Veterinary clinic liable for emotional damages after Yorkshire Terrier suffers burns
Triesie the Yorkshire Terrier who suffered a burn wound from a hot water bottle: Image: Supplied The Pierre van Ryneveld veterinary clinic in Pretoria was ordered to pay emotional damages to the owner of a Yorkshire Terrier called Triesie, who underwent a cruciate ligament repair but was badly burnt on her other leg by a hot water bottle. Riaan Nortje turned to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, where he demanded damages from the Pierre van Ryneveld Veterinary sued the veterinary clinic for R400 000 for emotional damages. Deputy Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba granted the claim for emotional shock but ordered that the veterinary clinic pay the proved damages. Nortje also succeeded in his claim for travelling and related costs as he visited Triesie at the clinic following her injuries. The clinic was, in this regard, ordered to pay his proven damages. His claim for R103 800 in damages, following his allegations that Triesie was bought as a show dog, and if it was not for her injuries, she would have earned this amount through shows; however, this claim was turned down. The drama started when Triesie underwent a cruciate ligament repair but was allegedly badly burnt on her other leg by a hot water bottle. A few days after he had fetched her, he noticed that she had swelling on the right-hand side of her body and that she experienced severe discomfort when touched on her right-hand side. Nortje spoke to his veterinarian about it and was told that a hot water bottle was pressed against her right-hand side during the operation, which could explain her discomfort. He said he was advised to treat the swelling with a hot and a cold cloth. He said Triesie began 'oozing pus' from the skin on her right-hand side, and it emitted an odour of rotting flesh. Next Stay Close ✕ He was given medication for her, but things did not improve, and he yet again returned her to the clinic as the wound smelled bad. He stated that when he returned her on another occasion, part of her skin had been removed from the burnt area. At this juncture, Nortje said she still needed to be assisted with feeding; she was unable to walk, nor could she defecate. According to him, the veterinarian apologised for the burning of the dog and said it was a mere accident. Nortje said that during this entire ordeal, she had lost about 25% of her body weight. Veterinarian Dr Hester Van Zyl testified that she performed the cruciate ligament repair procedure on Triesie. The hot water bottle used during the operation is prepared by a nurse who ensures that the bottle is filled with 50 percent cold and 50 percent warm water. The bottle is also covered with a blanket or towel to prevent burning patient animals, she explained. According to her, she did not observe any injury on the dog when she was discharged and said Nortje only later showed her the burns. She disputed that Triesie's right-hand side injury was caused by the hot water bottle used during her operation. The veterinarian said that given the circumstances, reasonable post-surgery management and aftercare treatment were provided to Triesie. Judge Lewaba found that given the evidence and pictures handed to court of Triesie's injuries, it is probable that when her right-hand side rested on the hot water bottle, she had sustained the burns. He acknowledged that Nortje had suffered emotionally and remarked that he had tears in his eyes when he testified that Triesie was like his child and that her pain also affected him.

80s rock star cancels tour days before first gig after severe spinal fracture
80s musician Aldo Nova has been forced to cancel his upcoming tour dates after fracturing his spine from falling down a flight of stairs. The 68-year-old rock star, who also produced Celine Dion's Falling Into You album, was days away from beginning his US tour. He was due to perform in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 9 but his wife, Sylvia Bechard, announced on Facebook he was in no position to play. 'Due to an unfortunate fall down a flight of stairs, Aldo has suffered a cervical spine fracture at the level of C1, which is a serious injury,' she explained. 'Fortunately, he does not need spinal surgery but has to wear a special neck brace for up to a year depending on his progress. I will keep you updated on a regular basis.' A C1 spinal fracture can take, on average, around three months to heal if no surgery is needed, according to the NHS. Aldo has not shared an update himself but Loudwire reports that his six upcoming gigs have been cancelled. He was due to play across the US throughout July and August, then again in October, closing with a final November gig in Las Vegas. Just last month, the Grammy winner posted about how excited he was to be working on the tour, sharing a snap with his dog, Roxy. He wrote: 'Me and my Yorkshire Terrier Roxy taking in some fresh before I lock myself away in the basement, working on the new set for our upcoming July shows where we'll now be doing almost my complete 1st album, and, believe it or not 2 songs from my Twitch and Subject and of course Blood on Bricks albums. 'See you out there on the road. If I'm in your town, come on out. You won't regret it.' Aldo's self-titled debut album was released in 1982, and is certified two times platinum, peaking at number eight on the US Billboard chart and six in Canada at the time. More Trending His song Fantasy climbed to number 23 on the Hot 100 and number three on the Rock chart, although it never broke through in the UK. Over the years, Aldo has worked with numerous high-profile artists, including Jon Bon Jovi, writing the guitar riff for track Blaze of Glory. In 1996, he received a Grammy Award as co-producer on Celine Dion's album of the year Falling Into You and wrote tracks like You and I, Can't Fight This Feelin' and more for the singer. He has released six studio albums, including Twitch and Subject…Aldo Nova, as well as three EPs and various compilation records. Got a story? EXCLUSIVE Mel B's beloved Yorkshire Terrier Cookie serves as ringbearer during Spice Girl's wedding to Rory McPhee at St Paul's Cathedral
They say that dog is man's best friend. And Yorkshire Terrier Cookie proved she's woman's best friend too as she played a very special role during owner Mel B 's wedding to hairdresser Rory McPhee on Saturday. The pet pooch was seen being carried into St Paul's Cathedral by a guest as she prepared to carry out her unique part at the ceremony - ringbearer. Cookie was dyed bright pink - something that Mel has come under fire for in the past - as she was carried past a host of celebrities and into the iconic venue. Traditionally, dogs are not allowed inside St Paul's unless they are guide dogs, hearing dogs or registered assistance dogs. MailOnline understands that the nuptials also saw Rory's brother Jordan act as best man, while pal James Steen filled in to walk Mel down the aisle in place of her late father Martin Brown. Mel's nieces served as flower girls. Yet while Cookie was adorable - she couldn't upstage blushing bride Mel B - who looked incredible in a pearl-adorned white gown as she arrived. The Spice Girl, who arrived in a white Bentley, flashed a radiant smile and adjusted her veil as she prepared to head inside to become Mrs McPhee. Mel's gown featured a sheer illusion design adorned with white pearls and a ruched bodice, with the singer adding a flowing veil to her bridal look. Meanwhile, Groom Rory opted for traditional Scottish attire complete with a red and green tartan kilt. Emma Bunton, the only other Spice Girl in attendance - led the celebrity guests arriving for the wedding as Scary Spice prepared to walk down the aisle for the third time. While it has been reported that Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell and Melanie Chisholm will also be absent - Emma ensured she was there to support her friend. Also in attendance was Mel's sister Danielle Brown, Daisy Lowe, Katherine Ryan and Gaby Roslin - who were dressed to impress for the ceremony. Mel confirmed she was tying the knot with Rory back in November 2022 after three years of dating after he got down on one knee with a £100k diamond ring. The singer has credited Rory for making her feel 'more confident than ever'. The couple have known each other for years, with Rory having been a family friend and has worked as her hair stylist. And Mel has ensured she pulled out all the stops to ensure her wedding to Rory is a picture perfect day, and after saying her vows, she'll throw a huge 'party in the sky' after hiring the Shard in London for the wedding reception. The Spice Girl will be joined by her guests for a meal, drinks and dancing at the Shangri-La venue inside the building which boasts 95 floors and promises panoramic views over the capital. There her friends and family will dance into the small hours as the 'party of the century' has been promised by the bride and groom.

Video: Owner Proves Yorkie Might Not Be Her ‘Kid' But Is Her ‘Whole World'
Ask any dog parent if their pup is 'just a dog,' and prepare for a very long, emotionally charged rebuttal. From meal prep to daily routines, many pet owners find themselves doing nearly everything a parent would, just for a four-legged 'kid' who never talks back. One Yorkie mom has taken that comparison to heart in a recent video, and the internet is loving the way she shows just how 'not a kid' her pup really is. Zuko, a small Yorkshire Terrier, is featured in a video uploaded to the TikTok account @zukoslittlelife. The short clip is going viral for its quiet but powerful message: pets can be just as important and cherished as children. It opens with a line many pet parents have heard very often: 'He's not your kid.' The camera shows Zuko standing in a room surrounded by scattered toys. The scene then shifts to his owner gathering the toys and placing them back into a bin, while the caption reads, 'As I pick up all his toys and place them back in his bin for the next time he wants to play.' The theme carries on with a shot of the owner preparing breakfast — not just for herself, but for Zuko too — making sure he starts his day with a healthy meal. Each new clip contrasts the repeated phrase, 'He's not your kid,' with loving, thoughtful actions that reflect the deep bond they share. From taking him outside for exercise and fresh air to washing his blankets so he sleeps soundly, every detail mirrors the care a parent gives a child. She even teaches him new tricks to keep his mind sharp, nurturing his growth much like any devoted caregiver would. The video closes with a heartfelt admission: 'Yeah, he's not my kid… He's my heart… My whole world.' Zuko may not be her biological child, but the love and devotion she shows him are every bit as genuine. In her final message, she gently acknowledges those who might not understand that kind of connection, hoping they, too, one day meet a dog who changes their life in the same way Zuko has transformed hers. How Long Dogs Live 2025: Researchers found this is how long 19 popular breeds of adorable dog live on average - including the loving Labrador 🐕
We're a nation of dog lovers, with around one-in-three households including at least one four-legged friend . By far the most popular pet in the UK, they make for wonderful companions, all the while improving both our mental and physical health - and that's a scientific fact. The army of dog owners continues to grow, with 221 different breeds of pedigree dog to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds . Choosing the right breed is absolutely essential – for example opting for a small dog if you don't have much room at home, or a hypoallergenic dog if you suffer from allergies. There's also always the option of adopting a dog from a dog shelter for a minimal fee - for example from the Dogs Trust . There's even academic guidance to seek out, with Psychologist Stanley Coren's book 'The Intelligence of Dogs' ranking breeds by instincts the ability to adapt. Meanwhile, how long a dog lives is partly dependent on its breed - with some far more likely to reach a grand old age than others. Research published in the journal Scientific Reports has used the Royal Veterinary College's Veterinary Companion Animal Surveillance System (VetCompass), a database holding information on over two million animals, to work out the average life expectance of some of the UK's most popular breeds of dog. Researchers took a random sample of 30,563 dogs that died over a five year period to come to their findings. Here's what they found to be the average lifespan of 19 of the most common dog breeds. 1 . Jack Russell Terrier The Jack Russell Terrier was the longest living breed that the study looked at - with an average age of 12.72 years. The cheery wee dogs were originally bred for fox hunting in North Devon. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Yorkshire Terrier Another terrier takes second spot. Small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs, so it's no surprise to see the tiny Yorkshire Terrier coming high up in this list with an average lifespan of 12.54 years. It orginated in the nineteenth century in - unsurprisingly - the English county of Yorkshire. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Border Collie The world's most intelligent dog breed, the Border Collie is also one of the most long lived - with an expected life of 12.10 years. Bred first on the border between England and Scotland, it's often very successfully used to herd sheep. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Springer Spaniel The wonderfully bouncy Springer Spaniel is expected to live around 11.92 years. Before becoming loved family pets, they were used to flush out (or 'spring' - hence the name) and retrieve game by hunters. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales
