Miley Cyrus Tells Monica Lewinsky About Losing 'Everything': 'My 2013 Is Your 1998'

Miley Cyrus says she 'lost everything' during a turbulent period of her life, following her Disney Channel days. The singer reflected on the difficult chapter in her life during an appearance on Monica Lewinsky's 'Reclaiming' podcast posted Wednesday. 'My 2013 is your 1998, because that was the time where I just got just hit so hard and I was so embarrassed,' Cyrus told Lewinsky. 'I mean, there was even a time where my brother and sister didn't want to go to school because of how humiliated they were to be related to me.' 'I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally,' Cyrus shared. 'You know, if I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me, because they didn't want to be with a woman [with] that sexual expression part ― [it] was not for them.' 'I was engaged at the time ― that didn't work out,' Cyrus said, referencing her broken engagement with her now-ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. 'I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only,' she said. 'And the fact that I would pose nude or dance in very little clothes or show my body was making them feel like I was taking something away that was meant to be for them.' The 'Flowers' singer added that she had a really hard time dating and also interacting with her family. 'It was really hard for me to go home and see my dad and, like, look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed,' she said, later adding, 'Going home and seeing my grandparents was just mortifying.' Cyrus, who is currently on a press tour to promote her newest album, also reflected recently on how she attempted to rehabilitate her professional life in order to keep a 'happy home' with Hemsworth. 'When me and Liam split up the first time with 'Bangerz,' it was because it was like I was this provocateur and it was highly sexualized,' Cyrus said during an appearance on the 'Every Single Album' podcast last week. Four years after 'Bangerz,' Cyrus released an album called 'Younger Now,' with which she says she tried to play 'into this innocence.' 'If I'm younger now, if I'm less awake as this sexual woman publicly, then this is going to be the way that I can keep a happy home,' she shared. Miley Cyrus Bangerz Era, Hip-Hop Comments Divide Fans

In 2017, Miley Cyrus released her sixth studio album Younger Now, which was described by Pitchfork as a bold 'statement of reinvention' following her infamous Bangerz era. When Miley released her self-described 'dirty south hip-hop' album Bangerz* in 2013, she embraced a very provocative persona, boldly cutting her hair off, singing about topics like recreational drug use, and, of course, twerking on Robin Thicke at the VMAs. After a few years, Miley's public image totally shifted. She grew out her hair, rekindled her relationship with Liam Hemsworth*, and started penning songs about inoffensive topics. Enter: Younger Now. While she was promoting the 2017 album, Miley memorably made critical remarks of hip-hop — the same genre that had influenced Bangerz. She told Billboard, 'I also love that new Kendrick [Lamar] song ['Humble']: 'Show me somethin' natural like ass with some stretch marks.' I love that because it's not, 'Come sit on my dick, suck on my cock.' I can't listen to that anymore. That's what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much, 'Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock' — I am so not that.' Fast forward to today, and Miley has reflected further on her relationship with hip-hop. During a recent appearance on the Every Single Album podcast, Miley was asked if she was 'playing a character' during her Bangerz era. She replied, 'I really did what I wanted to do…It was marketed not just by me, but just by the way that the press perceived it, as this is like some rebellious thing…That to me, that's a strategy, and I, that's not really what I do.' Then, when asked if she had 'fallen in love' with hip-hop, Miley said, 'Yes, because all my friends, that's all we listened to,' adding, 'It's not a genre, it's a statement.' 'For me, hip-hop at the time was my soul. [Those were] the concerts that I was sneaking out to go to. That was the thing that my parents wouldn't let me listen to, you know,' she went on. 'I wasn't unique in the fact that I was a white girl listening to hip-hop,' she said before quipping, 'Like, just go look at a fucking Coachella set list.' Miley was later asked if she had 'any different perspective' on her relationship with hip-hop now, and whether or not she felt differently about inserting herself into that world because she spent a lot of time listening to the genre. She replied, 'I wasn't just listening like a regular person with headphones on to Juicy J, I was friends with Juicy J, actually. So like, I don't know what to say. Like, I was actually smoking fat fucking wax bowls with Wiz Khalifa. Like, I'm not faking!' Reacting to Miley's comments, several fans were left pretty disappointed that she avoided taking 'accountability' for her 'cultural appropriation.' 'she didn't want to be a Disney star anymore. she wanted to be edgy. She benefited from the 'lifestyle' then rejected it when it no longer suited her image. And yes, people change their tastes as they grow older, but she should at least be able to acknowledge all of this after all these years with a few less 'likes' and excuses,' someone said, while another person wrote: 'Every time I think she's going to make a point it doesn't happen. Girl.' Let me know what you think below. You can find Miley's full interview here.

Miley Cyrus Was ‘Less Sexual' When She Was With Liam Hemsworth

recently got candid about her 'less sexual' persona while she was with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. The singer-actor made headlines throughout the 2010s for her on-and-off relationship with the Australian actor, as well as for her vastly different eras. Cyrus has now opened up about the reason behind the shift in her public image. The 'Hannah Montana' star also revealed that it was a way to make her relationship work with Hemsworth. During a recent interview, Miley Cyrus revealed what she was like during her relationship with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. While appearing on the 'Every Single Album' podcast, the 32-year-old explained the shift in her persona when she got back together with the Australian actor. The former couple's first split came around the time Cyrus released her album 'Bangerz' in 2013. The era continues to be remembered as it marked a shift from the singer's sweet Disney image to a more rebellious one, from rocking short hairstyles to donning bold outfits. While talking on the podcast, Cyrus recalled, 'I think that when me and Liam split up the first time with 'Bangerz,' it was because it was like, I was this provocateur and it was, like, highly sexualized.' However, Cyrus went through a 'complete 180' switch for her album 'Younger Now,' which was released in 2017. This came more than a year after she and Hemsworth rekindled their romance. The former pair got engaged for the second time in 2016 and tied the knot two years later. Meanwhile, Cyrus continued to explain her new persona. The musician shared that for 'Younger Now,' she 'kind of, like, played into this innocence.' Cyrus said this was because she thought 'that was a way to keep and a way to stay.' She added, 'If I'm younger now, if I'm less, like, awake as, like, this sexual woman publicly, then this is going to be the way that I can keep, like, a happy home.' Cyrus' divorce from Hemsworth was finalized in 2020. Meanwhile, the Disney Channel alum continued to share where she stands with her latest album, 'Something Beautiful.' She said, 'I do have a really lovely personal life.' Cyrus added, 'My career is exactly how I want it to be.' Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth Split Over Her Public Image

We all remember Miley Cyrus's Bangerz era, which saw the former Disney star stepping away from her squeaky-clean image and embracing a rebellious, provocative persona. Around that time that she released the Bangerz album in 2013, Miley found herself embroiled in a number of memorable controversies — like the time she twerked on Robin Thicke during a VMAs performance, or when she stripped naked in her 'Wrecking Ball' music video. At this time, Miley was in a relationship with — and temporarily engaged to — Liam Hemsworth, whom she met on the set of The Last Song years prior. The pair got engaged for the first time back in May 2012, though they called it off the following September. In 2016, news broke that Miley and Liam had rekindled their relationship and gotten engaged again. By late 2018, the pair were married — though they parted ways less than a year later. During this time, Miley released her sixth studio album titled Younger Now, which marked a notable shift from her previous Bangerz era. The project was described by Pitchfork as a glimpse into Miley's 'post-neon maturity' that made a bold 'statement of reinvention,' with less songs about recreational drug use and being a "female rebel" and more inoffensive tracks — like 'Younger Now,' which detailed the way she'd grown up and changed, and 'Malbu,' which was about her rekindled relationship with Liam. Miley notably switched up her public image around the release of Younger Now too, growing her hair out after famously rocking various shorter styles for years. Last week, Miley sat down on the Every Single Album podcast to discuss her shift in public image. When asked about why she made a 'complete 180,' the singer candidly shared, 'I think that when me and Liam split up the first time with Bangerz, it was because it was like I was this provocateur and it was highly sexualized.' 'And so for Younger Now, the album, the reason I kind of like played into this innocence was because I think that was a way to keep and a way to stay…If I'm younger now, if I'm less awake as this sexual woman publicly, then this is going to be the way that I can keep a happy home,' she shared. Miley went on to recall feeling a 'duty' to protect Liam's image when she was in a relationship with him. 'Liam was also a part of other big franchises like The Hunger Games, and his brother is a Marvel superhero. And so I was also representing the family,' she said. 'And so I felt like I needed to, and I, you know, it was my duty too, because my plan was this time, I didn't want the relationship to fall apart. I wanted it to stay intact. And the reason why it didn't work during Bangerz was because of that.' You can find Miley's full appearance on the Every Single Album podcast here.

Miley Cyrus Wears Nude Mesh Schiaparelli Gown to 'Something Beautiful' Premiere

On Friday, Miley Cyrus attended the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her new visual album, Something Beautiful, wearing a SS25 haute couture Schiaparelli gown by Daniel Roseberry. The net dress was in woven nude fabric and hung with crystal water drops that made the star shimmer as she arrived. The wide weaving revealed her nude bodysuit underneath. The gown's skirt ended in a dramatic fringe and she wore a matching fringe stole over the ensemble, allowing it to drape down from her arms. She accessorized with Schiaparelli's Anatomy Jewelry Bag and wore a pair of nude pointed-toe heels. Her hair was parted to the side and in her ears were a pair of dangling crystal drop earrings. Cyrus wore a second Schiaparelli look to the after-party from the fashion house's RTW FW25/26 collection, a bustier dress embroidered with golden and silver mirrors in an organic pattern. She was seen walking hand-in-hand with her boyfriend, Maxx Morando, carrying a black clutch and wearing gold pointed-toe heels. In a recent interview on the Every Single Album podcast, Cyrus talked about her former relationship with Liam Hemsworth, who she met in 2009. While talking about her 'Younger Now' era, Cyrus brought up Hemsworth and how she embraced 'innocence' in her image at that time as a way to reconnect with him in her personal life. 'When me and Liam split up the first time with 'Bangerz' because I was this provocateur, like, highly sexualized,' she shared. 'For 'Younger Now', the reason I kind of played into this innocence was because I think it was a way to keep—a way to stay—by being younger now and a less sexualized woman publicly, and this was a way to keep a happy home.' Cyrus and Hemsworth were off-and-on from 2010 to 2012, then got married in 2018. They filed for divorce before reaching one year of marriage. Hemsworth went on to date model Gabriella Brooks, while Cyrus connected with Morando.
