For First Time, Streaming Viewing Topped Broadcast and Cable Combined in May
More and more, life is but a stream for us consumers of TV. Nielsen's latest monthly viewership report, titled The Gauge, shows that for the month of May, TV viewing done via streaming eclipsed broadcast and cable combined for the first time ever. More from TVLine Virgin River Star Hints at Major Change for Mel in Season 7: 'I Wonder Why...' MLB Livestream: How to Watch Major League Baseball Games Without Cable Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Star Addresses Fans' Theory About Alex Ahead of Season 2: 'We Play Into That' According to The Gauge, streaming represented 44.8% of TV viewership in May — its largest share to date — while broadcast (with 20.1%) and cable (24.1%) combined to represent 44.2% of TV viewership. Nielsen notes that since The Gauge's launch four years ago, streaming has seen a usage increase of 71%, while broadcast and cable viewing have declined (down 21% and 39%, respectively). 'It's fitting that this inflection point coincides with the four-year anniversary of Nielsen's The Gauge, which has become the gold standard for streaming TV measurement,' Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao said in a statement. 'It's also a credit to media companies, who have deftly adapted their programming strategies to meet their viewers where they are watching TV — whether it's on streaming or linear platforms.' Also in that four-year span, several more streaming services are now reported on by The Gauge, by having attained a full share point of TV usage. They join the OGs Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Prime Video and Disney+. Nielsen says that 'free services have been a major driver of streaming's overall success,' with YouTube Main (excluding YouTube TV) exhibiting steady, significant growth (+120%) since 2021. 'Additionally, FAST services have become increasingly popular, and three have reached the reportable threshold in The Gauge,' with PlutoTV, Roku Channel and Tubi combining for 5.7% of total TV viewing in May — more than any individual broadcast network. The Bachelor: Grant Ellis and Fiancée Juliana Split Up After 3 Months
Another Bachelor coupling has ended in heartbreak: Grant Ellis, the most recent star of ABC's dating series, has announced he and his fiancée Juliana Pasquarosa have split up. The news comes less than three months after the finale of Grant's season, which aired in March and saw Grant choose Juliana over runner-up Litia — after much deliberation — and propose to her, with Juliana happily accepting. 'We both gave this our best and poured a lot of love into each other, but after a lot of deep conversations, we've come to the understanding that we're simply not the right fit long term.' 'What we had was meaningful,' he insisted. 'The connection we built on the show was real, and so was the effort we made to continue once the cameras stopped rolling. There's no negativity here. No resentment. Just two people who care about each other and want the best for one another moving forward. I'll always be grateful for what we shared and for the growth that came with it.' Juliana confirmed the split on her Instagram: 'After a lot of honest conversations and reflection, we've come to the decision that this chapter of our lives is meant to continue on separate paths… We're still cheering each other on, just from different places now.' In better Bachelor Nation news, though, Season 27 star Zach Shallcross and the recipient of his final rose, Kaity Biggar, got married last month in a private (i.e., not televised) ceremony in Texas, becoming just the second Bachelor final couple to actually tie the knot. Yellowjackets Renewed for Season 4
The poet Taylor Swift once asked: Are we out of the woods yet/are we out of the woods yet/are we out of the woods yet/are we out of the woods? Now, we have an answer: Nope. Paramount+ With Showtime has renewed Yellowjackets for Season 4, the cable network announced Tuesday. '[Series co-creators] Ashley [Lyle] and Bart [Nickerson] have masterfully crafted an utterly singular, genre-defying phenomenon: a perfect alchemy of psychological horror, survival thriller and coming-of-age drama that continues to captivate audiences worldwide, brought to life by our extraordinarily talented and beloved cast.' According to the network, the Season 3 finale (which dropped April 13) was the most-streamed episode in the series' run so far. The hour brought the stranded teens' story to the point where we first met them: the hunt in the woods that kicked off the series' premiere. It revealed that the girl who died in the pit was Mari (who later was eaten by her cannibalistic teammates) and that the Antler Queen was Shauna. 7th Heaven Reboot in Development From EP Jessica Biel — Which Cast Members Will Return?
A reboot of the classic family drama 7th Heaven is reportedly in early development from CBS Studios, with one of the show's original stars on board as an executive producer, according to Variety. Through her production company Iron Ocean, Jessica Biel is reportedly developing a new iteration of the show, one that would follow a diverse family. No original cast members are expected to appear at this time. No further information, including a potential network or streaming home for the reboot, is known at this time. 7th Heaven initially ran for 11 seasons (10 on The WB and one last hurrah on The CW) between 1996 and 2007, airing a total of 243 episodes. The story of a minister and his family, 7th Heaven originally starred Stephen Collins as Eric, Catherine Hicks as Annie, Barry Watson as Matt, David Gallagher as Simon, Biel as Mary, Beverly Mitchell as Lucy, Mackenzie Rosman as Ruthie and Happy the Dog as her dang self. Additional notable series regulars throughout the show's storied run included Geoff Stults as Ben Kinkirk, Ashlee Simpson as Cecelia Smith, Rachel Blanchard as Roxanne Richardson, Jeremy London as Chandler Hampton, Tyler Hoechlin as Martin Brewer and Haylie Duff as Sandy Jameson. The show's legacy was tarnished in December 2014 when audio recordings were released of Collins admitting to engaging in sexual misconduct with several underage girls. When TMZ asked Hicks for her thoughts on a potential 7th Heaven revival in 2016, she said, 'I mean, we'd have to open with Stephen's coffin.'
