Sharjah plans to convert single-lane roads to dual carriageways to ease traffic flow
A comprehensive plan aimed at improving the emirate's road infrastructure is being implemented, Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), revealed. According to the plan, a number of single-lane roads would be converted into dual carriageways and connected directly to main roads, thereby enhancing traffic flow and meeting the growing needs of the population, he said. SRTA is continuously working to implement vital projects in all areas of the emirate and the latest project completed was the development of Abu Amr Al Basri Street in the Al Rahmaniya suburb, in front of the Rahmaniya Mall, Al Othmani said during a conversation with the Direct Line programme. The street was converted from a single-lane road to a dual road with two lanes in each direction and was directly connected to the Emirates Road, thereby contributing to significantly facilitating traffic flow in the area, he added. The conversion plan would cover a number of roads in various areas including the road linking Al Shaghrafa and Kshisha areas, the implementation of which is scheduled to begin before the end of this year, he said. These projects are proceeding in accordance with the directives of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who places great importance on developing infrastructure in densely populated areas, he added. Al Othmani emphasized that these efforts are part of the SRTA's commitment to enhancing the comfort of road users and achieving the highest standards of safety and well-being for all members of society. SRTA is adopting a fixed work plan that includes the regular opening of new lanes to meet the needs of residents and improve quality of life, he said.

With a surge in travel expected across Sharjah and beyond, SRTA will operate 180 buses across the emirate, delivering more than 5,600 trips across four days. To manage the holiday rush, bus frequency will increase to every five minutes during peak hours, down from the usual 45 minutes, dramatically reducing wait times for passengers. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. In Sharjah City, the Authority will run 1,144 daily trips across 12 routes with 104 buses covering 543 stops, making travel between neighbourhoods faster and more efficient. Additional staff will be deployed at key stations, particularly Jubail Bus Station, which will remain open from early morning until late evening. In a major highlight for intercity travellers, a special boat service between Sharjah and Dubai will operate four times daily during Eid. Departing from Sharjah's Aquarium Station and arriving at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, the marine route is a collaboration between SRTA and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, offering scenic and efficient transport between the emirates. SRTA is also working with Oman's national transport company, Mwasalat, to operate international route 203. This bus service connects the Emirate to Muscat, Oman's capital, with two daily trips from Jubail Station to Al Athaiba in Muscat, stopping at several destinations along the route. Flexible, direct mobility solution This innovative service offers passengers a flexible and direct mode of transport from their homes to their daily destinations, particularly in areas not fully served by the current public bus network. It promotes the concept of an integrated transport system across the emirate. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), emphasised the need for a flexible, sustainable public transport system in light of Sharjah's rapid urban and population expansion. The On-Demand Buses service reflects SRTA's vision for reducing private vehicle use, thereby lowering congestion and carbon emissions. Enhancing quality of life through smart transport Al Othmani added that public transport is central to improving quality of life and mobility within the emirate. SRTA continues to invest in modern transport technologies and expand smart services for all while committing to a safe and sustainable transport environment that aligns with Sharjah's strategic vision for a more balanced and prosperous urban future. Affordable, smart and user-friendly The first phase includes two buses operating daily from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, with a nominal fare of AED 8 per trip. Children under five travel for free. Users can request and track buses in real time via a smart app, which also allows for cashless payments and instant quality feedback. The system enables users to set their pick-up and drop-off points without being restricted to fixed bus stops or schedules, offering flexibility tailored to residents' and visitors' needs. Smart features Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at SRTA, stated that buses are equipped with internal surveillance cameras to ensure a safe travel environment. Linked to AI systems, the buses collect real-time data on passenger numbers, demographics, and usage patterns, enabling data-driven decision-making for improved operations and future planning. The buses are also equipped to accommodate people of determination, with features that ensure easy boarding and movement. The launch coincided with the Eid Al-Adha holidays—an ideal time due to increased travel activity. The initiative is part of SRTA's long-term strategy for a scalable, smart, and sustainable transport network. With an increase in people wanting to travel during this festive time, the SRTA is stepping up its services to ensure everyone can move smoothly between different areas in Sharjah and beyond. He noted that during the Eid holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. During peak times, buses will come every 5 minutes instead of the usual 45-minute wait. This means shorter waiting times and more convenience for everyone traveling. The authority is committed to making travel easy for people visiting family or exploring popular destinations, both within the emirate and outside it.
