Biz hiring Bangla illegals to face music, state govt to enforce online verification
Mumbai: The state govt Friday issued a circular holding owners of establishments accountable if they employ illegal Bangladeshi migrants, effectively making them responsible for providing shelter to such individuals, and said it will amend the laws, if needed, to initiate action against the errants. The govt will also implement an online system for verification of documents, says the circular issued by the home department, reports Vijay V Singh. It said police inquiries found many infiltrators were employed by builders, small & large industries, traders, and other economic entities mainly due to their willingness to work for lower wages. "These entities fail to recognize that such actions may harm national security," said the circular. In March, junior home minister Yogesh Kadam told the assembly that govt has asked developers and contractors in Mumbai to give an undertaking that they did not employ illegal Bangladeshi migrants. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The circular said that any official found assisting such infiltrators in obtaining govt documents using forged papers will face criminal prosecution. Earlier, in March, while responding to questions in the assembly on the action taken against Bangladeshi infiltrators, junior home minister Yogesh Kadam had said govt has asked developers and contractors in Mumbai to give an undertaking that they did not employ Bangladeshis. The issue of illegal migrants came to focus after a Bangladeshi national, who had illegally entered India and was living under the alias Bijoy Das, broke into actor Saif Ali Khan's Bandra residence and stabbed him and his staff during a burglary attempt in Jan. Friday's circular, issued by state home department, noted that Bangladeshi infiltrators exploit state welfare schemes. "Since national security is paramount, no infiltrating Bangladeshi should be employed under any work or at any commercial establishment. All administrative departments must issue instructions to their regional offices accordingly," stated the circular. Govt has also asked the departments concerned to "strictly ensure that infiltrating Bangladeshis are not employed in any establishments that come under administrative supervision — such as construction workers, mechanics, welders, drivers, plumbers, and waiters". After illegally entering Maharashtra, Bangladeshis often obtain various proofs/govt documents based on forged documents to establish their stay here. Hence, the verification of documents submitted with applications should be carried out by the departments that originally issued those documents, stated the circular. If found that the application was made based on forged documents, it must be cancelled. In case a verified copy is required during issuance, verification should be done using DigiLocker certificates to ensure accuracy and reliability of the submitted documents.

State to seek DP workaround for redevelopment of Arthur Road Jail
MUMBAI: The plan to redevelop Arthur Road jail, Mumbai's main prison, has inched forward, with the state deciding to urge the civic administration to ease a provision that would force it to surrender a sizable portion of its property. Minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam told officials of his department and the jails department of the city police on Thursday to prepare a plan for a new ground-plus-four storey prison that would accommodate 5,000 prisoners. The present British-era jail has a capacity for 800 inmates although it houses as many as 3,500. The challenge to building a new structure comes from a provision in the city's Development Plan (DP), which mandates that the jail give up a significant portion of its property when it redevelops the prison. The land thus surrendered would add 15 metres to the width of the road outside, converting it into a 35-metre-wide stretch. The portion in question currently houses the jail's staff quarters. 'The government is working on plans to redevelop Arthur Road Jail as well as Byculla Jail, which is for women. For the Arthur Road Jail redevelopment, I have directed officials to submit a fresh proposal with a request for concessions from the provisions in the DP, to construct a ground-plus-four storey structure. We will request the BMC commissioner for the concession,' said Kadam. He has directed officials from the home department and prisons department to visit the Singapore jail before preparing the plan. He has also asked officials to work on plot reservations on 22 acres of land in Mankhurd for the construction of a new jail. A home department official said the new Arthur Road Jail would be built in phases and four temporary barracks would be constructed inside the premises, to accommodate the inmates. Kadam also said the new jail would have three courtrooms. This would save time and money as inmates would not have to be transported for court hearings outside. It would also ease the pressure to provide security to the inmates while transporting them. 'During the trial of Ajmal Kasab, who had led the attack on Mumbai in 2008, a court was set up inside the Arthur Road Jail. Adding two more courtrooms would ease the pressure on the police to provide security and other arrangements to inmates for travel to court,' said Kadam. .

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 2 (ANI): The food business licence of quick-commerce firm Zepto in Dharavi in Mumbai, has been suspended by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for non-compliances with food safety standards. Based on information received from Minister of State for Food and Drug Administration, Yogesh Kadam, and under the guidance of Mangesh Mane, Joint Commissioner (Food), an inspection was conducted at the premises of Kiranakart Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (Zepto), located in Dharavi, Mumbai, by Food Safety Officer Ram Bodke, the Maharashtra FDA said in a statement. The inspection revealed serious non-compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, it said. Key observations during the inspection included- Fungal growth observed on certain food articles; storage of products near clogged/stagnant water, indicating poor hygiene; cold storage temperatures not maintained as per regulatory standards; wet and filthy floors, with food items stored in a disorganised and unsanitary manner, including directly on the floor and expired food products found not clearly separated from non-expired stock. 'These findings constitute a failure to comply with the conditions of the license. Accordingly, Smt. Anupamaa Balasaheb Patil, Assistant Commissioner (Food), issued an order of immediate suspension under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and Regulation 2.1.8(4) of the Licensing and Registration Regulations, 2011,' FDA Maharashtra, Mumbai Division said in a statement. As per the statement, the suspension remains effective until the establishment achieves full compliance and receives approval from the licensing authority. Zepto says ‘taking corrective measures' after Maharashtra FDA suspends license in Dharavi over hygiene
Zepto on Monday said it is taking all necessary corrective measures to resume operations after Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the food business license of Kiranakart Technologies Pvt. Ltd.—the parent company of the quick-commerce platform —for its Dharavi facility. The Maharashtra FDA suspended the food business license citing serious violations of food safety and hygiene norms. The action was taken after a surprise inspection on May 31 by food safety officer Ram Bodke, conducted under the direction of Minister of State for FDA Yogesh Kadam and supervision of Joint Commissioner (Food) Mangesh Mane. The inspection revealed multiple breaches of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Zepto released a statement on the matter and said, 'We are committed to rectifying the lapses identified and strengthening our processes to provide the best and safest quality of products to our consumers'. "We are taking all necessary corrective measures to resume operations in accordance with regulatory obligations and applicable laws as soon as possible. We have already initiated an internal review and are working closely with the concerned authorities to ensure full and swift compliance," Zepto added. According to the FDA's report, inspectors found several food items with visible fungal growth, while others were stored in proximity to stagnant, clogged water—raising the risk of pest infestation, as reported by Hindustan Times earlier. Cold storage units were not maintaining the prescribed temperatures, and the facility's floors were wet, dirty, and littered with food products stored directly on the ground. Food items that had crossed their expiry dates were also found mixed with fresh inventory, violating basic protocols of segregation and shelf-life management. 'These findings point to gross non-compliance with the conditions of the food business license and present a clear risk to public health,' the FDA had said in a statement.
