Taylor Swift's Lack of AMAs Announcement Still Results in ‘Reputation' Bump

Swifties had flooded the internet in recent weeks with predictions of a Taylor Swift Memorial Day Miracle – an appearance at the awards, most likely accompanied by an announcement of a new release, perhaps the long-awaited Reputation (Taylor's Version) re-recording. Unfortunately for the Swifties, the AMAs came and went without any appearances, announcements or drops from their fav. But hope clearly sprang eternal in the days leading up to the awards, at least on streaming: The 15 tracks on Reputation racked up a combined 11.3 million official on-demand U.S. streams across the first four days of this tracking week (May 23-26), ahead of the awards – a 14% gain from the equivalent period the prior, according to Luminate. And that bump was of course highest on Memorial Day, as the album racked up 2.4 million total streams on that day alone, a 29% gain from the prior Monday. 'Soul Survivor' was the breakout crossover hit 20 years ago for the rapper then known as Young Jeezy, as the Akon-assisted banger lifted to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped establish his Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 as one of the year's biggest rap albums. Two decades later, the street anthem is once again delighting music fans, though through a relatively unlikely conduit: a TikTok meme about dating gaffes. Tiktoker Hadley (@localyerbafein) stroke viral paydirt last week (May 21) when she shared a video that captured the story of a guy – presumably one she was seeing, or at least considering seeing – responding to her interest in law with a question about her watching the TV show Suits. The video ends with footage of Hadley serving as a courtroom attorney, with the caption 'holy fckin airball' – all, of course, set to 'Soul Survivor.' The clip quickly spread through the app, racking up 10 million views and 1.8 million likes, and inspiring a number of other users to share their own he-shoots, he-doesn't-score stories, with Akon and Jeezy again serving as the soundtrack. Consequently, the track exploded on streaming towards the end of last week. For the tracking week ending May 22, 'Soul Survivor' amassed over 3 million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate – fully doubling its stream count from the prior week – and it should be headed for an even bigger tally this week, as TikTok keeps putting up one 'holy fckin airball' after another. In 2017, two greats of popular music – pop icon Cher and rap legend Future – teamed up for an unlikely collab cover of Sly & The Family's soul-pop classic 'Everyday People.' Their rendition was featured in a Gap commercial that showcased the star pair meeting up on a staircase on an otherwise-blank set to discuss how Cher can't get the 1969 Hot 100-topper out of her head, leading to her crooning the song over a trappy beat. Meanwhile, Future attempts to fill in with harmonies and ad libs – in a mixture that, unsurprisingly, feels slightly less than organic. The awkward commercial has recently begun to recirculate around the internet, resulting in pairs of TikTokers recreating the visual in endearing clips gently poking at the stilted chemistry of the original. The Cher & Future 'Everyday People' is not currently available in full on DSPs, but of course the Family Stone original is there for the streaming – and folks have been evidently charmed enough by the improbable cover to revisit (or check out) the original. According to Luminate, over the first four days of this tracking week (May 23-26), 'Everyday People' is up to 309,000 official on-demand U.S. streams from 256,000 over the same period in the prior week, a gain of 21%. In this week's example of never knowing where a breakout hit might come from in 2025, we have Scottish dance producer Sam Gellaitry. His song 'Assumptions,' from the 2021 EP IV, has begun to percolate on streaming over the past month, thanks to the Russian dancer Руслан Айдаев, now known to the internet as Blue Shirt Guy – who has been a meme of some degree for years already for his full-bodied dance moves, shot from behind. Recent viral videos have paired the clip with Gellaitry's throbbing electro-pop instrumental, resulting in it going nuts on TikTok all over again – with many of the app's finest donning their best blue shirts and filming themselves shaking it from behind. Consequently, the four-year-old 'Assumpstions' has risen to the top of Gellaitry's Spotify page, and is now racking up over 2.2 million official on-demand U.S. streams a week, up 142% from three weeks earlier, according to Luminate. Her video, which has been viewed 50,000 times on TikTok as of reporting starts with the text overlay, "Told him I have a horse... 'What, like a thoroughbred?'". The video then cuts to a clip of a Welsh pony, with the 'holyairball,' hashtag. "My take on the trend is resorting back to my true love and passion in life – horses," she told Newsweek over email. "But more specifically, my horse; Ringo. He is a gorgeous, but scruffy and overly cute little Welsh pony stallion. I am definitely expected to have a big fancy, super expensive horse – but in reality, I have Ringo, who in turn – I wouldn't trade for the world," she said. Other creators have used their videos to highlight or poke fun at gender stereotypes. Maya and Hunter, a married couple who create content together posted their take on the video, which included a picture of Hunter at a graduation, with the text "Told them I went to law school." The next picture had the text overlay "oh he's probably the breadwinner." The final picture showed Maya working and Hunter next to her, doing housework. The creator Hadley took a similar approach in a video which has been viewed over 9 million times. "I told him I was really into law," the text reads, then "he said 'oh do you watch suits or something?'" with the clip then cutting to Hadley speaking in a professional setting. Chris Brown leads powerhouse lineup as Tycoon Festival makes Detroit debut Saturday
Before the Tycoon Music Festival became a star-studded annual event, says founder Anthony (Ant) Wilson, it was "just a spur-of-the-moment thing.' As the longtime manager of R&B superstar Chris Brown — who's headlining the latest edition of Tycoon this weekend in Detroit — Wilson operates in a busy orbit of artists. A new festival was a chance to bring together acts he deals with regularly, and that inaugural 2019 show in Atlanta featured Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Trey Songz and others. On Saturday at a sold-out Little Caesars Arena, Brown will once again lead the bill, topping a powerhouse lineup of R&B and hip-hop that includes Wiz Khalifa, Gucci Mane, Fabolous and Detroit rapper Skilla Baby. And there's a whole slew of unannounced acts on tap, performing both individual sets and collaborations. 'I want to focus on Detroit people,' Wilson says. 'Tycoon is always about surprise guests — there are more surprise guests than there are name guests. I intend to give (fans) more than their money's worth.' With this year's Tycoon fest happening on the eve of 4/20, the world's unofficial weed holiday, Wilson curated the lineup with a certain theme in mind. 'I don't smoke myself, but I wanted to bring some people who are known to smoke,' he says. 'So to celebrate 4/20 for everybody in Detroit, that's what it is — a little singing, a little smoking, so Detroit can have some fun.' As a Cleveland native, Wilson is well acquainted with the Motor City. He spent a lot of time in Detroit during his days working with Young Jeezy, including the 2013 signing of hip-hop collective Doughboyz Cashout to Jeezy's CTE World label. He's also an executive producer of the Starz series 'BMF,' the urban crime drama set in Detroit, whose local guest stars have included Eminem and Jalen Rose. The show's fourth season will roll out in June, but Wilson declines to drop any hints about the upcoming plot, saying only: 'There's a lot of Detroit in there.' So after runs in spots such as Atlanta and Houston, the Tycoon Music Festival deserves to happen in the D, Wilson says. 'I just love Detroit,' he says. 'And Detroit always gave me so much love that I was like: I just want to give back.' Most recently, he headed to town in January with his girlfriend, R&B star Monica, where the couple made a splash at a Detroit Pistons game, strikingly outfitted in coats from Dittrich Furs. Monica will once again be dressed to impress Saturday when she's among the VIPs in the house as Tycoon takes over LCA. 'She fell in love with Detroit, too, so she's all excited. She picked out her outfit already — so my accountant tells me,' Wilson says with a laugh. It doesn't hurt that Detroit has been one of the strongest markets for Chris Brown, stretching back to his early shows at venues such as Joe Louis Arena. The Tycoon fest comes less than a year after Brown headlined a sold-out Little Caesars Arena, and he'll be back in August for a pair of dates at Ford Field, part of his Breezy Bowl XX tour. He began rehearsals three weeks ago. Twenty years after breaking out with 'Run It!,' Brown's career seems to have hit a new level. His latest record, '11:11,' earned him four nominations and a win for best R&B album at last year's Grammy Awards, while the hit single 'Residuals' sparked a viral singalong craze across social media. Along with Brown's upcoming world stadium tour — his first yet — it marks a fresh peak for the 35-year-old singer-dancer. It's the sort of career acceleration not often experienced by an artist two decades in. 'Yeah, and thank God, too. We're very grateful for that,' says Wilson. 'I hope that it just keeps going.' When the 'Residuals' challenge lit up the Internet earlier this year, Brown thanked participating artists and fans, calling it a testament to the power of 'real R&B.' His manager agrees. 'I feel like people are just now seeing the the difference between somebody with a song and a performer,' says Wilson. 'You know, just look at other artists and you can see the difference. You could see the artist development that he had to go through. And I feel like that's what the music game has been missing.'
