13yo among group of alleged car thieves

Police say they tracked two cars taken from the city suburbs of Bishopdale and St Albans to Pegasus. Photo: RNZ / Richard Tindiller A 13-year-old boy was among five people arrested early on Wednesday morning for stealing cars north of Christchurch. Police say they tracked two cars taken from the city suburbs of Bishopdale and St Albans to Pegasus. Officers used road spikes to stop them, but before they could be apprehended Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said they tried to steal a third vehicle, "but all they've done is break a window and make a mess of the ignition - and sadly, that's a headache for yet another car owner". The 13 year-old was referred to Youth Services. The others were aged up to 23, and will appear at Christchurch's district and youth courts on charges including vehicle theft, failing to stop and possessing an air rifle. "We know car theft is an ongoing problem and urge vehicle owners to purchase immobilisers or steering wheel locks if they have to park on the street," McDaniel said. "Even with attempted car theft, it's more than an inconvenience, because offenders can cause a lot of damage to the ignition when they're attempting to start the car. This offending has a real impact on real people's lives, and we need the community's help to prevent it." US Supreme Court sides with Ohio woman in 'reverse discrimination' case

The US Supreme Court has sided with an Ohio woman who alleged she was discriminated against at her job because she is justices voted unanimously in a ruling focused on evidence standards that could make it easier to file similar "reverse discrimination" cases. Marlean Ames said that despite working for the Ohio Department of Youth Services for more than 20 years, she was denied a promotion and then demoted. She had appealed to the court to challenge the standards required to prove her decision effectively lowers the burden of proof required for people who are members of a majority group - such as white or heterosexual people - to make discrimination claims. US court precedent covering some states, including Ohio, had required that members of majority groups show additional "background circumstances" to prove their case or evidence showing a pattern of discrimination. The court has now ruled that the standard of evidence for a discrimination claim should be the same, regardless of a person's court did not consider Ms Ames' original discrimination suit. Ms Ames had said she had positive performance reviews, but a promotion she sought was given to a lesbian. She was then demoted and her job was given to a gay man. In a lawsuit, she argued her employer had a preference for LGBTQ staff members and denied her opportunities because she identifies as straight. Lower courts ruled that she had failed to provide sufficient evidence of her claim, propelling the burden of proof question to the Supreme Court. At a February hearing, justices on both sides ideologically appeared sympathetic to her argument.

Sweet start to summer at Pekin Public Library's Candy Land Adventure

PEKIN, Ill. (WMBD) — Summer kicked off in the sweetest way at the Pekin Public Library, where more than 500 people and families stepped into a life-sized game of Candy Land. The event was the library's Summer Adventure Kickoff Party, and was one of the largest turnouts in the library's history. Library staff say the goal was to spark joy, bring the community together, and encourage a love of reading as summer begins. 'It's very important because then they can keep up on their reading skills,' said Catrina Klassen, Head of Youth Services at Pekin Public Library. 'So then when they go into the school year, next year they're ready to go. And then teachers don't have to go back and re-teach some of those skills so that they can keep up on those skills throughout the summer.' The event was held on Saturday, May 31, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., which had the library transformed into a colorful, candy-themed wonderland to launch its annual Summer Reading Program with imagination and excitement. Children followed a rainbow path through the library, picking up their Summer Reading Game Cards and exploring a magical land of sweet surprises. Families enjoyed a day packed with fun, including a bouncy house, balloon artists, interactive games, and meet-and-greet moments with Sonic and Mario, adding to the excitement for kids of all ages. Klassen also explained the motivation behind this year's program theme. 'Illinois does like a summer reading theme for all the libraries, so 'Level Up' was the whole thing for the state of Illinois, which I think is a great motivator because kids love games. So this is a great way to get them to want to read.' Whether bouncing, reading, or racing through Candy Land, families left with big smiles — and even bigger stacks of books.
