News: K League's Foreign Goalkeeper Ban to be Scrapped From 2026
The K League will, from 2026, allow foreign goalkeepers, scrapping a ban that had been in place since 1999. Other rules have been tweaked regarding K League 2 matchday squad sizes and eligibility for the Young Player of the Year Award. The Korea Professional Football League held its third board meeting of 2025 on Thursday, the 19th, at the Football Centre in Sinmunno, Seoul. The following items were resolved: Foreign goalkeepers to be permitted from 2026 Increase in squad size for K League 2 matches Inclusion of all homegrown players in eligibility for the Young Player of the Year Award Appointment of new board members Review of disciplinary ruling regarding FC Anyang. Foreign Goalkeepers Allowed from 2026 From 2026, the registration of foreign goalkeepers will be permitted. During the mid-1990s, when the K League operated with just eight teams, most clubs fielded foreign goalkeepers as first-choice players. To foster the development of domestic goalkeepers, the League began restricting the number of appearances by foreign goalkeepers from 1996, eventually imposing a full ban on their registration from 1999. Advertisement The Board explained that the goalkeeper position, being highly specialised, had seen disproportionate wage increases for domestic players due to the restriction. Furthermore, as the number of clubs has significantly increased since the initial ban, sufficient opportunities for domestic goalkeepers remain even with the inclusion of foreign players. Accordingly, the clause mandating that goalkeepers be domestic players will be removed from the K League regulations from 2026, applying to both K League 1 and K League 2. K League 2 Matchday Squad Size to Increase to 20 from 2026 From the 2026 season, the K League 2 matchday squad size will be expanded from the current 18 players to a maximum of 20. K League 1 has already implemented the 20-player squad format starting from the 2024 season. Currently, K League 2 matchday squads consist of 11 starting players and seven substitutes, totalling 18, but this will change to 11 starters and nine substitutes. The Board cited improved tactical flexibility through more substitution options and the need to ensure domestic player opportunities as reasons for the change, particularly given the removal of the AFC and ASEAN foreign player quotas and the resulting increase in the number of foreign players who can be registered regardless of nationality. Homegrown Players Eligible for Young Player of the Year Award Eligibility for the Young Player of the Year Award, previously limited to Korean nationals aged 23 and under, will be extended to include all 'homegrown players'. The Board stated that players who have been developed within the domestic football system and signed as professionals with K League clubs, thereby holding the same status as Korean players, should equally be considered eligible for the award. Appointment of New Board Members Kim Seung-hee, Executive Director of the Korea Football Association, and Kwon Il, General Manager of Gimpo FC, have been appointed as new members of the League's Board of Directors. Review of FC Anyang Disciplinary Decision The League has decided to uphold the disciplinary committee's decision and dismiss FC Anyang's appeal regarding a fine of 10 million KRW. Last month, on Tuesday the 20th, Mayor Choi Dae-ho, the club owner of FC Anyang, held a public press conference at Anyang Sports Complex's media room where he made negative remarks about refereeing decisions and actions deemed to have defamed the K League and harmed its reputation.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher's pick for Young Player of the Season is snubbed ENTIRELY from the Premier League's final shortlist
The Premier League released their nominees for the prestigious Young Player of the Year award on Thursday, and there was one notable absence after an exceptional breakout campaign. The Young Player of the Year is, unsurprisingly, handed out to the youngster who has most excelled in the Premier League over the previous campaign, with Cole Palmer winning last term. Though Arsenal saw central defender William Saliba make the shortlist, and Declan Rice in the running for Player of the Year, many fans will have perhaps been confused to not see another name. And they will likely be joined by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, who both claimed Myles Lewis-Skelly had been the league's finest young player this season on a podcast following his meteoric rise. After starring in the academy as a midfielder, Mikel Arteta informed the teenager that if he wants to break into the fold he should target the left back spot, and he did just that, coming in as an emergency replacement playing 21 times in the league. Speaking on the It's Called Soccer! podcast, both former Premier League greats were asked for their picks of the brightest talents, and were unanimous in their votes for who should win the award. 'I'll go for Lewis-Skelly,' began former Manchester United right back Neville. 'He looks like he's been there forever, just the way he's slotted in there. I think it was a position that was causing Arsenal a problem. I think he's an unbelievable talent, and his temperament's fantastic. 'On the ball, the way he dribbles past people it just mesmerises me really, it shouldn't be happening at any age let alone being at that age.' And Carragher was quick to join in on the acclaim, citing one of his most impressive performances of a blistering season, though it fell outside the Premier League's remit. 'I'd say him as well, the other one I was thinking about was [Dean] Huijsen, at the back for Bournemouth I'm a huge fan of his,' he added. 'But when you think of the performances Lewis-Skelly's put in, and the arenas he's put them in, you know, I'm thinking about him in the Bernabeu - yeah I'll go with him.' The list in full was made up of Saliba, Huijsen, Palmer, Ryan Gravenberch, Liam Delap, Anthony Elanga, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro. This season Lewis-Skelly has played 37 times for the senior team, scoring once - a stunning effort against Manchester City in the 5-1 win that saw him make headlines for mocking Erling Haaland's celebration. Off the back of his emergence as an elite left back he also earned a call-up to Thomas Tuchel's first England squad. He marked his debut in typical fashion, scoring in the first half of a 2-0 win against Albania at Wembley to stake a claim for the No 3 shirt at next summer's World Cup. His season continued to go from strength to strength with an impressive display in both legs against Real Madrid in the Champions League, the biggest stage he had featured on to date at the age of 18, but remained unfazed. Given the strength of his performances, Arsenal's previous problem-position of left back appears a lot more secure, potentially allowing them to focus a lot further up the pitch when it comes to the transfer market this summer.

Arsenal fans baffled as Lewis-Skelly is beaten by team-mate, 24, to Premier League Young Player of the Year nomination
ARSENAL fans have demanded a rule change to the Premier League's Young Player of the Year award. The eight stars nominated for this season's accolade have been announced with Myles Lewis-Skelly missing out. 4 4 But to the surprise of Arsenal supporters, 24-year-old William Saliba made the cut instead. Liam Delap (Ipswich), Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest), Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool), Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Joao Pedro (Brighton) and Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa) complete the list of nominees. Many expected Lewis-Skelly to be one of them after a stunning breakthrough season. The 18-year-old has featured 21 times in the Premier League this term and has made the left-back spot his own following his start in December. Lewis-Skelly's good form even saw him earn a first senior England call-up in March. But he has not been nominated with many of the players chosen aged between 22 and 24. Premier League rules state you are eligible for the Young Player of the Year award if you are 23 or under at the start of the campaign. But many fans want a change to the regulations, with one saying: "It should be Under-21 players only." 4 4 Another added: "They really need to rethink the 'Young' Player of the Season. Because not having Lewis-Skelly but having 24-year-old Saliba makes no sense." A third wrote: "They need a Rookie of the Year award to go along side this for newcomers/younger players." Gravenberch has also been nominated for the senior Player of the Season award after helping Liverpool win the league. His team-mates Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk join him on the list. Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood (Nottingham Forest), Alexander Isak (Newcastle), Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) and Declan Rice (Arsenal) are the other contenders.

Man United star, 18, wins club's coveted Young Player of the Year award after breakthrough season under Ruben Amorim
Harry Amass has been named Manchester United 's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year after a breakthrough season for the talented defender. Amass, 18, was handed his first appearance for the senior side off the bench in the win at Leicester in March before making his full debut in the defeat by Newcastle last month. The left-back has since started four more Premier League games under Ruben Amorim, playing 90 minutes in the losses at Brentford and at home to West Ham. He also featured in the home Europa League matches against Lyon and Athletic Club. The teenager arrived at United from Watford in 2023 and has thrived with both the Under-18 and Under-21 teams. While Erik ten Hag was in charge Amass was routinely training with the first team and made the bench for a number of first team games. Amass has also represented England U18s on seven occasions this season, captaining the young Lions against Portugal in victory in March. 'I think [the debut] was a feeling of relief,' Amass said recently. 'I've been waiting for a long time, being patient so when it finally happened, I got into the dressing room and took it all in for a moment by myself. 'When I first signed, it was about developing as a player, getting better, which I think I've done; it was about enjoying my football, which I think I've done with all the experiences and the trophies, and then it was about getting first-team football. And that's come as well. 'So I think all the reasons I've signed have happened. Next is to keep working hard, to show that people can trust me and that I'm a good person off the pitch as well as a good player. Keep giving my best and hopefully get more minutes.' Amass joins a prestigious list of winners of the Young Player of the Year award, named after United's legendary coach Jimmy Murphy. Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo are among the stars to have received the prize.
