St Matthew's Academy pupil flies the flag on national stage for North Ayrshire
National acclaim for North Ayrshire pupil. A talented youngster from a Saltcoats school who celebrated major success on the local stage hit the high notes as she flew the flag for North Ayrshire at a prestigious national competition. St Matthew's Academy pupil, Stella McIntyre, represented North Ayrshire at the Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer of the Year Final last weekend. Stella, who is North Ayrshire's Young Musician of the Year, performed with one of Scotland's oldest musical instruments, the Clarsach. The national competition was held at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she competed alongside young musicians from all over the country. Stella thanked her teachers, North Ayrshire Music Service, friends, family and fellow local young musicians for their support. The national competition provided her with a fantastic opportunity to shine and showcase the heritage, tradition and modernism of playing one of Scotland's oldest musical instruments. She said: 'I feel honoured and excited to have performed in this year's Scottish Young Musicians Final. It's been such a great experience to get some exposure. Thanks to everyone for their support." Ronan Watson, North Ayrshire Music Service Manager, feels Stella now has some exciting times ahead. He said: "We are incredibly proud of Stella. She has been a wonderful advocate for instrumental music in North Ayrshire with her involvement and support for music performances both in school and with the Music Service. 'An exciting musical pathway now lies before her, and we look forward to watching her journey.' Congratulations goes to accordionist Inver Shand from Fife who was awarded the overall prize as Scottish Young Musicians Solo Performer of the Year for 2025. Councillor Shaun Macaulay, Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, hailed the youngster's achievements. He said: 'We are incredibly proud of Stella and her fantastic performance at the Final of Scottish Young Musicians. 'Although she didn't come out on top overall, she once again put North Ayrshire on the map and her talent did not go unnoticed. Well done Stella for your stellar performance!' Stella performed a beautiful programme featuring Mexican Monterey – Savourna Stevenson and An t-Eilean Muileach (The Isla of Mull) – Dougal McPhail arr. Savourna Stevenson. The judging panel and audience enjoyed the mix of styles in her performance which she performed skilfully and with wonderful musical attention.

Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year 2024 to perform in Stroud
GLOUCESTERSHIRE'S Young Musician of the Year 2024 is performing in a Woodchester church. Violinist James Li will play Mozart's Violin Concerto No 1 alongside the Capriol Chamber Orchestra at the concert on Saturday, June 7. The concert will feature additional Schubert and Mendelssohn pieces, with Jonathan Trim as the conductor, and orchestra leader Natasha Bowen-Jones. The event will take place at St Mary's Church, North Woodchester, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £14 with reduced fees for pre-purchased tickets and eligible concessions. They are available from the Sub Rooms and the Capriol Orchestra website.

East Ayrshire pupils hit the high notes in Young Musician of the Year competition
Ten musicians battled for the top prize. East Ayrshire youngsters hit the high notes as 10 talented musicians battled it out for in the Music Service's East Ayrshire Young Musician of the Year competition. Held at Grange Academy in Kilmarnock, the competition was adjudicated by Laura MacMillan, Principal Teacher of Music at Belmont Academy, and Graeme Barclay, owner and founder of Beat Buddies Music. Competing in the final were – Gregor from Stewarton Academy (marimba), Max from Loudoun Academy (saxophone), Matthew from Kilmarnock Academy (piano), Eilidh from Grange Academy (voice), Jai from The Robert Burns Academy (bagpipes), Ben from Loudoun Academy (guitar), Mariella from Kilmarnock Academy (voice), Lily from Stewarton Academy (clarinet), Ethan from Grange Academy (piano) and Sophie from Doon Academy (cornet). And it was Gregor from Stewarton Academy who won the competition playing a beautiful piece called Ney Rosauro's Marimba Concerto. Sophie from Doon Academy and Ethan from Grange Academy were runners-up. Gregor will now also be representing East Ayrshire at the Scottish Young Musician national final at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland next month. Provost Claire Leitch attended the competition with Councillor Elaine Cowan, and was on hand to present the winners with their awards. She said: 'What an honour to attend the East Ayrshire Young Musician of the Year competition, to hear the incredible talent of our young people and congratulate our winner – Gregor and runners-up - Sophie and Ethan. 'Heartfelt thanks go to the judges Laura MacMillan and Graeme Barclay, they really did have a tough job; the standard of performance was exceptional. 'For musicians, there is nothing like performing to a live audience so thanks go to the Music Service, led by Dr Julie Carrie, for giving our young people this wonderful opportunity.'
