Baniyas impress on opening day of Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship
ABU DHABI: Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club seized an early lead on the first day of the fourth round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which was held on Friday at Zayed Sports City's Mubadala Arena. Al-Jazira claimed second place, while MOD UAE rounded out the top three. Yousef Abdullah Al-Batran, board member of the UAEJJF, praised the generosity of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, in doubling the championship's prize money. He said the move reflected the UAE leadership's commitment to the development of top-level sports, especially jiu-jitsu, which has become the country's national sport. Al-Batran said: 'The fourth round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship is especially important. It marks a key moment in the competition and gives us a chance to evaluate club performances and how well the athletes are prepared to continue their success in the upcoming stages.' Jasem Al-Marzooqi, the CEO of the Advanced Military Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Center, who was attending the event, affirmed that the strong organization of the event reflected the UAE's ambition to position itself as a leading global sports destination. He said: 'The championship is progressing with every round. Both the technical and organizational levels show how successful the overall system is, giving athletes the ideal environment to grow and excel.' Igor Lacerda, the coach of the Sharjah Self-Defense Sports Club's youth team, said: 'This round once again confirms the incredible progress the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship is making across the board. It gave us as coaches extra motivation. 'We focused our preparations on the mental and tactical aspects, and we are working to make the best use of our athletes' capabilities. From the start of the season our goal has been clear: to strongly compete for the title. We believe this path requires consistent performance and discipline.' Bouchaib El-Idrissi of Morocco, who was representing Baniyas, took gold in the men's masters' brown/black belt 62 kg division, and said: 'This achievement means a lot to me, especially since I faced an opponent in the final who was 20 years younger. 'This championship is a unique platform for athletes of all ages to showcase their talent and chase their goals. I sincerely thank the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation and the organizers for the tremendous effort they put into delivering such a professional event and creating a competitive environment that matches our ambitions and pushes us to give our best.'

Emirati champion Mana Al Marzouqi, gold medalist in the 94kg division, also shared his excitement, stating: 'It was an incredible day. I performed in a way that reflects the hard work and preparation I've put in. This event is one of the highlights of my sports journey.' The championship continues tomorrow with the advanced divisions, where athletes in the brown and black belt categories will compete. Competitions for U12 and kids categories were held on the final day which saw Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club claiming the top spot in the medal standings, with Sharjah Self-Defense Sports Club securing second place and Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club finishing third. The final day saw strong support from families and jiu-jitsu fans, who gathered to cheer on the participants. Their presence added to the event's energetic atmosphere and strengthened community ties, further establishing the championship as a prominent platform for social and cultural engagement. The competitions were attended, and the winners crowned, by a host of dignitaries, including H.E. Abdulmunem Alsayed Mohammed Alhashmi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, President of the Ju-Jitsu Asian Union, and Senior Vice President of the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation; H.E. I trained hard with my coach and teammates and put in a lot of effort to prepare. I started practising jiu-jitsu four years ago with my brother Khalid and sister Maya. I thank my family for always encouraging me, and I hope to compete in more tournaments and win more medals.' UAE National MMA Championship 3 concludes on a high note as more than 300 athletes take part

More than 300 male and female athletes from different age groups participated, attracting crowds that reflect the sport's growing popularity in the country. The final day of the championship witnessed a remarkable turnout in the Youth A (16–17 years old) and Adult (18 years and above) categories. The youth category impressed with skillful performances, while the adult bouts stood out for their intensity and competitiveness, energising the crowd throughout the day. His Excellency Yousef Abdullah Al Batran, Board Member of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation, praised the success of the third edition of the championship, highlighting the strong turnout and broad participation from clubs and academies across the country. He said, 'The UAE National MMA Championship supports the Federation's vision of growing the practitioner base, identifying talent, preparing future champions, and strengthening the presence of mixed martial arts in the local sports scene. The involvement of different age groups reflects our commitment to building generations capable of competing at the highest levels locally, regionally, or internationally.' He added, 'This third edition is also a key milestone in preparing our athletes for upcoming competitions, especially the sixth edition of the IMMAF Youth World Championship, which will take place in Abu Dhabi in July 2025.' Ekonian Andenet, a coach at ADMA Academy, said, 'Our team took part in today's competitions with more than 40 male and female athletes. This tournament is significant to us because it brings together top-level participants from clubs and academies across the country. It gives our athletes a valuable chance to test their skills, apply what they've learned in training, and prove they can win and earn medals. It also helps strengthen their preparation for international competitions.' Saif Al Jneibi from ADMA, who won gold in the Youth Boys / Male / Youth A / Welterweight (-77.1kg) division, said, 'I'm happy to be competing in the tournament for the second time. I lost in the last edition by submission, but I didn't give up and kept training hard. I had strong support from my family, coach, and teammates at the club, and today I managed to take first place.
