accused forcibly dragged her inside the room by covering her mouth with their hands and raped her by taking turns. The senior officers involved in the investigation further told The Indian Express that, prima facie, it appeared that the girl knew the main accused as they studied in the same school. 'The accused knew the girl, and the other boys allegedly reached there later, after the main accused called them. We are still investigating the case and will apprehend the main accused,' said the officer, adding that the gangrape allegations are under investigation. No bail for Ghaziabad pastor, aide arrested for ‘religious conversion'
The Ghaziabad District Court on Tuesday rejected the bail application of a pastor and a Ghaziabad resident who were arrested for allegedly attempting to convert members of the Scheduled Caste by offering them inducements. Police had arrested two men, pastor Vinod Kunj Mohan (50) and Premchand Jatav (66), following a complaint filed by Bajrang Dal member Prabal Gupta on June 15. He had alleged that the pastor carried out religious conversions at Jatav's home. During Tuesday's hearing, Ghaziabad Additional Session Judge Rohit Aggarwal said that there is no relevant ground for releasing the pastor. 'Keeping in view all the facts and circumstances of the case and in the light of the gravity of the crime and various documentary and oral evidence collected during the investigation against the accused, Vinod Kunj Mohan, there is no relevant ground for releasing the applicant on bail,' read the order. 'Accordingly, the first bail application of the applicant is liable to be dismissed on merits,' it added. While rejecting Premchand's bail plea, too, the court said that there were no relevant grounds for his release. The two were booked under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (threats involving death), 352 (breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. During the hearing, Mohan's lawyer had submitted before the court that his client had never converted anyone. 'There is no proof of his involvement, and the complainant, who is an active member of the Bajrang Dal, has falsely implicated him in the case,' he had told the court. 'The FIR is to gain political benefits,' he had added. The lawyer had further submitted that no recovery of any item was made from the place where the alleged conversions took place. 'When anyone is converted, writings and readings are involved… but nothing was found,' the petitioner had told the court. Neetika Jha is a Correspondent with The Indian Express. 14-year-old girl gang-raped by 4 minors inside Ghaziabad flat: Police
Four minor boys allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl inside her flat in Ghaziabad on Sunday, the police said on Tuesday. The girl was alone at her house at the time, and the incident came to light when her mother returned home and found the boys inside, the police added. The police have launched an investigation after registering an FIR on Monday on charges of gang rape and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. A senior police officer told The Indian Express that the girl is yet to record her statement before the magistrate, and they are trying to identify all the accused. According to the girl's father, who filed the police complaint, at around 11.30 am on Sunday, the girl received a call from one of the accused when her mother had gone to a nearby market to buy groceries. '…received a call on her Instagram from a boy who had been texting her on social media for the last two days. He told her that he was coming to the flat to meet her,' his complaint stated. Four boys came to their house and rang the bell, he said. 'When my daughter opened the gate of the flat, the four accused forcibly took her into the room by covering her mouth with their hands and raped her by taking turns,' he said in his complaint. Teacher faked abduction to stop merger of schools in Bulandshahr, suspended
The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended a teacher at the Shakarpur village primary school in Bulandshahr district, after investigation revealed he orchestrated his own kidnapping to block the merger of schools under the New Education Policy. On July 7,the head of the school education department learned that Ankit Kumar had been 'kidnapped' by villagers protesting plans to merge his school, home to just 30 students, with another, located 1.5 km at Chithera village. Education officials dispatched the block officer to verify the report and secure his release. Basic Shiksha Adhikari (Bulandshahr) Laxmikant Pandey told The Indian Express that the fake kidnapping of the teacher came to light when an investigation began into the case. 'There are 30 students at the primary school and we were planning to shift them to a primary school at Chithera village, which is 1.5km away from Shakarpur,' said Pandey. 'He had convinced villagers to kidnap him. He had told them that once the two schools were merged their children would not be able to attend classes anymore as the distance would increase. The villagers then kidnapped him thinking that the news of his kidnapping will stop the merger,' said the official. His fake kidnapping came to light when the team of education officials started questioning villagers. 'We received information that Kumar was kidnapped by a group of villagers and was locked inside a classroom. Soon, I rushed the team of officials to rescue him. After convincing villagers for nearly half an hour, they released Kumar,' he said. Pandey said that Kumar on Monday submitted an affidavit seeking forgiveness for his act. 'It was a drama to stop the merger. We had prepared the list of 382 schools of which 184 have been merged. A similar process was going on at Shikarpur as well. I had suspended the teacher with immediate effect but on Monday, he submitted an affidavit seeking forgiveness for his act. We are looking into this matter,' he said. The merging of schools began after the Uttar Pradesh government began an initiative to pair every primary school with low attendance to nearby educational facilities to make the education system more functional and viable, aligning with the goals of the New Education Policy, 2020.
