Union Bank branch in Nagpur rejects Marathi FIR in accident claim case, MNS protests

The Nagpur police on Wednesday booked 14 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers after they held a protest at the Union Bank of India's Seminary Hills branch on Wednesday over the bank allegedly refusing to accept a First Information Report (FIR) copy written in Marathi for an accident compensation claim. The protest stemmed from the case of Yogesh Bopche, who died in a road accident on June 8. His family approached Union Bank to claim a Rs 2 lakh accidental death compensation. However, the bank allegedly turned down the claim because the FIR lodged at the Beltarodi police station was in Marathi. Yogesh's brother, Lokesh, alleged that the bank officials insisted that the FIR be translated into English or Hindi, notarised, and submitted as an affidavit. This demand led to weeks of delays for the family, who were left without support after the death of their sole breadwinner. On Wednesday, MNS workers gathered outside the bank, shouted slogans, and threw black ink at the bank's board in protest. The situation escalated briefly when they confronted the branch manager. The protest concluded only after the manager issued an apology in the presence of the media and the Nagpur police. 'When we arrived to question the manager, he clarified that he himself was a Maharashtrian and had not personally rejected the FIR. He called it a misunderstanding and apologised,' Chandu Lade, Nagpur city president, MNS, said. 'Our vision is clear: Maharashtrat Marathi (Marathi in Maharashtra). The bank manager also apologised over this and has ensured swift help to the family,' Lade told The Indian Express. Harshal Jununkar, the Union Bank branch manager, maintained that the confusion was due to procedural requirements. 'The insurance company needs documents in Hindi or English. The FIR was in Marathi, and we only followed what was required for the claim to be processed,' he said. However, MNS workers said that denying documents in the state's official language amounted to insulting Marathi. The protestors were later detained for over six hours by the Gittikhadan police in Nagpur, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were imposed on 14 MNS workers.

MNS Workers Create Ruckus At Nagpur Bank Over Hindi-Marathi Row

Last Updated: MNS workers protested at Union Bank in Nagpur after it refused an insurance claim due to an FIR in Marathi, highlighting language tensions in Maharashtra. Amid the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, several workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) created a chaos at a bank in Nagpur following a row over the usage of the Marathi. Several MNS workers launched a protest against Union Bank of India's Seminary Hills branch in Nagpur after the bank allegedly refused to process an insurance claim because the FIR submitted was in Marathi. During the protest, the party workers allegedly had a verbal spat with bank officials who sought Hindi translation of an FIR registered in Marathi. The issue began after the death of a young man named Yogesh Bopche. Following his death, the bereaved family approached the bank to initiate the insurance claim process and submitted all required documents, including a copy of the FIR, news agency IANS reported. The family was subsequently denied the insurance compensation. Irked with this, the family reached out to local MNS leaders who reached the bank along with hundreds of workers to protest and created a ruckus. The incident has triggered serious questions about the functioning of banks and financial institutions in Maharashtra, with critics arguing that rejecting documents in Marathi not only defies legal norms but also hurts public sentiment. Meanwhile, bank officials told India Today that since the headquarters of the insurance company is in Kolkata, where no one understands Marathi. So, as a regular practice, Hindi translations of FIRs registered in accident cases are sent there along with the claim form. Language Row In Maharashtra The incident came into fore at a time when the Thackeray brothers– Shiv Sena (UBT's) Uddhav Thackeray and MNS' Raj Thackeray– have targeted the BJP-led state government for trying to 'impose' Hindi in Maharashtra and migrants for not speaking Marathi. Last week, an auto-rickshaw driver in Maharashtra's Palghar was thrashed in public, allegedly by the supporters of Uddhav Sena and Raj Thackeray's MNS over his refusal to speak Marathi. A video of the auto-rickshaw driver, a migrant, went viral, showing him arguing with another migrant from Uttar Pradesh, Bhavesh Padolia, at Virar station. He said in the video that he would only speak Hindi when he was asked why he was not speaking in Marathi. Earlier, MNS workers threw stones and vandalised the office of a businessman named Sushil Kedia, who had earlier issued an open dare to Raj Thackeray, stating that he would not be intimidated by MNS workers or be forced to learn Marathi under pressure. Earlier this month, a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Mira Road was assaulted after he allegedly refused to speak in Marathi.
