Alaska-based river guide dies on rafting trip near B.C.-Yukon border

An American woman is dead after river-rafting mishap last weekend near the B.C.-Yukon border. Yukon's coroner said Thursday that 33-year-old Marin Elizabeth Pitt, an experienced river guide, died while out on a group excursion down the Blanchard and Tatshenshini Rivers. A news release says that the group of 24 people — all river guides based out of Haines, Alaska — had a day off on Sunday and were enjoying a recreational paddle when the incident happened. The area is a popular spot for guided rafting trips. The trouble began when the group, divided among four rafts, reached some rapids at the confluence of the Blanchard and Tatshenshini Rivers. The water was high and one of the rafts "high-sided" on a rock, the coroner says, and flipped sending Pitt and four others into the water. The four other people were quickly pulled from the water but Pitt "was in the water for several minutes before resurfacing," the coroner says. Pitt was then pulled into another raft but could not be resuscitated. Pitt was originally from Utah and had been working as a river guide in Haines since April. The coroner says Pitt had more than 10 years of experience in rafting and guiding, and was wearing full safety gear, including a PFD, wet/dry suit, and appropriate under-clothing, when the incident happened.

Judge approves process to put Yukon Eagle Gold Mine in Yukon up for sale

An Ontario judge has approved a request from the court-appointed receiver to begin the process to sell the gold mine at the centre of a disaster north of Mayo, Yukon. A statement from Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai says selling the Eagle Gold Mine where millions of tonnes of cyanide-soaked ore spilled last year is a chance for the government to get back the "significant" cash it paid to respond to the emergency. Pillai says the judge's ruling is an important first step and any final decision on a buyer will still require approval by the court, based on the receiver's recommendation. The sale process begins with months of advertising and vetting of potential buyers. Court documents show the deadline to pick a successful bid for the mine is Nov. 5. The plan says the sale is expected to close at the end of the year, after it is approved by the court. 'As both the lender to the receiver and the territory's main mining regulator, the Government of Yukon provided input on the terms of this process and will work closely with the receiver and its financial adviser as the process unfolds over the coming months," Pillai said in the statement. He said the government's focus is on protecting the interest of Yukoners. "That includes communicating criteria that reflect important priorities to the Government of Yukon, that can be considered by the receiver in identifying a reputable, experienced and well-resourced operator who is committed to upholding strong economic, social and governance principles," he said. Wildfire in central Yukon prompts evacuation alert for properties around Ethel Lake

The Yukon provincial flag flies on a flagpole in Ottawa, July 6, 2020. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld The Yukon government has issued an evacuation alert for the area around Ethel Lake due to a nearby wildfire that is burning out of control. It says an evacuation order may be issued if the eight-square-kilometre Francis Plateau fire directly threatens people or property. The fire is burning northeast of Ethel Lake Road in an area of central Yukon, east of Stewart Crossing. The territory says the blaze was first reported Saturday and showed 'extreme fire behaviour' on Sunday as it moved downhill toward the lake. It says the current conditions are less severe but the wildfire remains active. The Francis Plateau fire is among about 80 fires actively burning across the territory and is one of nine so-called fires of note.
